Not really. You would have the base model which all games are playable on the n get scaled up for other iterations of hardware. That is how games are. done on PC.That base model could stay for 4+ years. The whole point of console is to have a specific collection of hardware guaranteed so that games can be optimized specifically for that. With two and three year game dev cycles and annual hardware refreshes, that would never happen - essentially every game would have to be developed as a "launch" title. Will. not. happen.
You raise a good point. The whole point of console is to have a specific collection of hardware guaranteed so that games can be optimized specifically for that. However, the more consoles added the worse things like optimization gets. Which is also evident on PC.
E xactly. Which is why 3-4 years is perfect. After 6-8 years on the market the X1 can go, new premium model bought in, Scorpio still has a good life left and should be at a great enry pricepoint for new consumers. Lt is all good. That's why they should only have two active cycles. Base and premium. All consoles should phase out eventually. It's part of being a console. As long as your old games can still be played, I'm good. Otherwise, it would be as you describe.
This way is the best of both worlds, where you can get 7-8 years out of your purchase if you want, but you also don't get left too far behind on the tech side if you want to get the new hotness...
You raise a good point.
Dev's should start holding back parts of their games, and sell those little bits to us as downloads, instead of releasing a finished game.
Could you imagine?!
