Dangers of updating firmware over wifi

So I just checked and my router has a firmware update. Problem is that none of my devices are hardwired except my 360. In big bold red letter it says: "WARNING: do not update firmware over wifi. Doing so could cause the device to become unusable".


Why such the danger? And anybody got an idea of how I could get around that? My desktop is in the other room, but I have a SurfaceRT and my router has a USB plugin. Is that supported on Surface?
