With the new firmware supporting these digital wireless 7.1 channel headphones and headsets just wanted to hear anyone's feedback that has used one of these. I was particularly looking at the Sony Gold headset and have heard it is amazing, but wanted to get some feedback from anyone that has one or something like it.

I'm particularly wondering how good the sound quality and 7.1 channel effect is.

Thanks guys...

For only $30 more, I would go with these.

Guess I would be interested in trying them out just to see how good they are. I have a nice pair of Audio Technicas I use when gaming on the PC and they do a great job being stereo only.

I'm using the very first official Sony virtual 7.1 surround sound headsets and they are friggin' amazing.

It even made my performance better in Ghosts because i can hear people's footsteps so much better now. You can easily visualize where they are by just listening.

Personally I don't see any reason to upgrade since i have these. Unless the 7.1 Virtual surround sound is just that much better in these gold headsets?

To each is his own but I would never spend a $100 plus for a fake surround headset and yes there is a difference a big difference.

But those are simulated too. Even the ones that aren't simulated are not really true surround sound, as the the drivers are too close to your ear to really give you true spacial awareness. I find that the good simulated ones work pretty darn well though.

The only true 7.1 headsets I know of are the Razor Tiamats, but those are wired.

No they aren't simulated they have DD decoders built in.

No different than the Plyr 1's I linked. They both have simulated DD 7.1. with built in decoders, hell they are even made by the same company (now). The Astro's are nice no doubt, but not worth $300. This is what PC gamer says in their review about A50's:

Surround Sound and WirelessWhile the headphones just use single 40mm drivers in each earcup, they offer simulated 7.1-channel surround sound with Dolby Digital 7.1 audio processing, which you can turn on and off from the mixamp. The audio processing doesn't produce a very strong surround sound experience, but it helps round out the audio, and offers fuller imaging. This is still a stereo headset, and no Dolby feature can give you the real sense that someone is sneaking up behind you in a shooter.

Like I said though, the Tiamats are the closest you will get to true SS, but who wants wired.

I meant True DD 5.1 which they are... the 7.1 part is simulated and not needed in a headset.

I see nothing but the headset saying its digital 5.1 via optical...even the dolby digital logo which couldn't be used if they were just stereo simulated to PL.

No doubt that the sound is different....but if someone is ok with the sound, than whatever.

It's not always about needing the absolute best, if it was, where does it end? I can assure you that if you told me what your TV was, I'd be able to point out that there is another TV better.

I paid less than 100 for my sony headset. I see no reason to spend more when I'm not really a audiophile.

I might point out peoples obviousness biases making making opinions but I try not to argue peoples opinions. To each is his own

I know one person who bought the Sony Gold ones, he took them back. Said they were uncomfortable and didnt sound very good.

Initial impressions on NeoGAF is mixed in regards to sound - and pretty awesome in regards to comfort, price and compability.
I have no idea what they are comparing it with tough, but wireless at 100$, and 8 hour battery, and virtual 7.1 it's definately something worth concidering as a entry package tough. :)

Starts coming a few reviews on youtube aswell now:

Any word from any owners? Blue didn't you pick up a pair?

I did.

My impressions so far:

I've tried Battlefield 4, Injustice, and Zen Pinball on PS4, and some music on PS3 (thank you mp3 support).

First and foremost, VSS really sucks. I'm not sure if that's exclusive to this headset, as this is my first experience with the feature, It didn't offer any spatial awareness in BF; the only thing it added was a headache. Everything sounds pushed too far--highs are way too high, bordering on distortion.

To be sure it wasn't BF exclusive, I tried it with ZP and Injustice as well, and it had the same effect. Nothing clean about it.

Turning it off made a real difference. Much cleaner, more depth. The bass boost seemed necessary on the games I tried, though it muffled the sound of music too much on PS3, and I preferred it off.

Do they sound better than my 555s? No. My 555s are open, and there is this expansiveness to the sound I wasn't able to replicate on the Golds. Even music, which I feel seems a bit flat on the 555s compared to games and movies, was still superior than the Golds.

However, not by so much I plan on returning the Golds. I thought they sounded just fine while playing games with VSS off, and bass boost on. Plus, they're wireless, which is what I need, since I can only enjoy my 555s late in the evening, since I have to move a chair close to my receiver. I need something wireless for the couch.

Overall, I think they're pretty good. I haven't tried to chat yet.

Thanks you just saved me $100 as I was going to pick these up specifically for the 7.1 VSS.

Get the PLYR 1's, they have great SS and are only $30 more. The only downside is the voice chat level is a bit low unless you use a chat cable.

Audiotechnica, JBL, Polk, Technics, Pioneer SE series, Ultrasone.

Good pricing in regards to Sony and MS. Overall however, you get what you pay for. The quality from the companies above will last longer as well.
