Steam Controller $50 and Steam Machines Available for Pre-Order

So it is only for PC which I was originally tracking.

I'll move this to the PC forum.

I do want to pick this up at some point, but I want to make sure that I can use it as a wired Controller by using a USB cable. Sometimes I may not want to deal with batteries.

The Steam Console is also launching is why I posted it here...

In that case we'll update the thread title to reflect both the Controller, and the Steam Machines.

Moving it back!

I'd wait for direct game comarisons for those steam machines, tbh.

I might be interested in the 99 dollar streaming box, but those others are a bit pricey, especially if you want the i7.

These steam machines were suppose to come out a year or two ago. Did the manufacturers bump up the specs to take into account the time gap?

Pricing will be high. Unlike console makers who are willing to take a hit on hardware sometimes to make it back all on software and services, the Steam box makers are in it for profit right off the bat. These gadgets will be $500-600+. Some are going to be desktop PC like and be $1,000 I bet.

The controller seems similar to years back. I remember reading they were going to ditch the double disc pad, but looking at it, it seems no change.

The only decent thing about the Steam Machines seems to be the form factor. Besides that they seem incredibly pointless.

I would rather have a mac mini than a steam machine .......that controller will be mine!

Is this more powerful then the PS4/Xbox One? if not then whats the point.
Who knows. The specs are vague.

The $450 US Alienware model just says this....

The Alienware Steam Machine combines the awesome experience of console gaming with a massive library of over 1000 games, all in full 1080p HD on your TV. You’ll experience powerful and immersive gaming with the high performance NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX GPU 2GB GDDR5

yes it is

Why are you lying for?

For $450 you get a crappy i3, which is pretty much worthless in a gaming PC. A 2GB GTX GPU, at this price point it will be a crap one. and 4GB of DDR 3 Ram. Go and try play Ryse, BF4, AC unity on this rig:laugh::laugh:

It will run them games better then these consoles man.

The specs on that Alienware are way too vague to claim that it'll run today's games better than consoles. We also know that Alienware is wayyyy overpriced, so I would think that for $450, you're going to get crap components.

I'm a firm believer that you can build a cheap pc that will easily out perform next gen consoles....I just question whether or not that Alienware will be that pc.

That crappy i3 and a 2GB 750 ti have been going like-for-like or better with consoles for a while now. There will be a decent performance improvement when DX12 launches.

I'll probably pass. I'd rather play the Panasonic 3DO. At least that was a real console. If i wanted PC gaming, i'd just go all out and buy a monster rig. The Steam Machine will probably flop.

Yeah.
The listings state "i3,i5,or i7 CPU with a Nvidia GTX 2gb GPU" With 2GB of VRAM we can rule out any top end GPU for sure.

Steam trying to make a killing on selling over-priced and underpowered hardware.
Of course.

Unlike MS, Sony, Nintendo who can sell consoles for a loss if they feel like it, only to make back profits on games and services, the Steamboxes don't have that kind of control or wheeling and dealings. The Steambox makers focus for profit is traditional. Sell for higher price than cost. No different than PC makers. Console makers have the flexibility to price at a profit or loss.

No, they haven't. Even with a top tier GPU the i3 falls way under par of what these consoles are doing, and that is with 8GB ram as well. When you put that whole rig together, it is crap, and way over priced.

i3/750 ti

Ryse: 900p/30fps
AC Unity: 900p/30fps
BF4: 900/60fps
Titanfall: 1080p / close to 60fps
GTA V: 1080p/60fps
Evolve: 1080p/30fps
Witcher 3: 1080p/30fps
Alien Isolation: 1080p/60fps

And like I said above, DX12 should help add a bit of punch to the performance as well; maybe allowing for higher settings or increased performance.

Given those stats, looks like that Steambox model is in the ballpark of X1/PS4 performance.

Although given time, despite DX12, I think X1/PS4 games 3-4 years from now will look better than what the i3 model can churn out..... unless DX12 on PC really does wonders as promoted.

That depends if there is actually a 750ti in there.

The Alienware Alpha comes with an 860m, which is okay for some games, but not quite as impressive as it could be. 960m 2GB is a possibility as well, that would be pretty damned close if not better than console specs. The lowest priced Steam Machine is still $50 more expensive than the PS4 though, so theres that to consider... but also worth considering would be that the Alienware Alpha was going on sale for $330-350 every now and again about 6-8 months after release even though it launched for around $450-500 (my memory is foggy, might've been refurbs actually).

As for the second point, I'd agree in regards to XBO/PS4 exclusives, those will improve considerably over time. But multiplatforms will still likely have the same performance differences across the lifetime of the consoles when compared to the same PC hardware. The same was the case during PS3/360 era.

I never understood this.

People thought Sony's boomerang controller looked terrible too. You can't judge a controller by the way it looks. You have to get a controller in your hands before you can make a decent assessment.

Could be awesome. Could be crap. It'll probably lie somewhere in between.

Gee way to take a chance there.
