Xbox Scorpio and PS4 Pro to be followed by NEW Microsoft and Sony yearly upgrades?

Yearly? No thanks but these should do for another 3 years

I wouldn't mind upgrades every 2-3 years as long as the visual improvements are worth it.

Not happening. Maybe we'll have a 3-4 year cycle or whatever but that's it. People aren't going to buy new hardware every year. It's not a phone, something you actually need that you can trick people into buying every year.

I feel like that meme fits about sugar with the guy all serious saying do you want ants? Because that's how you get ants. Only do you want the video game industry to crash again? Because that's how you crash the industry.

From Stardock, again.

Yearly updates make no sense for this sector. The upgrades would be insignificant for starters. Plus they would need a business method change that didn't cost the consumer 3-400 every year. Most iphone upgrades are free or massively knocked down thanks to cellphone contracts.

These console refreshes are fin every. 3-4 years. Anything less is pointless and likely to alienate the vast majority.

I'd just do what I do for phones, not get one every gen. Only when I feel I need it.

I think that may be a super old quote from Stardock... Surely every game that supports HDR isn't made with their engine?

I just don't see it. The X1 and PS4 both missed the mark with performance (and everyone here knew it and predicted it). Now though, if they can hit something close to 4k (upscaling) with a solid fps (games like Horizon Zero Dawn look amazing) I think that is a good plateau for awhile.

People are just buying 4k TVs now and the consoles are hitting that support that at a good time. Maybe we'll see mid-gen upgrades every 3 years or so instead of the longer cycles, but yearly? Don't see it.

While I love my Pro and will be buying Scorpio day 1, I'm not paying for that kind of upgrade every year.

I honestly thought the Pro was a year early. Keep it around Four years, and that should provide a worthy enough tech upgrade. I can't imagine any bump would be great enough in a year that would cause people to upgrade.

Yearly is dumb. That said with both consoles being closer to PC it should be easier to get them out in a more regular cycle than waiting 6-7 years or more in between.

The whole point of console is to have a specific collection of hardware guaranteed so that games can be optimized specifically for that. With two and three year game dev cycles and annual hardware refreshes, that would never happen - essentially every game would have to be developed as a "launch" title. Will. not. happen.

Not really. You would have the base model which all games are playable on the n get scaled up for other iterations of hardware. That is how games are. done on PC.That base model could stay for 4+ years.

However, the more consoles added the worse things like optimization gets. Which is also evident on PC.

But yeah. I do agree, yearly is not a good idea.

Yearly wouldn't really benefit consoles, as others have said you wouldn't see a big enough improvement to make it worth it. Two years probably isn't long enough either, you'll get a little bit better of a jump but costs for things like upgraded memory let alone the improved GPU/CPU will probably still be fairly high. Three years makes the most sense as the earliest to do it, four years will get you a little more bang for your buck but anything longer than that and you are back into a traditional console generation release schedule.

You raise a good point.

Dev's should start holding back parts of their games, and sell those little bits to us as downloads, instead of releasing a finished game.

Could you imagine?!

That's why they should only have two active cycles. Base and premium. All consoles should phase out eventually. It's part of being a console. As long as your old games can still be played, I'm good. Otherwise, it would be as you describe.

This way is the best of both worlds, where you can get 7-8 years out of your purchase if you want, but you also don't get left too far behind on the tech side if you want to get the new hotness...

I'm not sure how much of Wardells comments have proved to be accurate. Grain of salt.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a revision in another 3-4 years, but 1-2 doesn't seem feasible.

E xactly. Which is why 3-4 years is perfect. After 6-8 years on the market the X1 can go, new premium model bought in, Scorpio still has a good life left and should be at a great enry pricepoint for new consumers. Lt is all good.

How about naming? Do you keep going PS5, PS5 Pro, PS6, PS Pro, etc? We'll be to PS9 in no time!

We've given you all the 1s you need to install the game, if you can figure out where to put 0s. Luckily, 0s are now available in packs of 1024 for $0.99, and with the Convenience pack at a mere $29.99, the 0s will be put in the right places. Keep an eye out, because some of the 0s are ultra-rare, and you'll be able to trade them in for fabulous prizes if you find someone who wants a shiny ultra-rare zero and has fabulous prizes to give you.

Even most PC gamers don't upgrade yearly. Hardcore PC gamers probably overhaul their system every 3 years. I think 3 to 4 years is the sweet spot depending on how technology is evolving.

OP is promoting clickbait! This is why we have fake news!
