Virtual reality is still in its early days, but it’s amazing how capable it is of making your bank account look a lot less impressive.

HTC revealed today that is has sold more than 15,000 HTC Vive VR kits in the first 10 minutes after it went on sale for preorder. That’s not bad for an unproven technology that costs $800 and requires a $1,000 PC. This comes as companies like Facebook, Google, and Samsung are all moving into this sector. Investment bank Goldman Sachs predicts VR could grow into a $110 billion business by 2020 along with the similar augmented reality tech that mixes digital images with the real world — and Vive is one of the consumer products that could drive those revenues.

Vive is a PC peripheral (from HTC and its partners at Valve) that you wear over your eyes and ears. This enables you to feel like you are inside of a game or a simulated experience. And unlike other VR devices, Vive has a number of extra sensors that can track your movement around a room. This amps up the feeling that you are present in another place, and it is the main selling point of the Vive compared to its competition.

It be my choice for PC VR if I was in the market.

Holy s*** batman. I'm amazed by that.

Now, lets see what happens when 2.0 is announced in 12 months. Or 1.0S?

Not to tinkle on anyone's barbeque, but this is the first one on the market, right? So wouldn't you expect it to be gobbled up by the ultra-enthusiasts? And the first 10 minutes doesn't tell us much about how well it'll do over the long haul.

Do we have a gauge for how well these things have to do, in order to be deemed successful? Probably not, I'm guessing. I suppose it depends on the company and the hardware.

OR VR has been out in beta forms a few years. $800 a pop 15,000 in 10 minutes is impressive. I think its the Valve faithful buying em up.

Pfft. Wait until Apple come out with one, at just double the price. People will line up around the corner for that s***.

Seems like Oculus and Microsoft are in a similar pickle, with their respective VR/AR. Both were the early technology revolutionaries waiting to tweak their product to perfection. Meanwhile competition has been developing at a serious rate. Oculus is now caught in the middle between the affordable PlayStation VR and the fine-tuned Vive. Similarly, the Hololens now has Magic Leap and Meta 2 looming, even of the brains aren't wearable. I think that I will be better off seeing where all this is going first.

I'm really divided between the Vive and the Rift. Can't decide which one I want.
Me too. This is why I just can't justify being able early adopter.

Facebook Net Worth $190 Billion >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Valve Net Worth $1.5 Billion
that's like saying MS Gaming division>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Sony's gaming division because MS has much more money yet we know Sony is far more successful in sales and game ratings.

Vive if you have a dedicated room for VR, where you can easily walk around with that contraption and cords dangling from your head and have a floor free of crap to stumble over. Rift if you don't.

I guess the main thing that has me thinking about Vive is the support for it from Steam - to me that means we're going to see a lot of Steam titles support it.

Are there any reviews on these devices yet? Does one have better performance, or resolution, or less latency than the other?

Does that mean they wont support occulus too?

Is it hard to integrate them? I don't know if the technology behind the two is that different, so I've no idea how hard it is to do both.

This is the one I want, later though... like xmas gift to myself later.
