What song are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Ugh, couldn't stand more than 20 seconds of that. If she were actually beautiful (CL/Hyuna) and talented (95%+ of Kpop artists) it would be one thing but she's neither of those IMO.

Also...

One of my new favorite girl groups. So goddamn beautiful and talented I sometimes wonder if they're space aliens.

I wonder if IdleHands is still around, but if anyone would even show interest in this it should be him.

So I've been basically ignoring all Korean music for more than 10 years. Everything felt like a desperate attempt to grab attention in the cheapest possible way. And then a friend just gave me some f(x), Red Velvet, and Shinee. OH SNAP. OH SH!T. Had zero idea this was happening around me. It's still not a majority, but damn, somebody is actually trying to make good music that happens to be popular as f***.

Still around and still firmly addicted to Kpop and nearly all things Korean. Thing is though, that other than Red Velvet I'm not much of an SM fan. I respect what Shinee and F(X) are doing but I just don't vibe with their music. Red Velvet on the other hand... If not for Mamamoo then RV would probably be my new favorite girl group. I also really like Exo, they along with BigBang got me into the boy groups that aren't too sugary for lack of a better term.

Also, you should check out a LOT of the newer Kpop/HipHop, it's really amazing music, even if you can't understand a single word they say (or can understand about 50 words like I do).

Here are some songs I've had on constant repeat for the last few months.

Boy group edition:

This last one is one of my all-time favorite songs, period. It's got everything including some of the sickest raps I've ever heard and I've been listening to hiphop since the sugar hill gang debuted. RapMon is not only one of the best Korean rappers to date, but one of the best rappers currently performing, period, Korean or otherwise.

I present to you BTS - Dope.

Girl group edition:

This group, 4Minute are pretty much my favorite girl group ATM, but only because 2NE1 hasn't had a come back in a long, looooong time. This song was produced by Skrillex which had me weary at first but in the end the song slays.

EXID is pure sex appeal, it just so happens they have amazing voices and LE is one of the best female rappers to come out of Korea.

Last, but most certainly not least is Mamamoo, my new favorite girl group. They're cute, funny, beautiful and sexy.

And did I mention talented? Yeah, they're that as well.

Let me know if any of this appeals to you, I LOVE this music and look forward to any chance I have to get others to get into it as well so I'll gladly give you a laundry list of the groups/songs I like and perhaps you'll like them as well.

Do you actually understand Korean, or just like the melody?

Kinda curious about this myself. Personally (since I'm Korean) TV shows, movies, and games helped my English a lot, but songs were never really good at that. Too hard to listen to lyrics in the midst of loud instruments. Even now I struggle to understand English lyrics in most songs.

On the recommended songs: I try to enjoy them but I have to admit it's a little difficult. I think I like some of these SM Entertainment teams because of course they are in this idol business but they aren't exactly doing K-Pop. Here when I say K-Pop I'm talking about a very specific genre of music. Straightforward lyrics with zero pretense or conceit, huge influence from contemporary hip-hop in delivering that lyric, etc. I can't point out every single feature but there's a certain type of music one would expect when one hears of K-Pop. That's still not my cup of tea though. Red Velvet is just as far as I can take that genre, and I'm listening to 4 Walls album just like I listen to recent psychedelic synthpops from US. I guess I may actually enjoy K-Pop again at this pace, especially when military service is waiting for me (Yay... not), but yeah.

This is nice. Prefer this than the more racy dancing ones. Pink hair should be a crime though.

This K-pop is supposedly very big worldwide or so I heard. Emma Stone support a fan. She said she like 2NE1

By the way, my mum is a big fan of Korean drama.

Team, please forgive me if I butcher this.

안녕하세요, 팀시

한국어는 아려와요, 그래서 조금 바래 못해요. 그래도 재미 있어서 매일 궁푸해요.

I've only been studying off and on for a year and mostly with audio language lessons (talk to me in Korean.com), listening to a Lot of Kpop, probably too much and watching mostly variety shows as the dramas are typically to corny for my tastes. As a result my text is probably atrocious as I mostly thought of a word and typed th e characters that make the sounds with no regard to irregularities and proper marking particles. Let me know how I did, yeah?

While. I agree that songs can't work as well as other media they are amazing for me as I'm the kind of person that canNOT listen to music without singing along, especially when alone and you have nice, short, catchy phrases that can really help with pronunciation and word retention.

Anyway, two of my newer favorites, seeing as this is a what are you listening to thread after all.

I don't think I love another voice as much as I do Lee Suhyun's.

LOL spellings are a little inaccurate across the board but you got the grammar I guess. So songs do help, I had no idea. Ask me questions if you have some, afaik Korean is such a pain in the ass to learn. I can totally help.

Back to topic...

Sitting through the credits of 10 Cloverfield Lane (awesome film btw), I was eager to know who composed this great soundtrack. Voila, this is Bear McCreary's breakthrough film indeed!
