Amazon considers $40 Prime price hike

Amazon said it is thinking about raising the price of Prime membership by as much as $40, hoping it can strike the right balance between managing rising costs and scaring away customers.

An extra $40 would represent a 51% price hike and could push customers away. But the math might still makes sense for Prime members, depending on how often they take advantage of the free two-day shipping option.

Thoughts? I'm not a member of Prime, so it doesn't effect me. I know, however, that there are million of owners out there. How you feel you about this?

I'm on Prime through work. It really works out well if you can get a few people together and you guys all just split the cost. They used to do this at TeamXbox every year. I shop a ton on Amazon, by almost everything, and need prime especially with the $35 minimum for free shipping the have now.

I've had Prime for maybe 4 years but I would cancel it at that price unless I really started using the movie service more. Haven't bought much through Amazon lately so it's barely worth what they charge now.

Been a Prime member since day 1, but I rarely use the video service since I have Netflix. I already got hit this year with them now adding in tax for my state so this would be another blow towards my desire to keep Amazon my go-to retailer for just about everything but clothes and groceries. The big selling point for me was the free 2-day shpping but many other retailers offer that now also. I would likely drop Prime just to let Amazon know my feelings if they hiked it up.

I wish they'd offer different packages. Like say one package where you just get the 2-day free shipping. Another where you get that and the movies/shows, etc. I would just get the 2-day shipping package.

I don't pay $80 for Prime, I sure as sh*t am not going to pay $120. I might pay $40. So they should be thinking about lowering the price, not increasing it.
