Sony is not looking to leave Microsoft’s Xbox One competition-free in China. The firm is aiming for a December launch for PlayStation 4 in the region, according to a recent report.

Bloomberg is reporting that Sony will start packaging PlayStation 4 consoles intended to be sold in China.

Document filing on the website of the China Pilot Free Trade Zone – which was later confirmed by a Tokyo-based Sony spokesperson – mention that Sony is looking to package and sell 200,000 consoles annually in the region.

Sony has made it clear before that it intends to sell PlayStation 4 in China, but did not outline any specific launch plans.

MCVUK adds that Sony already has established business ventures with Chinese firms for both hardware and software, in China’s free trade zone.

That's cool. I notice Sony is aiming for 200K/yr whereas MS (or some guy affiliated with them) mentioned aiming for 1 million a year. Is the lower Sony number because the Chinese have some kind of antipathy towards Sony/Japan? I seem to remember hearing something along those lines -- that the Chinese are more likely to buy an American product than a Japanese one. I have no idea if that's true or not.

In before the "Why bother...tier 10 countries don't matter....".......

200k PS4s a year in China is probably a realistic target, or ~15-16k a month.

1 million Xboxes a year in China is ridiculous. They launched at 100k, numbers are going down from there.

Tier 2 countries matter more for PS4 because Playstation is a stronger global brand. PS4 will probably outsell Xbox in China 2-1 or more, like the rest of the world outside of US and UK.

Will do similar numbers to XBO (not alot in the grand scheme of things) first console to play backups wins.

Chinese government as a whole is hostile to anybody, be it US or Japan, especially when it comes to economy. It's not about historical antipathy, but purely about super uber protective trade policy. I think it's more like Microsoft was preparing the deal with the Chinese government for a longer time. There were few reports on Sony trying to aim Chinese market unlike the aggressive Microsoft, and the first news of their going to China came in midway through this year.

I see. Thanks for the info. I thought I heard about some particular bias against Japan, but I wasn't sure. So if there's no bias, then I suppose MS and Sony will sell approximately equal amounts.

If true, MS really can't catch a break.
