Let me say first that for many years I loathed Bill Maher because he can come across as just as annoying as Bill O'Reilly in that each of them are such fanboyz for their parties that they refuse to give an inch even when they know they are wrong.
But this past year I have really started to enjoy his show. He's toned down a bit from the past I recall and seems to be a little more fair-minded in his criticisms of democrats. If anything, he has brought some really good guests to his show over the past 5-10 episodes.
Bernie was great and if I leaned liberal I'd take him any day over The Witch. The republican guest actually dominated the panel discussion and got Maher into a hole where he just had say the guy was lying yet Maher admitted he hadn't done all his homework. The guy on the left was a bust but that gal from Elle did a good job (or was I just entranced by her looks?)
You should hit the Overtime shows Maher puts out on YouTube which continue the panel discussions. It's a great add-on to a good show.
But like you mentioned, the most interesting part of the show was the Dilbert cartoonist explaining how Trump is working voters over. I found it absolutely fascinating and hadn't even really considered it before even though it is completely obvious. There was a prior episode a couple weeks prior that had Micheal Moore on it that covered a little bit of what Trump is doing also. It really gives you a new perspective on the situation and also is pretty scary to see how people are becoming duped in the process. They called Reagan "The Great Communicator"...could Trump be "The Great Persuader"?
