Any RC'ers here?

I got a Team Associated RC10 when I was 8 years old. Me and my dad built it and eventually upgraded it a little bit, but then I f***ed with the trimpots on the electronic speed regulator thingy and it didn't work anymore and it's been collecting dust for 20 years. Also the servo sucked it would never go fully centered after letting off the turning.

Someday I will rebuild it just to right a wrong and get nostalgic.

My Baja is 1/5 scale ..its gasoline powered not nitro that was and is still popular with small models. I got my Baja 1/5 for $700 ,the small one is 1/14 scale goes about 30mph outta the box and can be had new for about 150. The Thunder Tiger is 1/8 scale is about $500 and is about 30 mph on 4 cell and about 45 to 50 mph and uncontrollable on 6 cell lipo. Brushless lipo is the way to go,id stay with Traxxas,losi,AE-thunder tiger/ HPI brands ..look up RC nightmare online or Squrrelrod..Also if your going Quadcopter for beginners there is only one choice DJI Phantom.

My Baja was clocked on Radar at 78 mph with a 2 speed about 3 weeks ago. Probably got there in about 3 sec', also 26.5 pounds of Murder if your standing to close.

Zubalon Yeah the traxxas stuff looks nice, but is out of the price range that my wife is comfortable paying for a beginner model for my kids, she wants to get them dept. store brand ones lol I am pushing hard for hobby grade but have to compromise on price.

The ones we are looking at are 1/10th scale, and come RTR.

The $150-ish price range is the highest I can get my wife to agree on lol, they are both upgradeable with better engines/esc's later on to go lipo if need be.

I like the buggy's layout better tried and true ,Horizon Hobby is a good brand ,Losi basically. Let me go on launch see what I can find for 150.

K, thanks. I like that those RTR's I posted come with Tx's, Spektrum is a brand I am used to as I have a DX6i for my air, my son has a DX5e that came with our Phoenix Sim. They were also some of the cheaper 1/10 scales I could find. There are cheaper 1/18th versions of a couple of the ECX trucks, but they come with an offbrand Tx

My older brother was really into rocketry way back in the day. He even bought me one when I was like 8.

BTW,do they still make gas-powered RC cars?

A couple years ago I got into RC with hobby grade stuff. I primarily fly aircraft and have a couple planes, and my sons are wanting to get into surface stuff.

Anyone else here into RC'ing?

A long time ago, I was a builder/writer at Great Planes / Tower Hobbies. I must have built, flown and wrote the manuals for well over 100 aircraft.

This one:

and these were among my last few:

And yeah, I built the show models in the photos and vids :)

I randomly buy cheapish RC helicopters and other flying things (those weird "Flapper" ones for instance that look like a birdman.. manbird).. but they break really fast.

yeah, they can be fun, but once screw up and it's "damn, need another one..."

Pretty much. Last one I bought was a bit more expensive than the usual ~$50 ones I buy.. was maybe $100... had great fun with it the afternoon I bought it.. then my friend came over.

Handed him the controller.. he takes off.. goes straight into a wall.. broken. lol.. sort of de-motivated me and I haven't bought any new ones in a while.

My house is great for the things though.. I have vaulted ceilings as well as other architecture you can fly around/land on.

Last RC I had was a Radio Shack Golden Arrow.

Oh hell yeah! I had a golden arrow too, my first RC car. Loved that thing. I drove it down a storm drain at my Grandmothers house, yelled out "OH Sh**!", first an only time I've sworn in front of her, they fished it out and it still ran like a champ.
Then I got a Clod Buster, that thing was a beast!

The pics not mine, the one I had was blue.
Sadly I have neither now :(

Very nice, pretty sure a couple of the older guys in the local flying club have a couple of those models in their hanger.
Since I don't have extra cash for insurance and club membership I just fly my park flyers. I have a PZ micro Corsair that I am in the process of modding, and my son has the micro Cub. I loved my T-34 while it lasted, but one day we took it up and there was a bit of turbulence, I think a wire inside hit my kill switch (which as a noob was mounted inside..and not on the outside) and it spiraled into the dirt. rebuilt the engine, and the esc, but need to still rebuild and recover the wings, and get a new cowl, and probably a new front gear strut. Other than that the plane was in good, fuselage was unscratched.

I have a little Halo ODST heli that I fly around the house..it's great :D takes a lot of abuse actually.

I've always wanted to get into a RC cars but it was the price that put me off. Anyways what is a good all in one package in the $150 range?

The ones I have found that are decent all-in-ones in that range is the ECX line that Horizon Hobby carries, the ones that I am looking at for my kids. Reviews seem to be positive and the youtube vids I have seen so far make them look like good lil beginner RC's with ample ability to be bashers.

http://www.horizonhobby.com/products/boost-1-10-2wd-rtr-buggy-white-red-ECX03004 (also comes in black/green)

They all say that come with a battery, wall charger, and a Spektrum DX2E transmitter.

They have 1/18th versions that are AIO of the Ruckus and Torment, they come with smaller mAh batteries and an offbrand transmitter instead of the Spektrum ones.

