A 14-year-old Dutch girl who sent a terror threat to American Airlines as a Twitter “joke” has been arrested by police in Rotterdam, it has been reported.

The girl received a torrent of abusive messages on Twitter after her exchange with the airline, in which she pretended to be an al-Qa’ida-member from Afghanistan, was shared thousands of times.

American Airlines responded to her vow to “do something really big” by saying it “takes these threats very seriously” and said the issue would be passed on to the FBI.

The girl, identified only as Sarah, protested that she was just “joking” and that she was from the Netherlands, not Afghanistan. She later suspended her account.

According to local media reports, police in the Dutch city confirmed that she has been arrested in relation to the threat.

The Netherlands-based news service BNO News reported that the 14-year-old was detained “after Rotterdam police’s own investigation”, not at the request of American Airlines or the FBI.

It is not entirely clear what Sarah was hoping to achieve with the message yesterday, but she presumably could not have been expecting the reply she then received.

Just six minutes after it was sent, American Airlines replied to say her “IP address and details” had been taken.

The exchange was then picked up on by the wider public – @AmericanAir has more than 800,000 followers – and was followed by a flurry of messages from Sarah herself expressing her regret.

Among them, she wrote: “omfg I was kidding”… “I’m so sorry I’m scared now”… “I was joking and it was my friend not me, take her IP address not mine”… “and I’m not from Afghanistan”.

Sarah eventually started receiving huge numbers of tweets from strangers, accusing her of everything from being “immature” to outright “racist”.

First the original message, followed by her profile itself @QueenDemitrax_ – largely a fan account dedicated to the singer Demi Lovato – were deleted.

The reply from American Airlines was also deleted, and it had seemed unlikely that an FBI investigation would be launched. A spokesperson for the airline told the New York Daily News: “We took it down basically because it generated a lot of traffic. We took it down so we could better focus on our customers.”

I'm glad she clarified that she isn't actually from Afghanistan. She had me fooled. I thought for sure someone named Ibrahim had hacked a twitter account.

Stupid indeed. But the FBI are still going to waste a lot of time and an immense amount of money on an investigation and then give her an outrageously brutal sentence.

So honestly I don't know who is more stupid.

Definitely the girl. She's scared enough people and companies to warrant an investigation. I'd hit her with a fine that she won't soon forget if I had my way.

She won't face a fine. She's already in jail, and if convicted of a third-degree terrorist threat, she could face up to 10 years in prison. Remember Justin Carter? The gamer who made a "sarcastic threat" in response to someone calling him crazy? He was thrown in jail (where he was also sexually assaulted while he was there, and put him on suicide watch), and hit with a $500,000 bail. He's still fighting his very very serious conviction.

I'm not saying she shouldn't be punished, I'm saying we are dealing with an incredibly over-sensitive piece of sh!t justice system that lacks all common sense so that they may pander to people's sensational fear of everything, and the punishment never ends up fitting the crime.

And lol at the people defending it. It's like a child that steals a candy bar in the grocery store and getting threatened with 100 years in prison and people saying, "well, serves him right for stealing". Morons.

Edit: I guess I'm also a moron for not reading that she is from the Netherlands. Nevertheless, same principle applies. I don't know what their punishments are there though. I know here a third-degree terrorist thread is up to 10 years. Don't know what it is there.

I'd assume they will figure out she's just a girl who made a stupid mistake, and there won't be any overly-harsh penalties.

Agree this is just f***ing dumb. It's a shame the US has turned into such a cowardice police state now. Nothing will happen to her for one how did American Airlines get her IP so damn fast? Also she did not say she was going to blow anything up just said something big so no that is not a threat like it or not. More then likely AA did not even do anything just wanted to scare her.

Wow so the thread more she was held are you f***ing kidding me the US has become nothing but f***ing cowards it's even more of a POS now then I was even thinking.

True. She could have just been planing one of those big flash dance mobs.

Well the US is nothing but a paranoid wannabe police state now anyway. s*** say you hate Obama and want to smack him silly and the FBI will show up at your door. Its really sad and pathetic how s***ty the US has become.

Well, you've got to scare the crap out of people when they do this (I don't mean punish them brutally), or else every dope on the 'net would be sending out false alarms as "jokes," and then the agencies charged with policing this area would be so busy sorting through the fake/joke threats, their ability to detect/trace the real threats would be compromised.

Let's be reasonable here, Dawg. The U.S. isn't close to being as "s***ty" as most countries. Russia just annexed a country. China logs every single move you do online. Japan sells/sold underwear worn by school girls in a vending machine. Pakistan just charged a nine month old with attempted murder, finger printed him and booked him. They eventually dropped the charges.

While the U.S. isn't the perfect country, it's, by far, one of the best countries in the world and there's no other place I'd rather live.

yeah people blow this NSA and such WAYYYY out of proportion. We don't live in nearly as s***ty as a place as people want to make it out.

I don't do that line of thinking my life is better then some others I don't care that does not mean I won't try and make it better. The idea of well some have it worse is used as an excuse by people so they can say well someone has it worse then me so I'm cool with my failures. The US is not getting better. Folks can't get work government is out of control the people are to dumb lazy I've no idea so give two damns about anything if it's not on TV.

That's awful. Reminds me of the time a girl i went to High School with called in a bomb threat on the school.

She'll probably get off easy because she's "just a girl". If it was a male, and especially a male of another race other than white or black they'd be hit hard.

Personally I am surprised I have lasted this long on earth without a twatter account. don't crucify me please.
