New KOTOR (Knights Of The Old Republic) Reboot?

Being built from the ground up.. well let's be honest they would have to. No way they could just release the original with upgraded graphics.

But does that mean they are going to re record all the voice work? Won't sound great by today's standards and they can only touch up so much.

Edit- yes they are but not all the original VAs will be back.
They are also changing some of the story...

Changing the story? Blasphemy. Still worth a buy if done well, though, since it's a top ten game of all time for me.

I think it's kind of cool they are going the Demon's Souls route.

This is another game that I never played and I am looking forward to experiencing it like how I did with Demon's Souls remake.

You are in for a treat man,the game is incredible...it will be worth the wait ;)

Developer Aspyr is creating a remake of the original Knights of the Old Republic, and the developer showed the first teaser during the PlayStation Showcase today.

The game will be a PS5 console exclusive at launch. Regarding a PC version, nothing has been indicated for the moment.
"The teams at Aspyr and Sony Interactive Entertainment have teamed up with Lucasfilm Games to bring you a remake of this cult Star Wars adventure.
We are recreating one of the greatest RPGs of all time for a new generation with technology, modern features and graphics, while staying true to the story and the characters we cherish "

The studio brought together "veterans who worked on great RPGs (...) as well as some of the original Knights of the Old Republic development team."

Rebuilding from the ground up like Demon's Souls.

where does it say anything about rebuilding it like Demon Souls?

It was in the video after the showcase when Sony sat down with the developer.

Found an article about it here

The Star Wars universe contains many memorable stories. Even though a lot of people associate the franchise with the Skywalker Saga, a number of games have added even more interesting narratives to the galaxy far, far away. Set over 4,000 years before the episodic movies, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one game that has presented a compelling story for fans to discover. Recently, Sony announced that this fan-favorite Star Wars RPG was getting a remake, and the developers revealed that the game was being built from “the ground up” for PS5.

Speaking about the remake of Knights of the Old Republic, the lead producer for the game, Ryan Treadwell, described the company’s goal to build a version of the game for new and returning fans to play on next-gen consoles. In order to achieve this vision, the developers are utilizing “the latest tech” to improve the visuals. According to the producer, the aim of the project is to present the worlds of the game in high fidelity while maintaining the essence of the original art.

Treadwell went on to note the importance of the game's narrative in the production process, emphasizing that the developers want to “honor” that pivotal part of the gameplay experience. As the creators at Aspyr Media attempt to balance classic elements alongside new innovations, the company has brought onboard veterans from the RPG genre including some from the original Knights of the Old Republic. Treadwell also revealed that the process to remake the game was part of a collaboration with Lucasfilm Games and Sony.

I will withhold judgement until I have the finished product. So many gamers said TLOU 2 was terrible before I played it and I found it to be a masterpiece.

Yup. For all the controversy TLOU 2 had, it is the most acclaimed game of all time for a reason collecting 300 Game of the Year awards.

Personally enjoyed the whole game even though it made me sick playing the game at some points that I won't discuss because of spoilers.

It’s clear that the story was written to create as much controversy as possible, but you’re right the actual game was great. I loved the setting and the combat.

So it’s possible the KOTOR gameplay could be great! I’m surprised people have any hope for the story though, this Maggs person seems like a lunatic and she is the head writer

If the leaks didn't happen it wouldn't have been that controversial because the leaks were saying things that ended up not being true.

this remake will be nothing at all like demon souls. People love to throw around the Souls comparison but they are rarely accurate. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to see this coming, but “rebuilt from the ground up to be like demon souls” is just marketing bulls***.

Yea i think that's just a confusing statement they put out. They probably meant they are building from the group up like they did for demon souls but not matching that style of game. They are two fundamentally different games.

A closer parallel would probably be FF7R assuming they are changing the combat in a similar way, i.e. real-time turn based to maybe 1 to 1 action inputs.

Well, to be fair they just said built from the ground up and I added "like Demon Souls" as in the way they made a new engine, not like it will play like Demon's Souls or have anything to do with it other than them both being rebuilt in terms of visuals. From the article, it sounds like they want to retain some of the narrative as well, so that's a good sign for fans of old. Sorry for the confusion.

The problem is that the gameplay in Kotor wasn't the bellcow, it was the story that carried it. Hell, Kotor 2 killed the original on terms of gameplay even when you factor in how buggy it was, but the story in one and how it unfolded was essentially the pinnacle of BioWare's narrative prowess. I was hoping more that they would treat it like ffvii, where they might turn a turn based game (pure 3e mechanics) into something more contemporary.

I would have preferred FF7 to just be prettier and with voice acting.

I think Resident Evil 2 is probably the better example of what you are talking about where they purely modernized it.

Had no idea this was announced. Bummed it will be PS5 first. Star Wars KOTOR 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games of all time beat each multiple times.

Hell I’m still waiting on FF7 to hit XBox when is that thing ever coming?

Great game, still have my copy for the OG Xbox. Hopefully it doesn't get butchered.
