I'm quite literally getting sick to my stomach.
What happened to playing games and being happy to play them?
What happened to spending time on message boards and sharing unique experiences regardless of what platform you are playing on?
What happened to the gaming community?
This isn't what I signed up for.
I can remember playing the N64 and PS1 back in the day and never having to defend or read through mountains of fanboy rage to discuss games.
What has turned my hobby into something that makes me despise most of my peers who also game? I'll tell you what. A single word:
ENTITLEMENT.
Gamers today think that just because they swore allegiance to a particular platform, that platform should get every game/content/royalty in existence.
I don't understand it. The console manufacturers are in it for the money. ALL of them. Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo it doesn't matter. They want to make money and they want to lure you away from each other. The next Tomb Raider going 'exclusive' is just the latest example.
People are crying because in order to play the game you need to own a console that the crybabies don't want to own. So this underlying sense of entitlement is driving militant fanboys to take their frustration to the internet in hopes of reversing exclusivity.
XB1 Destiny fans did the same thing when it was found out that the PS4 was getting (timed) exclusive content. These are deals made by console makers with publishers so that the particular platform that benefits will appear more alluring. It creates a need to buy the platform to experience these unique features/games. These practices DRIVE the industry forward and console sales forward.
This generation of crybabies have forgot what drives sales and makes consoles competitive. A competitive console environment means great things for gamers. Grabbing up exclusives or exclusive features ensures that we don't live in a single console environment. Who wants a console space inhabited just by Sony, or Microsoft, or Nintendo?? Apparently the crybabies do....
It really is unbelievable. It has turned my hobby into something I enjoy privately, but not collectively or with the larger gaming community. People are all too quick to take to task these companies (Microsoft or Sony) because of some imagined slight and blast that company online for the world to hear.
Being a mod here on Union has really driven this point home. I love this site, and the fact that the majority of the posters here seem to think rationally it really makes Union stand out from the larger mass of fanboy inspired hate that permeates the internet fold.
Outside of these forums it really is an unpleasant place, and the crybaby mentality has made me leery of addressing my opinion on other forums.
I guess I should get use to it. As this generation goes on there will no doubt be alot more tears shed. My only advice to those who are upset about the TR exclusivity is that you should buy both consoles. Same goes for Destiny on the PS4. If you don't want to then don't complain. Exclusivity is one of the fundamental factors that drive console sales and that isn't going to change.
This generation of crybabies is well underway.
Anyway, discuss.
How do you honestly feel about gaming community these days? Do you find it enjoyable to discuss games online or are you largely disgusted by the current state of gaming and gaming media as a whole?
For me Union really is the only forum I frequent these days. How about you?

They're (Microsoft) already preparing the brand for sale with the closing of divisions and laying off thousands of XBOX employees, imo. These are the things you do before a sale to make the offer look more attractive to buyers, you cut operating costs.
The lack of investment in exclusives is apparently part of the plan as well. I look at it as a good thing though.
