Xbox One is DLNA compatible, supports audio CD playback, Microsoft confirms

They both have their own proprietary music service apps right? either get ad money or get your money to not have ads would be my guess.

It's the only thing that disappoints me about next-gen gaming, so far. About a third of the time, I turn down a game's music and play my own. I've gotten used to being able to do that. Oh well.

Supports DLNA MP3 streaming...why store music in two places?

Cause I have no DLNA device for starters. Well, except my TV and Blu-ray player. Why make things complicated and not support MP3 ? and MS is trying to market the xone as a full on media device :really:

You don't have a PC or a Phone? Windows and Mac both have DLNA capabilities, or through programs if need be, and pretty sure IOS/Android/WP all have DLNA streaming apps. Windows 8 has it built in i'm pretty sure.

I have a phone, but All I need a phone for is making and receiving calls and thus it cost me £5 brand spanking new. Does all I need it too. As for a PC, Yes I do, but....I tried setting up DLNA on it before for my Blu-ray player and it was a nightmare, and most files didn't work any way. Maybe with it being MS it may be better, but original point still stands....Why not just have on board MP3 support ? If MS wants to take over the living room they need to stop making the damn thing reliant on other stuff.

I can see where you are coming from, for me though it isn't really a big deal. I store all my MP3's on my W7 HTPC/Media server, and it streams it to everythign I own, my other PC's, my TV, my 360. I transfer MP3's to my phone so I can listen to music in the car and not have to stream over cellular and rack up data. MP3 players are starting to die out it seems, other than the iPod. I personally don't see the point in having my music on my pc and on my x1 at the same time, when streaming will serve just as well and not take up space in the the HDD. Also we don't know what kind of apps will be on the X1..if there is a Plex app I will be in heaven :D Best media server software I have ever used.

Also, it should be said, that while they stated the X1 will not store MP3's I don't think this pertains to the external HDD support that will arrive eventually. So if you cannot get DLNA working on windows (if you have 7 or above it shouldn't be a PITA, lots here could probably help) then you could probably easily just store them on a extHDD and play them on the X1 from there. I wouldn't compare this to them saying it wont playback from media devices mostly because I think the reason for that is the format of the media player is probably not NTFS (or even Fat32).

Obviously they as a company, like Sony, are trying to expand their music service subscriptions, but for me personally DLNA is a huge feature for media. If Sony doesn't eventually bring it then that sucks for PS4 users (I know they said they are looking into bringing it, but still it may never materialize)

ya, and that's going backwards not forward. What about people that have a tv tuner card setup in a pc that streams live tv around the house. People that use xbox 360 as media extender like myself.

any answer to this out there?

Maybe we will be able to hack the xb1 like the first xbox and load xbmc lol.

"Arrive eventually" is not exactly an answer though. That could be a week after launch, or 10 years down the road. As for Sony... I really do not see why they wouldn't have it. Pretty much every Sony device is DLNA, but then I do not see why neither do not have native MP3 support. I know they want to draw attention to their music services, but pissing people off by omitting things we have gotten used too could do more harm than good. What ever happened to the days of choice, and services living and dying by their quality of service ?

Speaking of DLNA..... I downloaded Serviio, and set it up to work with my Blu-ray player, and all seems to be working fine. Not sure what I used before, but it must have been junk.

The problem with MS and Sony promoting music streaming services is that those things effect your online bandwidth. What if you want to play online? Not even online, since they are talking about cloud compute.

I have a ton of music on my 360. I guess it's time to try DLNA. Does it work on 360?

I wouldn't expect it to take too long..as that 500GB will probably fill up fast with people that buy lots of games. Personally I see resident MP3 playback to be a thing of the past now with technology to the point where it is just as efficient to stream it. 8 years ago streaming media was a bitch (from what I remember lol) with anything other than MCE. Storing MP3's made sense, but the tech has advanced significantly since then. Choice is good, I just think it seems a bit redundant is all.

Never used Serviio, the built in streaming capabilities of Windows always served me well enough (or I used to play videos on my 360 via extHDD until windows streaming was better. W8 has native PlayTo so it's nice. Maybe if there is enough of a movement they will patch in MP3 storage and media device playback in the future.

For ps4, dlna and cd playback is a no go but yoshida said it can be patched in an update later.

why are both consoles omitting something as basic as mp3 playback i don't know. so you can't play custom mp3's in games on x1 like you could do on 360.
you could if streaming music via DLNA...which is how i play my custom soundtracks anyway. Looks like Xbox music is going to work as well which is nice if you have a sub already. (as i do).

music streaming is going to be a minute effect on bandwith. Shouldn't be a concern unless you just have a slow internet anyway.

Yes DLNA works on your 360...quite easy to setup. Windows media player supports it. Or a number of other programs.

Can you snap mode and use Pandora?
Tom Warren confirmed he was playing a youtube video while playing forza so it certainly seems like you could.

Good thing about having virtual OS'...what the game is being coded for on the game OS has the limits of resources available...as do the apps....they should never conflict in theory that could hamper either performance.

Not being able to play MP3's of an external HDD is idiotic.
To be fair they didn't address extHDD's, only media devices like iPod's, iPhones, Zune's, & Windows Phones; as well as that the system itself doesn't allow MP3 storage. This could mean that the system may be able to read MP3's from the extHDD as the media devices i believe don't use a standard windows PC file formatting. Won't hold my breath, but it may still be possible..I'll give it a try once the support is added in.

You're such a MS fanpuppy :p

I'll probably invite only ridicule by saying but I wonder if my zune will still work.

Hey man, no shame in owning a Zune! I wish I didn't get rid of mine...but it looks like it won't be supported. :(

That's an unattractive look for her.

Laugh all you want, this thing has lasted 5 years with zero problems. Took at least a 3 foot drop to asphalt and the only damage is a tiny mark on the corner. Call me old fashioned (or a technological r****d) but I like having an mp3 player and that's all. These app/phone/lamegaming/sendyourpictureoffoodtoyourfaythbuck/contraptions are just a bit too much for me. don't know what to do with half of it. Plus I can't seem to ever be comfortable with touchscreens.

Sorta off topic'd here but this thread aint exactly bustling with activity.

I know that feeling bro. This is why my phone is cheap and basic. All that smart phone crap would just be wasted on me.

Need we mock me further?

So I have culturally dead product, so I know a grand total of 3 people in my life that have had one.
This thing has RADIO
