AWOL PlayStation exclusive The Last Guardian didn't turn up during Sony's Gamescom press conference this week. Were we expecting it? Perhaps not.
But we had hoped for the Team Ico title to perhaps show up at the Tokyo Game Show in September 2014.
Alas, it doesn't sound like it'll be there, either.
"Will we see it at Tokyo Game Show?" we asked Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida in an interview today.
"I don't think so," was his response. "Sorry."
When will we see it?
"When we are ready. I cannot confirm any timing because we are waiting for it to be in a state where we are happy that this is the game. We have a certain time frame in our mind, and the team is making great progress, but still not to the point that we can say that, here you go."

Yoshida, and other Sony Computer Entertainment executives, are often asked about the status of The Last Guardian, which was announced as a PlayStation 3 exclusive five years ago. We last asked Yoshida about The Last Guardian at E3 in June, where it also failed to turn up.
Sony has since insisted the game is still in development. So, what's taking so long?
"The technical issues on PS3 and the way it was engineered didn't work," Yoshida said, echoing comments he's made before. "It worked to some extent, that's why we had a date in mind."
That last comment is a reference to Sony's 2010 announcement of a late 2011 release date for the game.
"That was a mistake," Yoshida admitted, "but at one time it was looking possible. It has been totally re-engineered. They're still working on it. I've been seeing the progress."
Is The Last Guardian now a PlayStation 4 game? It seems inevitable that it is, but Sony isn't saying. The long wait continues.

So is this a thing now? People are going to ask about TLG at EVERY show that its not at and expect to get a different answer from Sony each time? Sony's been pretty consistent with its message, when we have information or something to show, we will let you know.

The way this title was handled is pretty bad... Announced half a decade ago... yet no solid release date yet.

Well at least they are still working on it, and not just pushing an unfinished game out the door to make a sale. In the mean time, just relax....

You wait. At TGS EG will ask them why it wasn't at the show ;)

I want to work at Team Ico. Talk about Job security.

That"s probably what the development team are doing. I want to work also there where you produce nothing like 8-9 years & still be around.

I will forever lament the games demise :(

When was the last time a game with such a troubled dev cycle been good? Didn't I read somewhere that guys who were working on it left and started their own company so that they can work on something that actually releases?

I don't think you'd have much job-security in the Sony Japan Studios. :-/ They're much smaller than most of their various western counterparts making AAA-games - but they move more amongst the studios.
Japan Studios were a huge building, with Polyphony, Team Ico, Team Siren, and several other smaller team..

Team Ico were like 40 employees, last I heard - two years ago, and 20 developers from Japan Studios working on The Last Guardian.
In comparison Ubisoft Montreal's had 600 developers, and more than 1000 employes total.

My guess is they got behind on the tech on PS3 compared to the top-titles at the time - and had a much harder time to catch up than a big studio.
Heard from two different people - one who works - and one who talk with Sony - that people inside SCEWWS are very satisfied with how it look now tough - so perhaps we might see it at TGS, if that is true. :-)

Please show it @ TGS... it's been too long.

The game is dead. Sony killed it, and yet Sony still talks about it. They just need to admit it. Sony only cares about Killzone and Uncharted. If they really wanted to get development going at full speed and get a release date, they could, but Sony secretly wants the game to die. Thanks, Sony.

Sounds like they have started from scratch again. Maybe we will see another tech demo in a few years.

Poor management. Maybe they are better off using Unreal engine or Unity3D or something, & concentrate on making the game.
