Microsoft confirms it shipped 3.9 million systems worldwide in 2013, but only sold 3 million to consumers.

Microsoft announced today as part of its latest financial report that it sold to retailers (shipped) 3.9 million Xbox One consoles worldwide during the quarter ended December 31. It sounds like a big number, but it doesn't tell the whole story.

Microsoft previously announced that it sold to consumers 3 million systems worldwide by that same end-date, meaning there were actually 900,000 Xbox One consoles either left on store shelves or in transport during the year. This despite Microsoft saying it was selling every console it could make.

So supply has already caught up to demand, eh?

That was quick. Kind of corresponds to how I've seen some xbox ones readily available whenever I went out to shop.

Regardless of the stock situation, the Xbox One and PS4 had extremely successful launches.

But it'll be interesting to see what the January, February, March, and April numbers are and if Titanfall gives the One a big boost. Or if the PS4 pulls away once it launches in Japan and are able to get their supply to catch up with the demand.

End of the year shipments. Nothing new here. Stock shipped in final week/few days of the year and could not be sold in time to be recorded for the last years sales. This is normal.

It'll be interesting to see the NPD for this month and see how big of a drop off they had, there has been plenty of stock on store shelves in most places for a while now.

X1 = more stock available as per endless images
PS4 = no stock available as per endless images

Sony fan thinking:
X1 isn't selling, while PS4 is selling out.

Reality:
NPD Nov = PS4 > X1 with both systems selling out everywhere. Both systems basically 1 in, 1 out.
NPD Dec = X1 > PS4, despite endless skids of dust collecting X1s

Also, X1 has sold more software with fewer global consoles sold. Goes to show which system people are more likely to buy games on.

X1 sold more than PS4 in Dec NPD... (even though it costs $100 more).

And 360 doubled PS3's sales too.

Price isn't everything.

Microsoft as a whole had a kick a## recent quarter. 24.52 billion with a B in revenue. With strong gains in xbox division and surprisingly, even Windows phone. I guess they are not as lousy as alot of people here would make one believe. Can't wait to see Sony 's numbers as a whole since there so much smarter then Microsoft as a company and all. Lol

I really don't get what MS is trying to accomplish by stuffing the channels so much, they could have easily added a few more countries to their launch and sold out every console they produced.

Well, yeah MS focused on NA, obviously there would be more stock in stores.

Xbox One sold more software in NA but what is their number for global software sales? The PS4's at 9.7 million last I heard. If MS had more than that, pretty sure there would have been an obligatory tweet coming out of Major Nelson...

9.7 million? Cant tell if serious....

All that units in stock, the X1 should outsell the PS4 this January. If not MS is in big trouble. Also X1 should win February and March. I read a rumor from GAF that Sony might not be able to re-stock retailers until mid March.

lol at intellivison's spin.

This whole story is a huge spin on what should be good news.

Following the publication of this story, Microsoft corporate PR representative David Dennis issued a statement to GameSpot that aims to clear up the discrepancy between Xbox One units shipped vs. sold during the quarter.
"We sold through nearly every unit we could in the holiday period and pulled forward as many units as we could from Q3. However, only some of those shipments were sold into the channel in the final period of the quarter and so there was not time to sell the units through to customers," Dennis said. "These units are now being sold through to customers."

"went unsold" is misleading language IMO.
The X1 wasn't languishing, it sold well and had ample stock.

I don't understand how they can use January stock numbers to justify calling MS out for saying they were sold out in December. Is gamespot in the click bait business now?
