Sessler's clips are getting flagged. Maxmillian's clips are getting flagged. What the hell is going on here?

Adam Sessler ‏@AdamSessler 6m
Because everyone has been asking we have not been hit with copyright claims on Youtube. Looking further into the matter.

is anyone else aware of non-gaming Youtube communities that are getting caught up in this dragnet?

Adam Sessler ‏@AdamSessler 5m
Per Youtube's statement Rev3 Games/Revision 3 is a MCN not an affiliate. I'm learning about all this today, had no clear understanding.

I have a lot of Soul Calibur vids talking about gameplay with trailer footage getting flagged by @namcogames Any official word on this?

Cool that some Publishers are already coming forward saying they want to help the people.

And this is why I've held off on starting any kind of YT channel. With the google+ changes to comments recently and actions like this it's rather apparent that YT will be dead in the water in less than 5 years. A new video service will take it's place with 60fps video, perhaps even 5.1 DD. When that happens many people (like myself) will be among the first to take advantage of it and get in on the ground floor so to speak.

Not to mention a new service will likely fall over themselves to keep this kind of thing from happening, at least until they get as big as YT with no real competition in that market.

That is just nuts. Why would a publisher do this? Am I not going to buy a game to play it because I can just watch the cut-scenes on YT?

Some guy is playing through the game and doing commentary and making money off of the game, and the publisher wants that money to go to them. I can sort of see their point but I think it's not a battle that makes any sort of sense for them to fight - if anything, they should be trying to encourage people who have enough subscribers to make that bit of money to continue playing their games.

This is terrible news. I watch a lot of gaming YouTube videos. I hope all is fixed soon.

The reports seem to indicate that it's some google bot that auto-flags content.

It may be due to music in games, might be something else.

You can't make money from a video featuring a song you don't own the rights too.

Just growing pains for what is really necessary tech. Sounds like the publishers are going to work it out with the channel operators.

Is it a lot of trouble ask for permission to do a let's play of GTA V? Is there a lot of work involved?

And what about the soundtrack to the game? Would you have to get permission from the artists as well? Or just the game publisher?

It's considered "fair use" to be able to show reasonably sized snippets of games for review purposes. You shouldn't have to request it at all.. only if you are including significant portions of a "work" in your own "work."

The music should be similar if you don't have long clips of the entire song in your video.

But there's nothing stopping Google from coding a bot that is more strict. They have no onus to let you publish videos, they have the right to do whatever the hell they want with their video service really when it comes to that.

If you really want to avoid Google.. create your own video streaming server and web site..

People sure do act entitled on issues like this. Google doesn't have to host your video, google doesn't have to pay you ad revenue, google doesn't have to do any of that s***. What google DOES have to do is spend a ton of money on legal fees and software to make sure they aren't breaking the law.

I don't think it's that people feel entitled, they're well aware of the rules and most follow them (watch any large channel do a lets play of a recent fallout title and they'll have the in game radio turned off). I think it's the heavy handed way they're going about it. Would it really kill Google to have the bot flag a video(s) then send the channel owner a message stating that their content MAY be in violation and that they have X amount of time (say 72 hours) to rectify it before the bot scans again. All this without a copyright strike that can potentially kill a channel.

I'm not keeping up with all this YT stuff. So the issue is what???

- YT people getting clamped down with copyright claims because they are playing licensed music in the background?
- YT people getting clamped down with copyright claims because they are showing video games and game companies don't like it?
- YT people making money off ads?

Something else or a combo of many things?

Angry Joe always makes sense. I have tons of game playthroughs but I'm not making money from them. I decided not to partner with a network (yet) so I haven't had any new content claim notifications.

Google's been on a roll these past years. Youtube has been getting worse and worse. I'd wish there was an alternative ready so I could switch.

LOL. Reading more about it and watching a few whiny YT videos, it seems the guys trying to make money monetizing their channel with lots of gaming content (mostly licensed music and such). Babies.

But, but., but if I can't make money from it, I have no source of income. I got bills to pay.

Well, then get a real job that gives you a pay cheque every two weeks like 99.9% of other people out there instead of sitting at home uploading videos of yourself playing video games hoping it supports a family of four. These guys should be lucky the whole internet phenomenon and YT community got so big so fast giving these guys a way to make cash. Whether you make $5 or $500,000, YT made it pretty easy to facilitate ad money. The guys are playing video games and crying foul about revenue. Geez.

Out of curiosity..Which YT uploader are you talking about?

Sounds like someone's bitter their half-assed YT channel didn't take off.

Also, Force and those like him? Yeah, those guys? They spend 50, 60 sometimes even 80 hours a week busting their ass on their channels. Why? Because they LOVE what they do, they LOVE their fans and they want to give them as much great content as humanly possible. So you can keep on thinking it's some lazy asshat cashing in on the YT phenomenon or get educated and learn that it's not easy work, it takes time and dedication and MOST of the popular channels (those with 500k+ subs) were built on hard work dedicated to something they love.

Or, you know, just go on being bitter your half-assed channel is dead in the water.

We do our "half assed channel" for fun. All of us have full time jobs and none of our videos are monetized. None of us care about getting some free money from ads. Gaming is a hobby for us and purely entertainment. And with this whole YT fiasco, all of us don't care as it doesn't effect us. Unlike these guys relying on YT clicks for a pay cheque, we already have a form of revenue. It's called going to work and being paid by a company twice a month and auto-deposited into our bank accounts.

As for many of these big subbed sites, most of the videos I've seen are nothing more than themselves videotaping a play session and talking over it with usually a voice taping afterwards added onto it later. Or cobbling together some trailers from game companies and simply uploading the same thing and talking about it. Some of the popular gaming material may be uploaded to YT on 100 or 200 or more channels as every game site, hardcore gamer with a YT site and endless casual fans copying a pasting a video from elsewhere. Hardly groundbreaking stuff.

And besides, no matter how hard someone works, it all comes down to the worth of their product. If these guys are so great at what they do, why even bother with using YT? Just grab a domain name, get some server space and make a website. Doesn't cost a lot of money. My buddy did all the work himself and paid for everything. I paid zero. Upload videos and have full control of ads, ad banners, affiliate money without having to bother with YT policies. My buddy got our modest game site up and running, so surely all these hardworking internet uploading guys could do the same. And my buddy does all of this when he gets home from work after dinner.

However, many of these guys don't want to, won't want to, or simply can't. Instead relying entirely on the YT medium.

I don't have a problem with Google honestly. They are extremely innovative, especially in the web development/development in general area and put out a lot of good tools/toolkits/frameworks.

I've been using youtube less and less lately. That has to do, in part, with the fact that I'm working more lately but also the fact that a lot of the channels I visit used to have great discussion in the comments but they're all fvcked up now. It also has to do with not wanting to show YT any support while google is pulling the BS they have been lately.
