Titanfall is the blueprint most shooters should follow. A beta review.

My mini impressions from the other thread....
Seems PV shares similar feelings.

Some quick impressions........

+Game is fun(most important factor right? )
+Controls beautifully
+Game-play Feels like a "next-gen" gaming experience.
+Great map layouts
+The maneuverability of your character its the UT/Quake for todays gamers. I can see some pro's pulling off amazing things because of this.(wait till tourneys start and see)
+The art work and scale of the game makes it look "Good" to me.(improved more so with the new update)
+The pace of the game is spot on.
+Online play is smooth as butta.

-Frame rate dips throw game-play off and need tightening up.
-Screen tearing is ugly and unacceptable.
-Sound is kind of a hit and miss...as they sound good but are soft.
-Load times even on the pc version with a SSD installed are a tad bit to long.
-Amount of weapons seems low and that could be a issue for me.(going by leaked data)

A couple side things...
For those who are wondering.....even though the pc version @1080p looks better and moves better(fps wise) then the Xbox One version...the Xbox One version holds its own nicely just looks like a "dirtier version"

Playing it with a normal 360 gamepad on the pc and the Xbox One gamepad on the X1....makes me see and feel the improvements MS has made with the X1 gamepad over the 360's gamepad.

Sounds awesome, MS was smart in securing exclusivity. Hopefully the sequel comes to PS4.

Great write up. You could be a professional reviewer PV. Titanfall is definitely the new blueprint for FPS. It's fitting that the great minds behind the CoD franchise are ushering in the new standard for the genre.

I really like the element of the bots. They're stupid, but that's the whole point. They're only there to keep the game moving. Plus if the other team wants to hole up and camp out you can just kill bots to earn points and win the match. It's good for everyone.

Its just a game and its not even out yet so a little premature on all the waxing poetic and "needs" talk. I enjoy it but personally hope no game has to serve as the blueprint for another generation of shooter. Have we learned nothing from COD. It is nice to see good ideas borrowed by developers but lets hope for some more creativity rather than a bunch more clones. The generation has just begun.

I agree that Titanfall is the evolution of what CoD should have done years ago along the way to innovate if only they cared about that & not milking it every single year. I also agree that a lot of games are going to copy this. (imagine CoD with bot AI in certain game modes that wouldn't count towards killstreaks, but you could kill them with your killstreaks; battlefield maybe having extra tanks/helicopters on the map controlled by AI instead of making the player count even bigger, etc.)

I would like to add for everything that Titanfall does well, it's not without some flaws. It's not the "end all" game. It could improve in a number of areas still. I think some people are over-hyping it just because it's something new/a breath of fresh air.

I know it would, I'm just saying I can see other developers doing it. There's already the rumor that a lot of what they are doing with Halo 5 is cloud based AI for single player so there might be huge wars with tons of AI fighting. Who knows if in that game there might be a similar mode in multiplayer with AI in it even.

You have to consider too that EA is dishing out Battlefield to everybody now. DICE isn't making it anymore until Battlefield 5. That isn't set to release until 2016 at the earliest. DICE is working on Star Wars: Battlefront until it ships in 2015. Criterion & Visceral Games are both either working on Battlefield games or spin-offs of military themed games in the meantime. Who knows what they are going to do. They have free reign over it now. With Titanfall being so popular (it's going to be) I can see where to make the game look & run better they'd sacrifice player counts by putting AI on the map instead. Games always run better multiplayer wise with lower real human player counts as long as the added AI isn't taking up tons of processing.

TF is getting hyped because people are tired of CoD.

IMO, TF simply is not that good. It certainly feels fresh, but feels like a game that'll get old quick. As much as I hate to say it, because Ghost sucks...CoD will remain #1 by years end in terms of both sales and popularity.

TF is getting so much buzz because the press had so much fun with it. And now that the beta has been released to the masses and gamers are having fun with it adding to the excitement before release.

Wait, I thought this was the Metal Gear thread. o_O

What would you rate the beta on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best? How do you think reviews will go for the final game?

I have to imagine we are going to see a pretty good average on Metacritic. Maybe 9?

The BETA I Would give a 7/10. It is only a BETA after all and lacks content and has a few small issues. I think reviews will be mostly 8.5's-9's.

Correct and that's why I said it's a "blueprint."

