DriveClub "making spectacular progress"; release date in weeks to come

The development of DriveClub continues to go "from strength to strength", SCEE has told VideoGamer.com while responding to yesterday's reports highlighting the recent changes at Evolution Studios.

In a statement provided to us this afternoon, SCEE said that it "would like to make it very clear that the development of DRIVECLUB on PS4 is going from strength to strength. The announced studio changes across WWS yesterday have not affected the development of DRIVECLUB or the DRIVECLUB team, which has always had great direction and continues to do so.

"We have full confidence that the game will deliver on its PS4 promise to be the first truly socially connected racing title and we are very pleased and excited by the calibre of work from Evolution Studios.

"The progress being made on the game is spectacular," Sony continued, "so we're looking forward to sharing an update on development, release date and videos of the game in action in the weeks to come. We thank you for your patience and assure you, it will be worth the wait."

SCEE also confirmed that "DRIVECLUB does have a Game Director at the helm who we will be revealing very soon."

Yesterday, VideoGamer.com revealed that Sony would be leading a "focused restructure" within three of its studios – including Evolution Studios, Guerrilla Cambridge and SCE London Studio. It was later confirmed that DriveClub's game director Col Rodgers had left the studio in February for personal reasons unconnected to the layoffs.

DriveClub is expected to launch later this year following its earlier delay from November 2013.

It doesn’t come as a surprise to me that they are making progress after the director of the game walked. It seems obvious to me that his vision for the game was either not working or unpopular within the development team or with Sony itself. There was probably some push-back from the director which necessitated his departure from the studio. Of course this is all speculation on my part. I’m just hoping for a fun racer.
 
Sounds like they're trying to counteract the lukewarm press over the past few months, about the delays, the "going back to the drawing board" comment (not a very wise choice of words). "Going from strength to strength." "Spectacular." The patient was losing a lot blood and looking pretty pale. They're trying to give him an infusion.

I'm such a cynic.

It is a little hard to judge, but we don't really know their full plans for Q4 at all I think. I feel they are trying to annouce games closer to release like MS use to do and MS kind of touted too much last E3, but should have more to show this year atleast.

I'm sure they have some good things to come with PS1, PS2 and PSN as well.
 
It would be really great for a video game journalist to actually do some investigative work and get the real story of what has been going on with this title from it's abrupt launch delay just weeks before release to 1Q release delay to change of leadership to this statement. You gotta think there is some big coverup of issues that is going to either finish as an awesome tale of redemption or a Driver 3-like fiasco.

It better be good. Cause if its anything less than Forza's 1080P and a
locked 60 frames(not one single PS4 game has done this yet) then things are going to get really ugly. Its been in delay hell so it has to meet these requiments or Sony's prestigous 1st party image will take a massive hit while the game will be mocked from here to the moon.

You forgot the layoffs at the studio as well.

If this game releases this Summer, combined with the layoffs and the huge delay, something's not right.

I even heard a quote from them saying they technically "had room to push" even further on ps4, so that tells you the game engine is not completely next level stuff if they can do that on a console with the weak specs like ps4. Its basically a 2012 gaming PC. I love the lighting on the 360 version, I rented it just to see it and its unbelievable how they pulled it off with decent performance, but as the quote said, its basically a last gen game on steroids, hence the good performance.

Layoffs don't happen during crunch time of game development but often do when a title is content complete and is moving into cert, so either it is virtually finished and could see a summer release or it is a long, long ways off.

My gut feeling says it's the latter. I just hope they don't get it out just to get it out. We saw what a disaster a rushed to market game could be. I'm looking at you Battlefield 4.
 
A release day announcement is imminent any day now, according to Sony.
Hopefully they'll have new game info and a video too.

The game is also now listed at Sony Rewards site.

It's already a free game in the Forza XboxOne bundle.
Maybe it'll be a Games With Gold game for XboxOne in 2018.
 
If DriveClub releases in mid Summer i'm going to have a blast. Can't wait for some heart pounding racing action baby.
 
Funny people force an idea to play a game at 30fps. I'll gladly accept it and play it if it's good.

Hope all these people saying these things never played PS1 games at all.
