Are JRPGs irrelevant?

Lot of judgment of others' tastes in this thread. I prefer to think, different strokes. I don't see the big deal if some people like JRPGs. Some people like genres I don't like, too -- so what? Does that mean those genres are irrelevant trash that needs to go away? No, of course not. Some people like them. Who am I to deprive them of that pleasure and say their taste is wrong? It's right for them. Different strokes.

JRPG's are not irrelevant, though the last console generation didn't do the genre any favors. IMO, there was a serious drop in quality and quantity of JRPGs for the PS3 and 360. The ps3 and 360 had their masterpieces/gems but I can count them on my hand. The previous generation(PS2) had enough to keep you entertained for months at a time. Let's not even talk about the PS1 generation or SNES generation. You can still find great JRPGs from those gens that still hold up.
More or less I shift the blame on the developers. When you have developers taking 3-5 years to develop an single game, and the game is average at best, you are going to see a decline. It also doesn't help when some of the best JRPGs in modern times have not been released on consoles but handhelds.

Because WRPG's don't have a soul and DS/DS do and anyone who actually played it could tell you its very Zelda like in much of the game.
uuuhhhh....I've played all these games and the dark souls is nothing like Zelda.... can't even imagine somebody comparing them.

I'll be honest....I love Zelda but I don't think of that game when I think JRPG.

Its very much like Zelda and I put hundreds of hours into Demons Souls and Dark Souls 360/pc.
When describing Them I can't think of a better description then a DARK/ADULT online enabled Zelda.

Not sure what you mean here but I could cares less what people like...... but I do know that back in the PS2 days JRPG where all the rage and the only way you could play a western RPG was on PC. That has changed in a big way.... now western RPGS are all the rage and JRPG are a niche market. Jrpg has basically no effect on who wins the console war..... this wasn't the case back in the day.It would be a bigger deal to see mass effect or Skyrim be a console exclusive than final fantasy. I am happy with this as I like western RPGS.

Yeah Zeldas adventure/action.

No! Bad Kassen! No!

RPGs rely heavily on story. If you skip over that, you'll be lost, and you might as well not bother playing. Shooters are made for people like that.
I've seen dozens of RPGs that don't rely on story at all, some stories being the most mediocre of all games. And no, you will not get lost if you don't pay attention to the story, unless you are talking about the PS1 era. Also, shooters are no less about stories. Call of Duty and Battlefield have their stories, and much money is put into creating great action adventure stories for such games.

That's... an interesting statement. There are some excellent WRPGs out there, but I'm struggling to think of one that has a "soul". There are certainly Western games that have it. The Last of Us springs to mind, because it was such a perfect blend of gameplay and storytelling. But WRPGs? I don't know if I can recall one. Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins were both great, but I never once felt any spiritual connection to them at any point. I think it has something to do with whether the people making the game consider what they're building to be a product or a piece of art. And the latter seems much more common with Japanese developers.

If Zelda were dark, gritty, and had crappy controls. Yes, I love those games as much as you do, but holy crap the controls aren't that hot. That's probably where half of the difficulty comes from. XD

Yeah....i hardly even think of Zelda as a RPG....... to me Zelda is its own greatness.

It's also a Japanese action-RPG. :p

For the most part, I say yes. They've certainly haven't made the mark the way Final Fantasy 7 or Kingdom Hearts did. Can't be denied that the popularity of Japanese gaming has certainly dwindled.

Then by all means, argue away. Just understand that your opinion is your opinion.

That sounds like something one would say if they were losing an argument. It sounds like you're trying to say "Argue if you want, but you're wrong." :p

I don't know what it is with some of you guys and your desperate need to validate your own opinions.

Sounds good.

Unfortunately I believe they may be, at least here in the states. To me, they are far from irrelevant though. I'd play Lost Odyssey over Skyrim any day. If I could get a LO2 but that would mean never getting a new Elder Scrolls game, I'd do it in a hear beat.

JRPG from what I can remember is my first type of RPG that I remember, either on SNES or PS1, PS2, etc. I'd play it over a Western styled RPG any day.

In fact Bravely Default will probably get me to buy a 3DS. Hoping Wii U gets some good stuff as well soon, because looking back at the Wii it looks like it had plenty of options.

I can tell you that Final Fantasy Mystic Quest on the SNES was my first RPG, period. That's what got me hooked on the genre.

Cannot wait for Bravely Default. It's supposedly a better Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy.

Morrowind series,KOTOR, Icewind dale, Badurs Gate, mass effect.......I also loved ff2 and 7. I liked some JRPG back in the day but it was there because of old tech and we need to move on.
"Nothing so needs reforming as other people's habits." Mark Twain. No one is required to play JRPGs. There will be JRPGs, as long there are enough gamers to sell them to. To each tribe it's own poison, live and let live and time to move on.;)

While I much more enjoy games like Fallout 3/NV and Mass Effect I have to admit that no RPG has ever captured that sense of adventure for me that FFX did.

Now, before you go on about it not being a good FF title or that there are many, many better JRPGs please keep in mind that FFX was my very first RPG ever. I rented it because I had an expiring free rental coupon and a new PS3. Little did I know I'd stay up all night playing it and then go buy my own copy the next day. I much have put about 300 hours into that game. When it's all said and done there are RPGs I enjoy more but none have really made me feel the way FFX did and the way memories of that game make me feel today.

I cannot wait for the remastered edition to hit PSN, I'm sure my new gaming PC will feel quite lonely rather quickly.

I remember playing the demo for FFX out of an OPM demo disc but never ended up buying it. The last FF I own previously was 8 which I really enjoyed.

Final Fantasy 6 and 9 were my favorite. 10 was probably the last good FF. Braverly Default looks awesome, I'm a get that.
