What movies have you seen recently?

Yeah it was nuts. Really like that "pure cinema" stuff. Man With a Movie Camera is worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 6.8
It was ok. I remember I was kind of disappointed with the movie.
Better action than the Tobey Maguire movies but less comedically charming. The writer should make Peter more witty..less corny while dealing with punks and enemies. The amazing Spider-Man movies have been very heavy on the love interest drama. I'm sure the next will be the same with
Felicia Hardy and Mary Jane Watson.

X-men Days of Future Past 6.2
Big fan of the comic story arc from Uncanny X-men and TAS.. not so much of this movie. People that enjoyed First Class will like it. It's just not X-men to me. There are too many important players missing in all of the movies. Brian Singer's interpretation of X-men is a travesty. It's all watered down and rushed. DOFP is originally a great storyline with many interesting characters but it's used to patch up the horrible X3. This movie gets a boost from 5.2 to 6.2 because of
young Quicksilver's part and the inclusion of Bishop, Sunspot, Warpath and Blink.

Maleficent 8.0
Angelina Jolie. I had a good time watching it. Low expectations and hadn't watched any trailers. I'm sure
it had something to do with being pleasantly surprised. Quite good for a fairytale movie!

I'm going to see Oculus and The Edge of Tomorrow in cinema soon. I hope they're good.

I' Frankenstein

It is almost like this movie is made for children, it tries to give a rather basic and crude lesson in the morality of our actions. Frankenstein is but a child, needing to be taught the difference between right and wrong. To learn that our actions and choices ultimately decide if we are monsters/evil or good. All the time trying to show how easily it is to fall one side of the line or the other.

Best way to describe the movie would be average. The acting is average. Bill Nighy overacts his part-something I am sure we have all come to expect- as Dark Prince Naberius. Aaron Eckhart plays Frankenstein-or Adam, as he is aptly called by the High Queen Leanore- with a somewhat tame performance. Yvonne Strahovki plays her token role with no real conviction or effort. The Story ponders along from one obvious scene to another, filled with tame action sequences and half decent effects, till you reach a rather obvious and anti-climatic ending.

To me, it is one of those movies that you sit down and just let it run its coarse, but you never really feel entertained, it never makes you pay attention to what is going on.
That movie had the sickest intro, introducing you to the way they do battle the very first 5-10 minutes IIRC. Too bad after that it was very mediocre as it was a repeat of the same things over and over action wise. It was a forgettable movie. The cheesy lines at the end was the icing on the mediocrity cake.

Enemy

vaudevile (or however you spell it) continues to be awesome. more abstract than his other work but the talent is consistent. Maelstrom is his only film i have yet to see, should probably get onthat...

Blue Ruin

Really fun thriller. felt a little gratuitous with the violence and lacking in content to mull over, but it is what it is

Kick Ass 2. Not as good as the first but not as bad as reviews made out.

I thought it was terrible. It side-lined the best character for 90% of the movie. I know it is called Kickass, but really it should be called Hitgirl.

Watched The Hangover 3 last night with my wife. Wasn't terrible and wasnt awesome, definitely the weakest in the series. You could tell most of them were just phoning in their parts, hopefully it's the end of the line for the series.

I also watch White House Down and Olympus has Fallen, two almost indistinguishable movies. Neither will win any awards for plot/acting, though the action/destruction in each was pretty decent. I think I give the nod to WHD, some thing about Mr. Butler bugs me...

I hated White House Down. Thought it was terrible-Channing Tatum sucks. Yet, I really enjoyed Olympus Has Fallen.

I'm not a Tatum fan myself either, something bout Butler irks me though, IDK. Plus I'm a bit tired of the Russian/North Korea/Neo Commie threats stories.

I did enjoy OHF though, I loved the AC130 spooky/spectre tearing s*** up. They're both pretty good for a good action movie fix.

OHF just made more sense to me. I thought its way of showing courage for the president was done better. Butler is a better action star. The antagonists also made more sense.

Veronica Mars 7/10

Wish I could rate it higher, I had higher expectations for this movie, even though it was a kickstarter project. The writing wasn't as good as the TV series. It wasn't terrible but it had some pretty cringe worth moments. The story was decent and it was fun to get caught up on all my favorite and most hated characters from the TV series. The ending sets up perfectly for another movie (or even better a new TV series) which I hope happens as I really enjoyed the 3 seasons of TV and this movie was good, just not great.

Elysium - Fantastic

Love some of the effects in this movie. The part with the air exploding bullets tearing apart that robot. The grenade going off and taking his face with it. The part with the chemrail gun shooting through the wall, awesome.

i didn't like Elysium, the script was all over the place. but that shield the villain was using was so freaking cool.

Elysium looked great, but story wise it was kinda lacking.

I agree. The story/writing is not great, but that did not stop it being very entertaining. Same is true of most action movies though, right? You think back to some of the iconic actions movies through the 80's, 90,s all the way to modern-day and they are the same, mostly.

Elysium had some of the best visual design and CGI in... like, ever. One of the best special effects and design in CGI era, Avatar nor Gravity come close to it. Could have used a better script though.

Her

Cracked up like crazy for 2 hours. It's accurate and insightful, hella funny at times, and touching at the same time. Being a tech fan I can't ever be fair in my review, but let's just say, films in general are negative about technology. But, say, The Matrix does not accurately depict our actual relationship with machines these days. Her is one of the very few films that depict technology as it is right now; aspiring to be more human, friendly, and just integral to our everyday lives. The movie is full of these "human" moments set up and mediated by machines, people who snugly embrace it in a way we may or may not be used to (though not all of them). I think it's the first film where human-machine relationship is not a metaphor of some sort, but a dead serious central issue throughout the film.

Grand Budapest Hotel

Absolutely splendid film! Wes Anderson always brings a wonderful visual flair to his films that make things easy to understand and even more of a joy when taking the story. The humor is witty, dry at times, and even a bit silly here. A fun and memorable comedy that's also a bit depressing. I notice he likes to end movies that way most of the time. Leaves a sour taste in a way, but it compliments the sweetness of the humor and cinematography. Great performances, always wonderful art direction, and cameos that are just right. Anybody whose a Wes Anderson fan should definitely give this a watch. Now I want to go on a Wes film bender. Moonrise Kingdom is definitely on my must watch list as I have yet to see it. Something for me to look forward to.

Jackie Brown - 9/10 great movie. Have not seen it since the late 90's and did not remember much of it.

Cop Land - 8/10 good movie and cast.

Mr. Nobody - not sure what to rate this. Was a really interesting film about a mans many different choices through life and he can live/see them all.

Edge of Tomorrow 6/10

it's hard to complain to much because it's exactly as advertised. Tom Cruise dies over and over again. I felt like I was watching a video game.

I hate to admit it, but I did enjoy the novelty of the Exo-Skeleton suit combat (oddly reminiscent of Elysium).

I also thought the ending was way to reminiscent of Oblivion.

I really enjoyed it. Found it be very entertaining. Think I prefer Oblivion though.

Lone Survivor for the second and third time. The movie is just so well done. Love the soundtrack too.
