Sony, Amazon and other retailers will begin to offer PlayStation digital download games. Let's hope the competition for digital purchases pushes some great deals for gamers.

Sony now lets you buy digital PlayStation games from Amazon and other retailers

Sony has decided its PlayStation Network (PSN) Store isn't going to be the only place you can purchase digital PlayStation games. Utilizing a model similar to Valve's PC game marketplace Steam, the company will allow online retailers to launch their own storefronts for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and Playstation Vita titles (although PS4 titles aren't listed right now). As spotted by Kotaku, Amazon launched its US PlayStation Network store today and is offering $5 PSN credit on digital orders -- credit which can be redeemed in its buy two get one free promotion starting at noon ET today. Digital PlayStation 4 games will launch alongside physical titles, making an all-digital game library a reality, but a Sony monopoly over pricing may have affected their overall success in the past. With Amazon's PlayStation Store, and other potential partnerships, Sony will let gamers shop around for the best game deals, just like they did with boxed copies.

Microsoft did this on the 360 for a while for certain games. Hopefully MS follows suit because they halted it I believe.

Are we purchasing a code? Hopefully it is and it will it allow the gifting of games.

Yes, and hopefully the price of digital versions of the games come down. Other than the convenience of not leaving the house, not much incentive for me to buy digital. Considering I typically have to buy multiple versions of the same game, I have always justified it by the fact that I will get some of that money back w/ trade-ins.

I'll still buy physical when I can, unless we're talking $10+ cheaper than the best hard copy I can find.
This is great though for arcade/indie games.

Cool, I guess. But if I’m online looking to purchase a digital title I would just go to the PSN Store. But if this means discounts/sales as competition often does then this is great. No digital downloads for me outside Arcade titles until the prices get in line with their disc counterparts.

have no reason to buy digital unless it's the only available media or if it was cheaper than physical.

This sounds interesting, but are your games protected? I know I can buy a Steam game, delete it, and redownload it at any time. And the same with PSN and XBL games. But it feels weird going through someone like Amazon for digital PS4 games. It may also mean you have to keep track of which retailer you bought a certain game from if you wish to redownload. I feel iffy about this.

This could be massive, & more stores selling, means higher chance of getting the games cheaper, & in a shorter time, unless Sony imposed restriction.

Its works just like steam (at least the amazon one does). You get the code from Amazon, redeem on the PS3/PS4 and from that point one its tied to your PS account.

For example i bought the Last of Us season pass yesterday thru the Amazon PlayStation network store since it said i would get a $5 credit. I received the code from Amazon. I redeemed it in the PS3. Downloaded it. Now its on my PS account download list and i can redownload it if i want or need to later. I redownloaded to make sure even.

So you won't need to keep a list of the vendors you purchased it from unless you wanted too.
