A newly released game industry report by market researcher Newzoo shows that while the PC and console market grew 2.6 percent in 2023, overall playtime decreased as gamers spent more and more time in a smaller list of old games like Fortnite and League of Legends.

On April 2, Newzoo released its second annual game industry report, including a ton of data and information on what people were playing and spending money on during 2023. According to Newzoo's data, the PC and console game market grew and reached $93.5 billion in revenue in 2023. That might seem like good news, but drilling down into the data, it becomes clear that it's only good news for a small number of publishers and developers

"The rest of the lists included titles that won’t surprise you, like Grand Theft Auto V, Counter-Strike 2, Roblox, Minecraft, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Fall Guys, Valorant, and Call of Duty. Across Xbox and Playstation consoles, only one dedicated single-player game cracked the top ten: Starfield."

Lol.

Not BG3 the 2023 GOTY. Not the massively hyped up Playstation games. The only single player game was the one the media & over active Playstation fangirls tried to kill. LMAO!!.

Not surprised free to play and live service games are on top for most hours played.

FPS games specifically have been in a massive slump. For FPS fans, there's really no options other than older games (or COD, which is just a yearly version of the same old same old). Rainbow Six Siege is making a comeback and that's 8+ years old?

While 2023 was a great year for many games, FPS games have lacked.

To be fair Ubisoft REALLY supports Siege. New operators, maps, game modes, balances etc consistently. I bought Siege at launch and I've gotten my money's worth out of it.

Meanwhile in Nintendo land , 5 out of the top 10 arguably 6 are single player games.

Also, this list is why I don't fault Playstation and Microsoft for trying to create the next big GAAS or FTP hit from one of their IPs. Gamers online are telling you they want more single player games with no microtransactions, while the data shows that most players are spending their time and more importantly their money on these free to play or GAAS type games. They'd be fools to not try to capitalize on the trend.

I fault them and think they are idiots for ruining franchises out of pure greed.

The problem isn't GAAS or microtransactions, the problem is games aren't good. One of the biggest problems is companies want to make this massive GAAS, but don't have the resources to put out any content.
Too often, "content" drops are just cosmetic drops that are paid. People want new maps and new guns. The last couple Battlefield games are perfect examples. Games launch at full price with scaled back content, then the "GAAS" doesn't really add nearly as much.

They need to start with a good, fun game first, and that's where things fail. Build a good game and people will come. They release sub-par games with limited content added and expect it just to print money.

They are the problem, though. They are the reason for these bad games. COD, Battlefield, Halo, Titanfall ( in nonexistant now), Gears of War, etc. All once good games that have nose dived quality wise since trying to go GaaS. GaaS literally ruins games.

Is there really a good GaaS game. Fortnite seems the same now as it did at launch. Destiny has been a s*** shw since day 1.

I play older games far more than the more recent ones. The majority of them aren't appealing at all.

I'm playing a lot more off beat games (at least for me). Stuff like Power Wash Simulator, House Flipper, Gas Station Simulator, Snowrunner, Expeditions, MLB 24, etc.

I have my eye on Construction Simulator right now.

5 years a go I wouldn't even looked twice at any of this stuff.

I still think Crackdown 3 is fun for single player. It's simple, but fun.

The multiplayer is a dumpster fire.

I enjoyed it and will go back to that. Never played the multiplayer as it was dead by the time I tried and couldn't find a game.

Has there been a hit multiplayer game released in the last 6 years? I know Helldivers 2 is doing well but it's not fortnite and it's relatively new.

Top 10 on Steam right now being played - majority is live service games / MP games. Only ones that are new here is basically Helldivers 2, CS2, COD.

So these Sony Bros saying “exclusives matter most” are just lying to themselves.
In a way one can mean third party exclusives or exclusive marketing/deals matter most to them, they want to be casuals source of gaming. It’s definitely not their first party games. They already have first party games on multiple platforms day one, including yet to be released ones, which have been pushed back. I forget where I was going with this, took a break and ate too much pizza 😝

Quality Exclusives plus access to these live service games is what matters to most console gamers and the sales numbers speak for themselves. The market share of the big 3 console companies paint the whole picture of where consumers interests lie.

To an extent, but there’s also an issue of too many games, nostalgia and safety that most people will just go with what they know.

I have said issue, I’ll hop on Netflix or another streaming service and be like “I’m finally gonna watch this…oh s***, this is out, nah, I’m gonna watch this, but not now cos I’m eating and my partner wants to watch it too….hmmm, what’s on prime, f***! YouTube it is, nah, I’ll just go a play geometry wars evolved instead.”

But that’s also why you gotta read many reviews for games that are sequels or remakes, cos most reviewers base it nostalgia than an actual review

Too many games and fillers yes but not as much quality Mp games as before in the past. Like I said before above, only 3 new games are in top 3 and they are all sequels or improvements to older IPs.

New Narrative and cinematic games are never in the top most played because most are one and done once the content is completed unlike multiplayer and live service games with additional content each quarter.

There were many quality mp games, but most were GAAS, and like most new ips, people try them for a good moment and bounce of to something else.

So not engaging enough as a GaaS to keep people coming back? 🧐
