I heard copyright on Mickey Mouse or the original Steamboat Willie character is being relaxed or expiring. I wonder if this influences the decision to produce this or they'll feel more free to be derivative of this retro animation character.

Well the animation style is totally up to the art director/artist. Okay, I'm just kind of familiar with Bendy. It seemed they were using a style semi-inspired by the cartoons of the Steamboat Willie period.
Or.... they could now have the opportunity to directly reference the cartoon if they didn't before.
