The Xbox Onesie

Techland’s upcoming zombie survival open world game, Dying Light is already confirmed to be running at 1080p and locked 30 frames per second on both the PS4 and Xbox One. So was Dying Light using the latest Xbox One SDK update to achieve this performance boost on Microsoft’s console?
“We were using the latest version just prior to the new release that came out on December 12th. In terms of advantages, the main thing is just how much the ESRAM control has improved,” Lead Game Designer Maciej Binkowski said to GamingBolt.

“The new API allows you to do a lot more with the ESRAM, things devs have always wanted to do but were not easily accessible. This together with better tools (PIX) allowed us to really improve performance and tweak ESRAM usage,” he added.

For those who are unaware, PIX i.e. Performance Investigator for Xbox is a software tool for game developers that helps them analyze and debug their code to improve performance of Direct3D applications. It’s intriguing to see that Microsoft have been making further updates to their SDK which has already helped several AAA games like Destiny and Grand Theft Auto 5 to achieve full 1080p resolution. It seems that with continuous improvements to both consoles, the performance gap is indeed narrowing down

Seems like when some devs were complaining about the esram they just couldn't use it right. As time goes by they'll get better and better. I'm already happy with the games on X1 but any improvements will be a bonus.

It's good to see some evidence that what MS claimed last year is true. I'm one of the few that like Kinect for my kids and Just Dance, resolution thing was never big deal. I just want what MS promised.

No. No no no no. Do not shrink the gap more than you already have. The gamers have spoken.

I wish these consoles were more powerful from the start, and then these such performance boosts would even nicer. At least Microsoft is doing their part as a software giant and squeezing what they can out of the console so early on. As long as Halo 5 is 900p 60fps, I can care less about the console being a graphical powerhouse.

Once developers start programming DirectX 12 with new graphical techniques (not last generation programming as we have seen on a lot of multiplatform titles), I expect XBOX ONE visuals to stand above PlayStation 4. How much depends on how much they make use of these newer techniques.

Even with DirectX 11, Ryse was possible. Forza Horizon 2 showed what could be done, too. What happens next is going to be beautiful!

It doesn't at all who said this man?
The gentleman I responded to who posted above. I think Ryse is a gorgeous game. but that's where the praise stops. I purchased it on sale for like $25 for the digital online Black Friday deal and I could not get past the second part because I could not stand the repetitive gameplay. graphics do not make a game by no means. just like another poster always thinks Killzone shadow fall is one of the best looking games graphically. I disagree with his opinion but I'm not going to reply to him and say no dude its not, because at the end of the day what he thinks looks good is all that matters. but I never play the resolution, I play the actual game. that's how I've always been very good at them especially competitive multiplayer games.

It was better then I thought it would be but still not my cup of tea.
Killzone was trash imo as well and Ryse looked better then KZ but I am not as impressed with either visually as much as BF4 PS4 but that's imo as well.
the best game that I have played this year definitely would be the last of us remastered since that was the first time I've ever played that game being this is my first Sony console that I have owned. But even if that game was 480p my opinion of it would not have changed. I judged it on story and gameplay which was top notch and probably in my top five games I have played of all time and I go back to the original ColecoVision.

Better than Destiny ;)?

ROFL MC is that you?

A simple google search
just to have someone else say it for yaw.

http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/156273-xbox-720-vs-ps4-vs-pc-how-the-hardware-specs-compare

"Ultimately, despite the Xbox One having a slightly faster CPU, it is very unlikely that the CPU will make a big difference to either console’s relative games performance. There is perhaps one key difference between the two consoles, though: Earlier in the year, Microsoft told developers that games will only have access to six of the CPU cores, presumably because two cores are reserved for other tasks. We don’t know if this is still the case, and we also don’t know if the PS4 has a similar restriction in place. Either way, it probably won’t be significant: Relative GPU performance will probably be the big differentiator between the two consoles."

"With that said, irrespective of whether developers can harness the Xbox One’s ESRAM, I don’t think Microsoft’s console will ever compete with the PS4’s larger GPU. I think the PS4 will always have the edge when it comes to raw graphics power, and thus higher output resolution and smoother frame rates. In reality, due to commercial restraints, I expect most cross-platform games will look virtually identical across the two consoles for their entire lifecycle. PS4 exclusives that take full advantage of the console’s superior hardware, though, such as masterpieces produced by Naughty Dog, will probably look significantly better than anything on the Xbox One."

waits for the spin/delete

unlikely, but definitely possible that some of the gap closing, but obvious spin is obvious on your part.

Better than Destiny ;)?
Hmmmm. You got me there. I have over 300 hours in destiny if that says anything. Lol! but two totally different types of games. honestly I don't have an answer as to why I play that game so much. it just turned into a habit with the same routine everyday.

I wouldn't hold my breath, man. They will both improve, and there is no use setting yourself up for disappointment. Even if the X1 version doesn't overshadow the ps4, that doesn't mean it still won't look great. I expect differences will be minimal for most games.

I'll never believe that game would run at 60fps on ps4, even if it was supposedly confirmed before, the hardware is far to underpowered being open world with all those npcs onscreen.
Not to mention it could have run that without any of the advanced rendering turned on too, so any "before" final product statements are moot.

Exactly. Also, Infamous, AC unity, Far Cry 4, GTA 4, etc etc, none of those open world games ran at 60fps on ps4. Hell even rockstar could only manage a few more blades of grass on ps4 GTA 5, so the gap is narrowing. Rockstar is not shy about pushing each system and the Xb1 outperformed ps4 in some areas with GTA 5, minimal yes, but almost all these cases are minimal.

So did MS pay sony to keep their exclusive infamous ss at 30fps? lmao its just ridiculous, they simply can't do it in many cases, the hardware is ancient, we can't expect much this generation.

What you say is true, but I really can't wait for people to stop talking about any gap closing unless we are referring to lady-bits, closing or otherwise.

The simple truth is both machines are close enough, and both get chewed for a pre-breakfast snack by high end PCs no matter how underutilized they are. bragging about it bull-tits useless.

So with the Xbox One only having a <30%+ on paper power disadvantage and removed Kinect requirements, continued improved tools, sdk and upcoming DX12, it is no surprise that the console is showing such dramatic improvements since the initial launch.

That is great news for all gamers, worldwide. The tighter the competition is, the better.

You know everyone in here is talking about software improvements and getting used to Xbox One is why parity is getting closer but no one mentioned the same for PS4, what happens when they start improving the dev tools on PS4? They're going to pull away. The GPU in the PS4 is significantly more powerful.

Like the PS3, the PS4 will always have more on paper performance advantage. While we won't have any 4K games on either of these under powered consoles, we will most likely see a generation of 1080p/30fps and 1080p/60fps games on both. But you will see the PS4 will still have the advantage with things like more grass (as seen in GTA V), or better textures. Unless Sony took away software development tools or made them worse, or stood still on them, there is no way the Xbox One would be able to obtain the same performance considering the Xbox One console has less GPU performance and less RAM performance. Even though the Xbox One has the CPU advantage, the CPU's on both are bottlenecks.

That said, the consoles are so close in power, and under powered, that the difference will be minimal anyway.

I just want 4k streaming and if possible Bluray. (Even though 4k BR is coming 2015)
streaming would be nice but man can you imagine how much bandwidth that would eat up? I would not put it past Verizon which is my internet provider to charge a higher rate for that.

I don't agree with you often, but this I agree on every word you've said here.

They still count and will appear, probably in a batch. I had the problem too after the ddos hack, and it fixed itself finally this morning.