Zubalon said he was going to look around for others in that price range as well, I generally only look at what Horizon Hobby carries as that is what both of my local hobby shops order from, and they usually sell me them at US prices + $5 so its cheaper than importing for me, or from some of the bigger online hobby shops like Great Hobbies.

LOL yeah I can see that, it is fun though to do once or twice.

Yeah, these type of hobbies can really get up there...

I had to drop R/C stuff for awhile just because plastic models takes SO MUCH out of it right now......For a serious plastic (static) modeler like me, it's not just the model itself, and I'm not talking about the el cheapo stuff you buy at Walmart either, I'm talking about monsters like this:

TRP3705__01343.1373482365.1280.1280.jpg

Trumpeter's 1/200 scale, USS Missouri...$340 a pop.....And then you have to get the aftermarket stuff, paint etc...And then the price usually get upward just slightly south of $1000! OUCH!!!!!!!

Holy cow, I've done cheapo plastic modelling but nothing like that. I have a few larger scale basla wood models sitting on my bench that one day I would like to build and modify to be RC planes, but just don't have the time for it right now...hobbies get less and less time allocated to them with kids around lol

Tell me about it!

Your spare hobby time just get squeezed to the nadir when you got a 2 year old and a 1 month old in the house!

I still don't know what I was thinking when I preorder that Missouri...1580 plastic parts + 280 or so metal Photo Etch = you taking forever to build the thing! I'm looking at a 2 year job at this rate! Again, I'm thinking about R/Cing it. It's certainly big enough to do it at 53 inches long...But that will chew up another $700 at the least (for the best parts etc) and right now, that's more money than I have.....That's my Christmas and Birthday gift already and I still haven't bought the aftermarket stuff (Gotta look at White Ensign Models metal gun barrels and propellers and ladders and railings and radars and....HOOO BOYYYYY! another $200 down the drain! Did I tell you this hobby is serious money?!?!?!?) ! And when it gets finished...Gotta find a place to put it.....

Sigh, me being a WW II freak! It's the history of that ship that took me down...And now I'm already thinking about this:

The 1/200 scale Arizona from the same company.......Just so I can have a "beginning" and an "end! Sigh...It never ends does it?:crazy::crazy:

I use to have a gas powered RC car a few years ago my dad use to fly planes.
And when I was a kid I had a few tamyia RC cars super champ I still have the hornet
The frog was awesome. My friend had the big four wheel drive truck it was metal thats worth big bucks on eBayeBay

I'm a bit of a history buff as well, but I tend to lean more towards the warbirds than the naval ships. No it never ends :p one thing I have learned from wood model building is that it is never perfect..ever lol. I think I have too many hobbies lol between video games, model/RC, trying to learn golf it gets hard as my free time is always short. I have 4 kids. an 8 y/o, 6 y/o, 4 y/o and a 1 1/2 y/o so you can imagine how busy my house is lol..For me to really get time with my hobbies I need to do them with my wife or kids..which is why my wife is learning golf with me, and my boys are into videogames and RC'ing lol. I got no problem playing Disney Infinity ;) One of the biggest reasons my wife is letting me get next gen now is that I promised I would hand my 360 down to my oldest boys.

RC'ing that bad boy would be really cool..if you ever get there take pictures and make a thread. I'd love to follow along.

Ok here is a good one !!comes with everything Brushless/2.4 ghz remote/Nimh battery/ wall charger . It is basically a Mini 8ight losi critically acclaimed mini 1/14 scale "uses a lot of 1/10 scale parts". Its under there name brand kinda like Lexus/Toyota,it uses all the same parts and really easy to work on. DO NOT try and drive this with 3cell lipo until you are ready because its stupid fast. Any land RC that breaks 40mph is really just to fast ....lol until your ready :)

Yeah, I've looked at the Kalahari.. pretty nice little car. Definitely something to think about. I had thought though that it was primarily for dirt/sand use and not really meant for snow or grass or other wetter terrain? Will try and find some review on it, final decision is always up to the wife :p but that doesn't mean I can't put it on my birthday wish list lol.

40 MPH seems very fast to me, but then again I have no surface experience yet. There's a couple of man made dirt tracks around here out by the mountain bike parks, seems like it would be a good place to take my sons to just have a good time without having to worry about cars on our road lol.

The vid was fun to watch, thanks for that :)

^ This thing was the greatest ripoff EVER. It had a s***ty range,it BARELY floated over water (you had to place it real carefully or it'd tip over) and the battery pack was sold separately. I think this thing killed any interest I might have had on RC modelling.

Tyco/New Bright/Fast Track/Air Hogs etc are all department store RC and are very seldom every hobby grade. I wouldn't let that ruin RC, as hobby grade stuff is much much better than that crap. I've used that stuff and also have been highly disappointed, but an air hogs heli or plane cannot compare to a hobby grade micro flyer or heli. Hobby grade RC is expensive though in comparison so I think that discourages a lot of people as well.

They could probably do those well now surpised they have not tried with brushless motors and lithium batteries.

Found this vid of the Kalahari, shows it running on the stock NiMH and then on 2S lipo...the lipo gives it a good amount of zip in comparison, bet the 3s would make it fly.
