Looks like I'll be staying put in FL, so I'm moving my desk to an upstairs room nowhere near the router. I'm not going to even try getting wires through walls.
I'm looking for a usb wireless connection that I could hook up to my pc, has a wide range due to distance from room to router, and doesn't affect speed to much for online pc gaming.
Any suggestions?

Do you happen to have any unused Routers around? Those can potentially be turned into a Wireless Bridge.

Not that simple for a beginner, but I suggest it as a way to keep network speed up.

Another thing that might be worth a try if you have a Smart Phone is to make a USB tether connection to the PC so it can access the home network.

Or explain to your wife that because of this you're going to have to knock out some walls.

I made connections between walls downstairs, but never from one floor to another.

I'm with Ace, Use powerline adapters. All the benefits of Wired ( cause it is) with none of the wire headache.

Range is usually mostly dependent on the router, not the adapter. You can get a usb adpater easily enough. The quality of your router will determine how good the connection is (along with walls, etc)

As a complete noob to these adapters....do I need to get two of them?

Oh nice. Haven't heard of these. So you need to buy two to get it to work? Buying one doesn't come with 2 adapters (one for modem/router connection, the other for whatever you want)?

Looks like it has the whole set:
What's in the Box
2 Belkin VideoLink 3 Powerline Internet Adapters, 2 Ethernet Cables, User Manual on CD, Quick Installation Guide.

The hell with it, I just purchased the 3 connection one. It's only 30 dollars, if it doesn't work well, I'll just return it.

Let us know how this works out when you get it, my friend uses it, says it's just as good as a direct connection in terms of latency/speed.

Get a router and use it as a repeater. you can also just get the ones that are a small little box and just plug it in depends on how much coverage you need. oh I see you already got something well ignore my ass then.

If you have a cable line running upstairs I'd get MoCA. Works great and is better than powerline in my opinion.
