Can You Trust Journalists

The problem is the same companies that were dumping on them before aren't doing anything differently. There's lots of "here's everything we saw" which is fine, but a month ago it was "Xbox dead".

"Finally addressed..." as if MS didn't do that with others. When MS closed studios, they deserved what they got. It is throwing this back up after a massive show is the problem.

It doesn't even say finally addressed. There is nothing negative there. IGN had someone biased towards Xbox doing a puff piece interview. Or are we supposed to believe its not news worthy when Phil Spencer makes his first comment about something that was a big story?

You are also essentially asking for these sites to not be positive because at some point they were negative even though both were justified. It doesn't even make sense.

If Sony had a show half that good, it would have been rainbows and fireworks.

I see very little opinion on MS either way... which is telling after that show. It isn't that they are dumping on Xbox, it is that there's very little positive.

This is how bias works, the mainsteam isn't dumping on Xbox, but they are very much covering it very blandly. There's no shortage of opinions on things that don't go well. (it is the exact same thing the media does with politics). Yet there's an article for every negative point, at least on IGN.

Also no mention whatsoever of Game Pass. Yet it was a "sky is falling" moment when the rumor about non-exclusive games dropped.

It’s been just over a month since the company announced it’s shutting down three studios and reshuffling a fourth. One of the casualties, Tango Gameworks, and its 2023 hit Hi-Fi Rush, seemed to symbolize the best of Xbox in the Game Pass era: a hyper-stylized passion project from a newer team that wowed critics and won awards and wouldn’t have been possible without the “let a thousand flowers bloom” strategy behind the platform’s pivot to a Netflix-like subscription library. In a crushing reversal, however, the deep-pocketed tech giant cut the team, along with storied immersive sim makers Arkane Austin and others. According to internal comments from Booty and the head of parent company Zenimax, there just wasn’t enough bandwidth for one of the three most valuable companies in the world to manage so many studios.

The Kotaku article gets funnier and funnier each time I read it.

Also Kotaku from their Hi-Fi Rush retrospective that they didn't review until after the shutdown.

We never published a review of Hi-Fi Rush last year, though I did write some impressions of the first few hours.

I mean... come on. The spin-o-rama is comical.

You are seeing what you want to see and you are adding negatives even when they don't exist.

Microsoft opened the door for confusion about what their plans were/are

Microsoft opened the door for confusion about what their plans were/are

The "confusion" was manufactured by the media pushing rumors. At one point, I'm pretty sure Gears (which wasn't even announced) and Starfield were going to PS5.

See my follow up post on Kotaku not reviewing Hi Fi Rush, but still harping on it like it is this gaping hole in the gaming world. It is so comically inconsistent.

It is the same thing when the real media says "Candidate X hasn't gained in the polls", that's ignoring the fact that their coverage impacts the polls. Sh** on something mercilessly then complain when things get shut down?

Lets not forget that while some rumors were not true and some we will never really know if they are it all started based on one that was true. That they were releasing a number of multiplatform games. Its not anyone elses fault that they got caught off guard. Some Xbox fans are overly annoyed with these rumors even the true ones because they see them as some kind of an attack on Xbox.

We will keep getting stories about their MP plans as long as they seem to have no rhyme or reason behind their picks and as long as they tell half truths about it.

The rumor was true. The initial games mentioned were 100% right, but the problem is the wild speculation that went along with it. IGN and Kotaku both ran with Starfield, Halo, Gears, etc.

That's what Xbox fans got mad at. You keep talking about inconsistencies and half truths, but that's what the media has done all along. There were numerous stories about Xbox dropping from games completely. They ignored the multiple mentions of a much more powerful next gen console (the fact that MS has said that on more than one occasion is another perfect example of a coverage void).

The media ran with BS, and everyone with a brain saw it. The initial rumor was right with those 3 games. The actual games were listed initially. The "confusion" was manufactured.

Then the media runs with the "MS finally responds".

To contrast, look at the PS5 Pro rumors. There's no speculation,it is super clear that you're reading a rumor. There's been rumors of a monster spec Pro and one that barely is more than the PS5. Rather than speculate, they've slowed down on things, knowing that at least some of it is wrong.

Because everyone with a brain knew they weren't stopping with 4 games and the speculation was off the rails before we even got the reports of it being 4 games.

To contrast with the PS5 Pro? Because nobody cares and it isn't even potentially a big deal. There isn't even a comparison.

True though. Who's been criticising it?

But isn't she more just some streamer than an actual journalist?

She used to work for IGN but now she works at Santa Monica Studios but it seems a bit irrelevant given that she is defending Microsoft here and has praised the show.

Meanwhile he is fanboying it up while pretending to be a journalist.

Certainly we are equally offended by a journalist framing taking away significant value from one tier and raising its price as "a nice option" right?

None of it is "journalism". The headline should say "Xbox GP raises prices, makes significant changes to lower tiers" - with specifics. Not that you think it seems "reasonable", or that there's "backlash" (some of the majors are already saying that, what backlash, this was announced like 2 hours ago lol).

A few simple words can greatly change the "story".
