EDGE: Xbox, why? The baffling incompetence of the Xbox One interface

I stopped clicking on their links when they were wrong about my next console. Having owned and operated multiple websites that depend on ad views, I am happy to NOT give them any. Also, the X1 interface is pretty easy to use, but it has some glitches. And guess what? The system has been out for less than 3 weeks. Did anyone expect it to be perfect, without need for improvements at launch? Maybe EDGE did.

I agree with them, but it will improve.

minus the stuttering stuff. that can be fixed by completely shutting down the device and booting up.

To me it feels like they turned everything into an "app" and lost the cohesiveness of the 360 UI.

bringing back the guide menu when you press the home button would definitely fix a lot of this. Being able to access pretty much everything from there was awesome on the 360.

I always use voice. "Xbox go to..." has been amazingly fast and instantaneous for me. My 360 was getting increasingly slow as of late, so that has helped with my opinion. It isn't perfect but the experience has been amazing over all. I can't imagine where it will be in 4 or five years.

i was on another site that posted this article and the thread was closed within 20 posts because fanboys couldn't shup up about it. So far, the discussion that takes place here is like night and day from there. Thank you people of Union for making this place an actual discussion forum.

While I agree with SOME of the article, the overwhelming hatred/condescension in the article makes it all sound more like an insipid opinion piece than an actual review, or objective take on the UI

It is a baby system.. the 360 had YEARS of upgrades, refinements... MS will fix these things.

There's one thing I'm sure of and that's Microsoft's ability for future fixes and updates. Things might not be perfect, but there's a vision there.

If this article was about the PS4 I assure you it would be much worse.

This exactly.

Right now the Xbox Interface is very clunky and Microsoft's obsession with trying to turn everything into Apps is just ridiculous and completely stupid. Achievements are also a pain in the butt now.

They absolutely NEED to bring back the guide button.

I'm confident Microsoft can fix it if the want, but lately they seem a little far up their own a** with voice recognition, apps, and just overall trying and failing to mimic apple and google.

On a side not though, I do dislike Edge.

There are certainly some issues with the OS that will likely be ironed out in short order, but as per usual Edge goes for the dramatic over-exaggerated angle for maximum clickage. The kotaku article was a bit of a "me too" reaction I guess Jason farted out in a few minutes after reading this article.

Why are people talking about the guide button? You go to the full guide when you hit the center button or say "xbox go home". same thing. Or are we talking about a stripped down menu?

The UI was designed for voice commands- that much is obvious. Once you know where to go, you can eliminate digging through sub-menus, which is fantastic, imo. The problem is the slightly disjointed structure, but I don't get the confusion. It's not that hard.

As for functionality: that will come. Not sure what the issue is, really. What's there works well. Same with gestures- The work great for me. I just think some people were trying to use it like the old kinect, when the new way is different, but much better..

yeah i love the direction the new UI is going... it is different, and to be expected, people are recoiling. Once this thing is fleshed out, we will see an already slick UI become incredible

Remember the original vision was an always online box with Kinect always connected. In this scenario it is very easy to navigate just with voice, granted the UI and navigation needs updating and refinements will come in due course.

Don't know what's the fuzz about isn't the PS4 the same as far as features that are missing offline?

I thought I've read user impressions regarding this. Too lazy to go back and find the quote... But if I'm wrong then I'm wrong.

I'm not the biggest fan of the UI but when it comes to next gen it's easily the best. Microsoft has defiantly lost some of it's old business practices in the recent years probably due to the fear of tablets. It's sorta like with Windows 8. There is a weather.com app that tells you the weather, but it is faster just to go to weather.com's website and check weather then move onto the next thing. No roadblocks encountered. I found windows 7 widgets to be more efficient but no one really used them.

I could write an article called "The baffling incompetence of Edge x1 hit pieces - have they used the X1 enough to find actual real world problems with the x1 UI?"

As far has hit pieces go, this one reads like they have been reading the support forums and internet trolls to research their article. They get a baffling amount wrong, and they miss about a half a dozen actual real world issues with the X1 UI, which I will not articulate here, because I don't want to help them. Problems that they would see if they bothered to sit down with the X1 and play through a couple of games.

This article is a rehash of everything then was obvious in the first half hour, and most of their complaints seem to stem from the idea that the X1 interface is not exactly like the x360 interface... Like hand wringing old people that I used to support way back in my help desk days.

From Larry Hyrb (Mr. Nelson)

In a post on Reddit, Hryb -- better known as Major Nelson -- responded to complaints about One's party system and the lack of a guide overlay similar to the one on Xbox 360. While he didn't specify exactly what kind of fixes are in the works, he did offer some reason for hope, stating, "I had a meeting today about much of this and I can say that things will get better. I can't offer a timeline of a list of what till be addressed first, but we are aware of the issue and things will get better."

Anything new is going to garner criticism and praise. The PS4's UI is the same old and no one is going to talk about it because it doesn't inspire anyone to do so.

MSoft should take this as a complement because it is obvious the people over at Edge want something new and The One provides that.

have to agree with EDGE. so many things wrong with the UI/kinect on xbox one. why the hell could they not just improve upon the 360's UI instead of going backwards with this one.

They did and it did. What I do find curious is that none of this was mentioned in initial hardware reviews. Why? I know I raised many of these issues a week ago. Bringing the guide back would be a huge step to making it less clunky. Achievements are a mess. Why can't I see what I unlocked in game? As is the friends list. Where is the battery indicator? Why am I not notified when my friends or -- at least -- my favorite friends come on line? No HD management? Really? So many odd choices and steps back from the 360 that it makes me think that it was a UI designed by committee and some that had a say never picked up a 360 in their lives. You are right though, it will improve. It has to.

It is odd to see so many disagree and attack Edge but cannot refute the issues point by point. What exactly are they saying that is incorrect? I'm surprised more aren't asking what took the media so long to catch up to these obvious issues and why did they not mention them in their hardware reviews at launch.

Haven't read the article but the X1 needs to streamline the UI for those not using Kinect.

I do prefer the 360 UI more though.

Looking at people's replies I guess the honeymoon period with some sites is over with the X1.

FamousMortimer from Gaf is stating on his blog that rumors abound that the entire party system is being redone and that may take up to a year. Link here:

"Microsoft over the coming months will be replacing the entire party/notification/XBL-related UI parts wholesale. They won’t be fixing them like they previously had been telling developers. This is definitely a smart move and the right decision for the console longterm but it will have some fairly significant short-term implications. They likely won’t be finished until well into spring or possibly early summer (update: one of the sources of this story just told me “It may take up to a year” HOLY CRAP). "

EDIT: I do not think it will take a year. I would think six months tops, but I'm no expert.

I read about this from his twitter, it really does make me wonder why they didn't release the console a little later on.

XBL features like chat/party chat/cross game chat are the bread and butter of Live Gold use, these are the first features that should have been in check upon release.
