Defiance Going Free-to-Play This Summer

Players who originally paid for the game will get extra rewards

Written by ChewieOnIce on 04 May 14 at 10:59

In a post on the game's community website, Trion Worlds have announced that last year's sci-fi MMO Defiance would be going free-to-play, starting in June on PC, before moving to consoles in July.

The change in payment model will come as the second season of the tie-in Syfy series airs as a way of encouraging new players into the fold. To reward existing players who shelled out for the original game, these veterans will get a payment of 1,000 Arkforge that can be used for upgrading and adjusting weapon mastery, power rating and rarity. They'll also receive a 30 day pass as a Paradise Patron, which involves:

•Boosts to skill, XP, scrip, salvage, and reputation gain rates that stack with boosts available in the store.
•10% store-wide discount on boosts, costumes, lock boxes – all of it!
•A daily grab bag of two-hour boosts.
•Arkforge from Daily and Weekly Ark Hunter Bonus Lock Boxes. (Playing on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3? Be sure to link your account to get this bonus!)
These rewards sit on top of the extra character slots, loadouts, ark keycode capacity and inventory slots that free-to-play players will need to pay for.

Defiance will be free-to-play from mid-July on Xbox 360 and will include the core Bay Area storyline, end game content and more planned future content for free.

Defiance isn't a bad game at all. I got a good few months of fun from it.

Just got around to watching the show and loved it and was wondering if this game was any good. Reviews on Amazon didn't seem too good but it's pretty cheap so may get it.

the game do go hand to hand with the show but I think this season will go even better.

Not surprising really. In an interview they said that F2P was the plan from the start, which to be honest is insulting to the people who bought it. If F2P is the plan from the start the game should be F2P from the start.

That said, it really wasn't bad a game and I'll probably install it again when it goes F2P just to see what has changed over the last year. The combat was pretty fun but the main problem was the game lacked goals. You kept the same weapons for ages and there was a big lack of missions and content to do for challenge and/or reward.

If it's an MMO, more than likely it will go F2P after a few months. Not sure why more don't go the Guild Wars way and just charge the $60 for the game but not have a monthly fee.

Because they're stupid and ignorant.

I liked the beta of the game before it came out, might have to download this when it goes free to play.

Defiance is the same as Guild Wars but just did one better and made the game free, unlike Guild Wars 2.

that may be but its not making money like how defiance is.

What do you mean? GW2 doesn't have to go F2P because they still sell plenty of copies and the in-game store is fair and popular. Defiance is going F2P because no one is buying the game despite it selling for almost nothing, Steam keys sell for about £1 each on trading forums these days.

Seems like all MMO's end up going the F2P route sooner or later. I imagine that server upkeep can't be cheap, and the paid subscriptions must not be doing it.

Wrong Trion World have learned a way to double their money very cleaver. Rift was making tons of money and then once the shot was setup and people were buying a lot of items (no buy to win) it covered their cost and still made money without the subscription fees.
Defiance made up that money with people buying stuff from the store. You can even get cards from store and use them. Defiance will make even more money when season 2 comes around.

By the way I rather play Defiance over Guild Wars. GW killed it for me when the removed the Holy Trinity.

How is the show by the way? You guys think they'll match the second season of it with the game? If so, they should get to work on ports to PS4, the X1, and maybe even the Wii U if possible.

Sub based games go F2P when the sub numbers start dwindling. It's just the way it is, like Freezasaurus said sub based games are a dying breed. There's one or two exceptions but that's all, one or two. Compare to that to the number of successful sub based games we had years ago and it says all you need to know. Rift went F2P because the player population (and thus sub count) was low. It was evident 2-3 months after launch and is one of the reasons I stopped playing. I was surprised it took them as long as it did to switch to F2P. Defiance had an okay launch but it never really took off. Hopefully F2P will revive Defiance like it revived Rift, but neither games have been more successful than GW2.

I wouldn't mind trying this game. Hope Xbox 360 gets the F2P version even though I am not a fan of the F2P model and would quickly drop the money on a sub. The problem isn't with sub based games - the problem is with a sub based game being able to deliver. Most barely give enough content for a months worth of grinding and the end game is an afterthought. Is it really a wonder that they cannot keep a community thriving beyond two or three months? F2P will just mean most people are playing them as a quick diversion from whatever their main is and won't really invest in the content.

Yea this is also true. MMO's over the past few years have been a sea of trash. Most of them are released a few months (or years) early and lack end-game content and the devs spend the first two months fixing all the problems by the time they announce new content most players have quit from boredem. Most people, obviously, won't continue to pay monthly to play a game where they have nothing to do, or buy the game at all.. Buy to play or F2P games don't get as much pressure in that area. That said, GW2 end-game was non-existent too.

Well, finally bought this game, spent hours downloading all the patches, had to restart it because I lost internet connection briefly and it made me start from scratch to download it all again. Finally finished and I go to play it and get a message saying the servers are down! Went to their forum and they are doing some major patch update that was supposed to take a few hours and by the way the community is reacting I take it has taken a lot longer than that! I'm hoping that I'll get to play some time tonight and I'm really, really hoping I don't have to download another enormous patch!

Final fantasy XIV is going strong and its a sub based game.

Nevermind that game. Final Fantasy XI is still going pretty strong lol. I still play it every day. That game came out 12 years ago on PC i believe, 10 years ago on PS2. It then had a 360 release, tons of add ons. The game has stood the test of time.
