I've looked into an old school way of making a computer share files on a LAN. I'm looking at this device and wondering if it would be a simpler setup if it accepts USB Sticks or USB HHDs.

I'm wondering if something like this would work for MP3 or Video streaming?

For what it's worth, I hacked the hell out of an old beat up computer and turned it into a functioning NAS.

I found an OS called FreeNAS that installed onto one USB and used another 16 GB USB key as the storage space. I think the hard drive is busted so I'm not using it.

FreeNAS can manage storage different ways so I'm using a Samba-like method to share with Windows. It does seem that Linux machines can see it on the network to.

Just set up your host machine with all the storage and share the files and folders you want over the network... or am I missing something fancy you're looking to do?

Well... some of this I'm doing as part of an Internship I'm doing with a small business. So I'm re-purposing old equipment to save money.

I had considered having the owner just buy a device like this, but reusing this old PC is a nice option.

Originally, I did have a Samba share on another desktop, but I like having the "File Server" be a dedicated device just for that task.

Honestly, I suppose I did enjoy doing "Something Fancy" as this is hopefully a learning experience contributing to my college program.

For a small business you want something like this sitting on your network...

Anything short of dedicated file store will be wonky and fail and will require routine fiddling by IT staff. These things just work. Everything is backed up locally on mirror. Then there is option to sync it to ofsite backup (which is required if it has invoices and accounts receivable info on it, it is the law)
