The 2000s saw a large proportion of the population, in western countries at least, start to recognise the need for accepting responsibility. It moved beyond the fringes of the wacky hippies.
It's not a climate change thing, but climate is part of it. Also the responsibility of acting in a way, or choosing products that are better for us, better for the environment, better for the workers who produce them, better for the animals who die to make them etc.
I don't mean that everyone acts on that, but the recognition of that responsibility for the world and the people and life in it is the crucial beginning of a movement towards a more enlightened and advanced society, in my opinion.
We are no longer the self-absorbed infant who cares only for his own desires and leaves a mess in his wake. We are now the teenager who knows right from wrong, but has yet to grow up and fully handle the situation.
