Its the framing it as if they need to buy Activision to compete with Sony or as if they have been forced to do this.
And why is he trying to paint Microsoft as some kind of victim?
He isn’t implying they had no other option. It’s just their selected response. MS doesn’t have to buy Activision, but they did need to do something.
Basically saying if we can't buy Activision, we can't compete but what have they been doing the past 2 decades then? lol
And they did something. They bought many other companies. There was no real need to anything more major previous to buying Activision.
There first party was in good shape before that and would be if it didn't go through
MS is coming off as they can only compete if they can get the Activision deal is done, which is false. Their current first party studios with the Bethesda acquisition is more than enough to do so.
The fact they are downplaying their own studios / exclusives and Gamepass speaks for itself.
And Sony can’t compete without COD according to Sony, which is false.
MS # of current first party studios > Sony's = Fact.
Just manage them well and get a cycle of games/ IPs going like Sony and you're golden.
Was there a truce I missed? There was no agreement to stop acquiring studios. If you have more studios you aren’t obligated to let competition catch up, even if that was a legit metric.
But isn’t it all about cod? No one is talking about wow, cs go, diablo or Overwatch. It’s all cod all the time.

I agree with ya on about management. But it seems they’re doing ok with their new purchased studios according to dev heads/leads (ie ninja theory, doublefine, playground, etc) saying they’re being hands off. Yes 343 probably needed new people for a while as they started a new with infinite, and now they have the guy who took lead and corrected the mcc collection.
Obviously there isn't but MS is not a victim here and they can still compete without Activision is my point.

They wanted to be acquired, so if MS falls through I’m not sure what their next move will be. Maybe sell off individual assets?

They have already said they will take it to court themselves to allow MS to buy them.
For Sony it is all about COD. That isn't the case for MS hence them having no intention of removing it from platforms. For MS the big draw is Activisions mobile games.
It is pretty clear mobile gamers aren't that interested in these console games. So, for Game Pass to really crack that market they need mobile dev studios and mobile game IPs. Candy Crush is one of the biggest mobile IPs.
Which is what they are doing.
You have to remember that MS isn't just in the traditional console space like Sony is.
Can't blame Phil for Xbox's and MS's past decisions.
Yes, 2022 has been poor for Xbox exclusive games, but the drought that has plagued the platform for like 12 years is almost at an end.
Also, Xbox Game Studios has released about the same number of games this gen as Sony's studios. Something to keep in mind.

In 2014 he took over Xbox with a f***ed console, no financial support for growth, fought for years to get funding. Since then, he has got MS to pay billions, quadraupled Xbox Dev studios, gave us Game Pass, Xcloud, Backwards compatibility, made gaming more accessible. Increased revenue. Better hardware, etc.