I'm sure a big part of it is because it's "new". The game really is not all that fantastic, but it certianly is new and fresh.
Just imagine, had there been no CoD, and we had yearly release of TF being milked....and then an unkown game call Call of Duty:Ghost came out....everyone would be creaming themselves over Ghost.

I get it, it's a new game, a new IP in a sea of rehashed shooters year after year....but, it's not groundbreaking, it's better than sliced bread, it's not "goty" material, etc. It's ok. It's fun, but it's not this messiah has come game that many are making it to be.

Its not groundbreaking, really? With its parkour and traversal mechanics not seen in any competitive shooter yet, I think that qualifies as groundbreaking and will sure shake up the shooter market.

I don't doubt franchise fatigue is playing a part in TF's reception. But its not like there haven't been other shooters to come along during CoD's rein. Most of those shooters failed to catch on because they didn't do anything new or were not fun. TF seems to be the exception because it brings something new and fun so the excitement is warranted.

You are not impressed with it and that's cool. You can always go back to CoD & BF because those shooters aren't going anywhere. I'll do the same when I feel like it but when TF drops like airdropped 50 ton mech on 3/11 that's where my shooter time will go and will be happy to see just how much staying power it has with me.

Thanks for telling me why I love Titanfall. Here was me thinking I loved it cause it was fun, but nope, it is just because of COD  You do not like it, fine, but why the need to try and diminish its popularity by attaching a lame assumption to it ?

And everyone thought CoD was the best thing since sliced bread as well at one point....for many years.

Hey, i'm not saying it's not fun, I'm playing it, because....it's fun. I'm disappointed because the way people made it sound, it was going to be the shooter to rule all shooters.

There's a difference between "hey, this game is fun" versus "oh my god, this game is so gawd damn awesome, I came all over myself out of sheer excitment".

And everyone thought CoD was the best thing since sliced bread as well at one point....for many years.

And ? what does that have to do with another game being popular ? means f*** all, mate, f*** all.

There is no "one shooter to rule them all" that is why we have many very successful FPS games at any one time.

I just played it for about 30 minutes at my friends house. Here's my review...

TitanFall is the New Super Mario Bros Wii of the next gen. A more than competent game that I imagined games would be like when I first played the original Halo back in 2001.

It's just a shinier, tighter version of the same multiplayer FPS we've been playing for the past 15 years.

I'm not sold on the idea that this is going to move many XBox One's.

No, there isn't....but that's what people are making it out to be. I mean, seriously...the blueprint that other shooters should follow? lol.

I just noticed we're in the MGS thread

Why not follow it ? you said yourself it is Fun. If it breeds more Fun games then we're better off for it. COD was the blue print for a while and we have seen many games try to be battlefield. It is par for the course. In the end the shooter market will be just as diverse as always.

It's fun for what it is, but it's not "oh my gawd" fantastic. I don't need other shooters trying to mimic TF, the same way I don't want other shooters trying to mimic CoD or BF.

For me, an 8.5. Fun, not awesome.

Absolutely. I'm not saying making it a clone nor did I advocate that. The inclusion of AI should be a norm for shooters going forward for the reasons I presented. Titanfall has, what I consider, the perfect map size of any shooter I've played. It's not too big, which I feel Battlefield maps are and it's not too small which some of the previous CoD maps were. How Titanfall handles challenges is awesome. There's always something to do and something to shoot for. The payout of burn cards and how they're implemented are, by far, the best 'perk' system going. There's a LOT that Titanfall does right and other shooters would do good by emulating many facets of the game.

Yeah, i won't dispute the fact that there's a lot it does right (although I'd prefer no bots and increase to player count).
The map size and structure is pretty cool. I like the healthy mix of indoors and outdoors.

If the rest of Titanfall is in line with how the Beta was, I'd probably give the whole game a 9.0-9.2. It depends on how much depth there is honestly. I love it, I just don't think it's this perfect game that everybody is hyping it up to be, there are some glaring flaws or things I'd personally change.

So you would be happy if they offered an optional no bot playlist then, right?

They will offer a no bot play list dunno how soon though...
Doesn't matter either way unless its a tourney IMO.

Game is good worthy of hype...is it the best FPS game out there?
Hmm BF4 might still hold this title but this market has plenty of room for multiple quality fps games.
