With the unfortunate passing of Tom Clancy today I thought about one of my most anticipated next-gen titles, Tom Clancy's The Division. With the exception of Killer Instinct for the Xbox One, Tom Clancy’s The Division is the game I’m most looking forward to next generation. I’m not much of an RPG guy, but I am a shooter fan. When I watched The Division reveal at E3 my jaw dropped. It was the perfect, and seamless, joining of RPG elements and a shooter.
I couldn’t help but smile during the E3 reveal when the team finished the battle at the police station, snooped around the inside and attempted to extract but couldn’t because another team showed up and engaged them. It was like watching a Bourne movie where there chaos followed by a moment of relaxation then absolute chaos again to keep you at the edge of your seat. I guess it reminded me a lot of Gears of War. Gears has these quiet moments followed by absolute chaos. It’s great and always surprises you. With The Division there will be even more surprise moments because the enemies are other players. I want that chaos. I want those momentary downtimes. I want those surprises.
On The Division’s website there's a video I hadn’t seen before. It’s a companion video showing a teammate playing as a drone. Since you're a drone, you can see most of the area that you're fighting in. You can command the team, mark enemies and even call in missile strikes, all from a tablet. Also, if the firefight is too much to handle for your team, call in another player and use the tablet or smartphone to pinpoint the spawn location to make sure they arrive out of harms way. While I may have some reservations about the next generation of consoles arriving too early, it's features like the Companion mode in The Division that makes me feel comfortable about the next-gen arrival. Now, a release date please!
I’m not sure how I missed the companion video since it’s over a month old but it’s a great watch and it upped my anticipation for The Division. I didn’t think it was possible, but Killer Instinct was eclipsed as my most wanted next gen title. My most anticipated next-gen game now belongs to, Tom Clancy’s The Division.
Here’s the companion video followed by the E3 announcement trailer and some screens.
