CORRECTION: Our original story suggested that players' Xbox One consoles may reboot without warning due to cloud updates. This has been corrected to note that it's the host servers that may reboot during multiplayer games. We regret the error.

has announced the Xbox One will require cloud updates on a regular basis, which could lead to the servers rebooting without warning.
That's according to Xbox Live lead program manager John Bruno, who made the revelation during a presentation at GDC Next yesterday (via IGameReponsibly). Bruno explained that while work has been done to try and prevent the Xbox Live Compute servers rebooting in the middle of a game, Microsoft hasn't managed to eliminate the issue entirely.
"Once in a while, rather frequently actually, the host OS will require an update, meaning the physical machine is going to get rebooted whether your code is running or not," he explained. "That’s a problematic thing for a game, and oftentimes it's in the middle of a multiplayer session. We’ve worked very hard to overcome that, but that’s not to say it’s going to be a reality in every case."

That’s a problematic thing for a game.
The team behind Titanfall has previously spoken about how dependent the game will be on the Xbox One's cloud capabilities. The implication here, therefore, is that whenever the servers need to be updated or rebooted, the game will be unavailable. When asked by IGameResponsibly about how Titanfall would navigate these issues, Bruno issued the following response:
"I can’t answer that. I don’t know what the guys over at Titanfall have built into their game. It’s up to the game developer. If they want to rely more on our XBLC service, we’re happy to support that. We do provide a platform for them to persist data, but that’s up to the developer to utilize that."
It's possible, then, that the cloud may have a weekly maintenance period to try and avoid issues, scheduled during a convenient time for most gamers, such as in the early hours of Wednesday morning like many MMOs. We've reached out to Microsoft to see if there are any such plans in the pipeline and ask what happens if an emergency maintenance is needed, and will update the story as soon as we hear back

Meh, MP games drop all the time when the host leaves :p most of us are probably use to it by now. Either way I don't think this is going to be a thing that will be widespread or even affect that many people at once.

Okay, so let me ask this question. And people really seriously need to think about their answer before typing anything..

Live is huge for MS.. does anyone really think MS would let something like this run rampant and continually interrupt peoples gaming sessions and thereby pretty much ruining their online service?

MS will find some way to stop that from happening or look ways around it they're relying on cloud too much. MS won't let it go down shaped.

When I first read this article I tried to source it, and I can't seem to find an original source and citation. Also it doesn't seem to be on any legit news outlets, only the janky blog media. Seems to have a definite slant as well , doesn't even try to be objective. Anyhow all the hallmarks of bad journalism. To be honest I would be more concerned if this came from CBOAT.

But even then, if you parse it, we are talking about one reboot once a week, late at night. Then maybe one or so random reboots a month if there is an emergency patch. Crap, I was playing competitive Left4Dead 2 the other night, and I had host issues ~all night long~ I did get a couple good matches in.

Anyhow, I will take this over no dedicated servers 8 days a week.

I think the most likely occurance is that a server will be sloted for reboot, after a current match ends on it (if there is one) then the players are kicked to lobby and the server reboots while those players need to find a new available server.

I'm just spitballing what I think should be the case.. I don't think they'd let players be kicked mid game all the time,

Clearly the author of the article wants you to think that...

Yeah I was thinking the same, that the maintenance causing reboots would be done in low usage times, and not really a big issue for me.. I doubt it'll be as bad as some would like to think it would be.. I would venture that each of us would only have it happen maybe once in a blue moon if that lol

Yeah,Seems like Microsoft will do it on off peaks hours...when people aren't online as much maybe Australia time?

Yeah,But we won't have those problems now...Because of dedicated servers.Win:)

Yeah... That IGN is running with a story that is written like this, and tries to exaggerate a once a week late night system reboot into some major deal breaking problem, makes me doubt everything that IGN has ever said. They no longer have 'journalism' credentials in my book. Now they they are just a blog, engaging in hyperbole for hits.
I totally agree with you. IGN only have bad things to say about Xbox one. They are totally onboard with sony this gen

After the amount of trolling going on that site...Makes you believe there the ones writing s*** on Microsoft

This already happens on xbox360, I've been dropped from live for an update a few times over the last eight years. It's and inconvenience at the time but it's not a regular occurrence so not that big of a deal really.

Something tells me this won't affect me at all.

Clearly not. Only the haters would entertain such an idea. Xbox Live is cutting edge, always has been always will be.

And with the power of the cloud there's no telling what kind of greatness Microsoft will achieve with the One.

In short NO, when the hosts reboots the VM's on the host can automatically move to another host, when the VM's reboot they can move their traffic to other VM's without even a loss of a single ping. All this is going to go on in the background without a single person knowing that is it happening.

What do people think happens on current gen with dedicated servers? You think they wait for all the games to be over before they do an update? Anybody honestly think the PS4 wont do the same?
