Dedicated Servers Or Not?

I got so excited for dedicated servers. I swear I remember one of the people who work @ Microsoft announcing dedicated servers for all games at one of those events but maybe I'm mistaken.

lol It's just really hard to decide which system I should get first. I plan on getting both eventually but the 2nd one might be a while. I'd also like to get 2 of the same system so my girlfriend and I can play coop games. I've actually never had such a hard time choosing between systems before. Power of the ps4 is really appealing while Xbox live is also really appealing. I was hoping for some positive news on these dedicated servers to sway me. If they're only going to be used for big budget fps then I really don't care as much.

I want some cool ass 3rd person games like Armored Core with dedicated servers. It sounds so amazing =)
They did say that, but people confuse what they said. What they said was that every game on X1 would have access to dedicated servers. It is up to the dev's to use them.

Oh, I'm sure you've already bought plenty. ;)

For those mentioning KI, they have already stated that they are using the cloud/Azure for updates to the game in addition to balancing for seamless changes. If they are already "paying" to use them for those sort of features, it would make sense to run with the dedicated servers provided by the same platform anyways.

I said what I said..

Wouldn't KI running on a ded server be a bad thing? For a one on one game I don't think it makes a lot of sense. For P2P for a fighting game like this, info only has to go back and forth between the two machines. Throw in a dedicated server and you are adding extra time because everything is sent to the ded server instead of being sent straight to the person you are playing against.

if there is more than 2 people playing, dedicated servers make sense. Not so much with a one on one game like KI

Lag can make fighting game very unplayable. I played ssf4 with lag and its terrible.

A lot of moves/ combos required precise timing.

According to Flynn the Azure access is free, but dedicated servers have to be paid for.

Ms already confirmed and said all games on Xb1 will have dedicated servers.

No they will have access to MS cheap dedicated servers, not all games will use them.

Play any fighter online and then come back to me and say player hosted matches would be better.

Are there any fighters on dedicated servers that we could compare to?

Let's put it this way. Say I'm playing KI with my buddy and we both live in, lets say some where in northern Montana, but the nearest cloud server is in Colorado. Would it be better to have my info go straight to my buddy who only lives a few miles away, or go down to CO and back.

There will be some games where dedicated servers won't be needed or won't be an advantage. Not most them, but some

Cheap servers? Your comment makes no sense. All of MS first party games will support it and it's up to the devs. BF4, COD, and many others confirm dedicated servers with xb1 but only cod is confirmed with dedicated servers for Ps4.

Cheap as in not expensive.
The Titanfall developer told us this.

Most importantly to us, Microsoft priced it so that it’s far more affordable than other hosting options – their goal here is to get more awesome games, not to nickel-and-dime developers. So because of this, dedicated servers are much more of a realistic option for developers who don’t want to make compromises on their player experience, and it opens up a lot more things that we can do in an online game.

You initial post said MS confirmed and said all games on Xb1 will have dedicated servers.
They never said that.

i have played with local friends via the net and got lag

Add having to send your data to some places potentially hundreds of miles away and you'll see even more lag.

Having dedicated servers doesn't mean the of of lag as we know it. It will still exist. But it will make games that have more than two people more fair and consistent.

All games on the Xbox One should have dedicated servers. With the power of the cloud anything's possible.

Hopefully COD Ghosts will have a system where we can pick which server we can play on like the EA setup so once we find a good server with minimal lag for the gamemode we want we can just game relatively lag free for as long as we want....No more sketchy new host every game (10 min) or every host migration (2min or less) in game.

I imagine any developer that has any sort of confidence in their online MP will opt for dedicated servers.

I wonder if the cross plat developers can use Azure tools to host games on the PS4. It would be really cool if the PS4 gamers got to take advantage of Microsoft's superior server technology.

I'd like to hope so, but with a hybrid system I am not sure how they will pull that off

That will not be the case. Not even close.

SONY is renting for a servers, MS own their own data center.

Im sure Sony has their own data centers. What they do not have is a scalable integrated cloud effort. Things like sharding, automatic load leveling, server instancing, and geographic server migration(Azure will move a server instance to a different data center automatically if it will help performance). Microsoft is releasing the SDK for their azure tools no only to the X1 SDK, but to windows, Android, and iOS as well.

Maybe not first party, but it seems like a tiny little leap for a third party cross plat to make use of Azure.

Honestly I can see it happening..they would make far more money that way than keeping it exclusive...they are in the business of making money after all. And if Sony has more marketshare then they would be stupid not to, just like why they brought specific apps to iOS/Android instead of keeping em exclusive to WP8

Right. If the dev thinks that the MP could be a selling point, I'm sure they'll lean towards dedicated servers.

Truth of it , there are a number of potential game changers on the X1. Dedicated servers is one of them. I can't wait to see which if these risk takers (Dedi Servers, Cloud, Rumble triggers, Kinect, NFL, smart glass) really help define next generation.

lol to be honest the replies in this thread have scared me. There is really no telling what games will have dedicated servers. For all we know it could be just first party games and a few 3rd party games sprinkled in here and there. I'm thinking a lot of people are going to be disappointed when reality hits. =/

At least Microsoft still has Killer Instinct to entice me.

1. If a developer isn't experienced making mp work with dedicated servers, they may still utilize peer mesh.

2. If a developer is under the gun, and they don't have the time/expertise to quickly utilize dedicated servers, they may not use them.

3. Using the cloud SDK is free to devs for X1, so not using it really comes down to reasons 1 or 2, and nothing else... So I'd expect to see fewer and fewer games using p2p post launch...
