An interesting note: to make the stereo chat adapter work with old headphones (Turtle Beach, etc.) you have to plug in a USB cable to your controller & update the firmware through the console. Hmm...

(via GameInformer.com)
In order to use the new stereo headset or the standalone adapter, you need to:

  • Remove the batteries from your controller(s)
  • Plug the adapter in
  • Plug a USB cable first into the console and then into the controller
  • Install the update (be sure not to remove the cable)
  • Put the batteries back in
  • And then turn on the controller with the Xbox button

Damn I should have waited, I bought an expensive DAC to get the sound from XB1. Oh well, guess I'll just start enjoying real high quality sound I paid for.

I do not understand ? Why would you need a DAC ? or was your head set an old style with Phono and the X1 don't support Phono ? but even, surely you could have routed the sound through the TV..Hmmm. Explain:)

Oh. I'm living in dorm and connected my XB1 to a monitor. I found out that DAC in this monitor sucks ass. I'm not even an audiophile and this simply sucks so much. And yes my phono is a 3.5mm one, and I didn't know there are gaming headsets that allow optical input up until yesterday. I guess I don't regret though, since the new DAC and headphone combined offers excellent sound.

Ahhh, OK.

You would think somebody who used a monitor for 80% of his xbox gaming would have thought of that

So with the Astro A 40s would I need to ply anything into my console for sound or would I be able to just use the adapter in the controller?

With the A40s I imagine you're still going to have to plug the base into the console with the optical cable ... otherwise there's no source for the sound. As far as I know the adapter is for chat functionality only, not full game audio.

I have A40s as well so would like to hear if I'm wrong about that, but that's how I expect it will work.

from what I gathered, you're correct. Any old head set will be chat only.

The way I read it, "Some gaming headsets use a single 3.5-mm audio cable for both chat and gaming, like the Xbox One Stereo Headset. These 3.5-mm gaming headsets plug directly into the Stereo Headset Adapter", you need only one cord for the Official Xbox One Stereo Headset - a single cord from the controller to the headset and you get chat and game audio.

I was wondering if there are any other models out there that allow this setup. Right now my SPDIF goes to my sub and I don't want to mess with changing where audio input is coming from if I go between the TV and Headset. I just really like the the look of the Astro headsets and they seem to get high ratings.

If anybody cares, the Polk 4 shots my buddy got them & they have launch issues. When he talks, you can barely hear him. Judging from Polk's forums, they are addressing the issue. They are saying they've already debugged the issue & it was firmware related. The big news about this is it's going to be at least two weeks before it gets updated. So that's two weeks without your friends being able to hear you. Although I hear from him that the actual headphone build, comfort, & audio quality is top notch, the chat volume is simply really low coming through to other people right now.

From what I've read, most all of the "nice" headsets are having some weird issues with voice on these things. Bummer.

its more than just low volume... Its extremely muffled and very unclear... I had them as well and basically used them to do a "test" voice over on a game clip via upload... I'm not confident that this will be addressed in a firmware update (nor do I understand how they plan to update a set of passive stereo headphones with a new firmware? Didn't know this was even possible...)..

now if this is an issue with the headset adapters.. That would make a little more sense...

in the end I took them back because of this... By comparison, the adapter and separate headset I bought afterwards works perfectly (mic is very clear and easy to understand).... So imho it has to do with the headset or its design... Really disappointed too as I liked all the other aspects of the polks...

I didn't think I would have this much trouble tracking down the stereo headset adapter, but it's sold out everywhere around me and it looks to be getting marked up $5 some places... douchebags on amazon are trying to sell it for $75.

I found *one* in about a 30-40 mile radius - checked several targets/wal--marts and finally found one by calling a GS that happened to have a canceled pre-ordered one (and their last) available...

My guess is they sent majority of the first batch with all of the headsets as pack-ins. Along with a small number available for individual sale.

I paid $30 for it (thought they were supposed to be $25) - but that's fine...
