Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One kind of ruins it for me.

I don't really care about Hollywood white washing too much but jesus that's ridiclous

The popular theory is that movies make a ton of money in China and that putting a Tibetan monk in that role wouldn't fly so well with the Chinese gov't. If their movie gets banned in China they lose out on tons of $$$. Movies more and more are looking towards the Chinese audience.

Just came back from seeing it, it's goooooood. Definitely a strong introduction for the character and not a bit of a dud film like Thor 1 was. Lots of nods and references to magical objects and artifacts that comic fans will know and some out of this world CGI. Cumberbatch did good.

I think some main plot points could have been clarified more, in particular regarding the Ancient One. In some ways, Dr. Strange makes me think of Hellboy which I felt had a more coherent plot and some good FX in it's own right. However, Dr. Strange visuals try to be more psychedelic and for the most part this works very well.

I'm hoping other films with surreal visuals get a boost from this as a side effect whether their Indy Flicks or future big budget productions.

Lastly, enjoyed yet another funny Marvel post-credit scene lol.

Yeah, this movie is really, really fun. It's definitely my kind of movie, for sure. It feels both familiar and completely different than anything else. The dialog ranges from heady to hokey, but sometimes it just has to stop taking itself too seriously. I find it a pretty good blend. One minute it's talking about science vs psudo science and magic, the next moment there is something clever or funny and you laugh. The visuals are every bit as good as the trailers led on, and then some.

If you have ever seen a 3D movie and even kind of liked it, you owe it to yourself to see Doctor Strange in 3D. It was definitely meant to be seen that way. It's transformative! This may have taken the top 3D spot for me, and I've seen a lot of 3D movies, as well as have a pretty extensive 3D Blu-ray library at home. I can't wait to add this to my collection next year.

Exactly.

Beware...SPOILERS.

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS.

It had the same beats of a Marvel film but at the same time it was different. Like the start with the rituals and the beheading started out much darker than your Marvel film and the character...probably my fav character in the MCU now. Every other character from Antman to Cap to Stark to Thor to Vision to Scarlet witch to Starlord etc. etc. they're all good characters. Stark is dickish but inherently good. So it was refreshing to have a character that was a horrible selfish human being. It makes his journey all the more exciting as he learns it's not about him. Even at the end he still has those ''cold'' traits but he is changed...the change is subtle and it seems like the character arc is going to stretch in multiple films. Probably the best character arc in the MCU. At the end he's still learning and growing and from the looks of it still has a long way to go. I loved how every time he's outmatched it's his smarts that get him out of those situations not with brute force. That was also a welcome change not just to Marvel films but every superhero film ever. That 3rd act is the most clever and best act of any superhero film ever. ''DORMAMMU...I'VE COME TO BARGAIN''. The visuals are unmatched. It's GOAT levels. Loved the creativity there. Also the ancient one is arguably the 2nd biggest character in this film and she dies. When was the last time that happened in an MCU film ? I loved when she went into her astral and looking outside to reflect on her final moments of death. The cloak of levitation was magificent. Brilliant idea to give it a life form of its own. I think most of the humor in this film came from unexpected and unintended moments like the cloak pulling Strange to a weapon and Strange having no clue and trying to run the opposite side it was funny but the situation presented itself so it felt natural. The ''Adele'' line was the only one that bordered on cringe but maybe that was the intention. I did love the interactions between Strange and Wong. There was one moment that was NOT funny at all with Strange saying something how the warning labels should be at the end of spells and Wong starts laughing uncontrollably...suddenly it became funny because it's not funny. Just goes to show how every individual has a different funny bone. It was fun seeing the all serious Wong lose it like that. Really loved that moment too. Come to think about it most of the humor wasn't meant to be funny...the situation made it funny. When Mordo gives him the wifi password...the joke is that a mystical magical temple far away from civilization uses wifi. It wasn't meant to be laugh out loud funny but more like a chuckle ''hah''. Also diggin the character arc of Mordo. In the comics he was a two dimensional lame villain. Here though he's undergoing a slow change. Starts out as a good person and slowly is becoming seduced by the dark side. I hope it pays off in the sequel. As much as I didn't like Tilda as TAO mainly cause she looked like one punch man she was really good in the role. Kicked ass in every scene. Mads wasn't bad but wasn't great either. But it's understandable having to juggle so many characters in an origin story. He did serve his purpose. So yeah it had the best action of any superhero film and was such a thrill from start to finish. TWS and DS are now my 2 fav films I could watch over and over.

If I had to do a ranking

1-Doctor Strange
2-The Winter Soldier

3-The Avengers
4-Iron Man
5-Civil War
6-GOTG

The rest I don't care much for even though I've enjoyed them all.

And in terms of all comic book films.
1-Spiderman 2.
2-The Dark Knight
3-Dr.Strange
4-The Winter Soldier

We definitely have similar taste in movies. Spider-Man 2 is definitely either #1 or #2 for me, over all. Winter Soldier was quite a surprise for me, how good it was. The first Avengers is in my top 5, but not AoU. Also, even though Superman The Movie is from a bye-gone era, I would still put it in my top 10 somewhere.. I guess I could make a list, but maybe I should watch a few of them over again.

For Doctor Strange, I agree with what you mean about him not changing completely from being quite a dick. In fact, when he got the part, I first thought it was because he looked the part... then I started binge-watching Sherlock. Yeah, a narcissist who is the absolute best in their field, with very little emotion or care for anyone else's feelings: check! The character is VERY similar! In fact, I find the self-proclaimed "High-functioning Sociopath" that is Sherlock has very little arc, compared with Doctor Strange's actual subtle transformation. Of course, this one has an American accent, which he excels at. I really found it interesting that he still chooses to be called "Doctor", even after acknowledging that science is clearly a much weaker path than magic, for him. I think he really believes by the end, that his knowledge of science still makes him smarter, somehow. It will be interesting to see where they go with his character going forward.

That cape: I also read that they used a separate SFX company to make the cape and give it personality. They farmed it out to the company that did Rocket Raccoon in Guardians. That was really good choice in a movie filled with good choices.

One thing that I would really like to see them do with The Ancient One is maybe to look toward what they do for the Lamas in Tibet. That would be to look for the reincarnated child. This could be a great plot device for a future movie. I find that real life process really fascinating I thought of it right after that suspended moment before death scene.

I think what he does is a mix between Science and Magic sort of like the power wielded by THOR's hammer. Also, Dr. Strange as well as THOR uses items imbued with power.

Thor: Your ancestors called it magic...
...but you call it science. I come from a land where they are one and the same.
