This is something we’ve seen happening in almost every God damn gaming event these past years. Both Sony and Microsoft have been using PCs to showcase their games. And as you’d expect, during this year’s Gamescom, Microsoft decided to ‘camouflage’ a number of PCs in order to showcase one – or even more – of its titles.

What I find also funny is that the PC systems that were used were using Nvidia’s hardware. As we can clearly see in the first image, the latest version of the GeForce Experience was not even installed on them. Which is kind of weird as both Xbox One and PS4 are powered by AMD’s GPUs. I guess the PC version of Ori and the Blind Forest runs best on Nvidia’s hardware then.

I was actually at gamescom and most companies were doing this. It was hardly hidden either, a lot of times you could see the PC and mouse in the cage underneath the console.

Dead island 2 was an example of this. I even tried wiggling the mouse to eee if I could use it ...but was only a ps4 controller.

They just put the consoles there for marketing... Especially so when folks take photos... You see the game and console together.

I see no issue with it... Big drama out of nothing.

To be fair, PC can be set to console spec setting (give or that), so developers can test the game, without hooking up an xbox or Dev kit. However, putting a dummy xbox is just poor judgement, & people will accuse them of trying to deceived people.

They should just put a small sign that games is on PC, but set to X1 spec, as the game is still in development. It will save all the drama.

Two things I don't get:

1) Why anyone is surprised by this
2) Why people get mad and/or blast companies for doing this

We all know games are developed on PC then moved over to their console counterparts. Why would ANY developer take the time and expense of putting code into console form just to show a small part of it at a conference? It would make no sense.

So long as what they show is an honest representation of the final product then there's no reason to get riled up about it.

What I get ticked off about is that they're still creating games with consoles in mind and dumbing down the PC version for "parity". Now that's something to actually be surprised and mad about.

It wouldn't be half as bad if thy didn't put dummy Xbox.

As for parity, its mainly to save development cost I guess, or Console makers 'encourage' developers to make their game as close to PC as possible. There is like only one way to do it....

"Here we go" what? there's nothing to "go" "here" "we" with.

This is a matter that isn't.

Seems like MS and Sony love dat Nvidia hardware to show off their games. Can't say I blame them. Nvidia's Gpus combined with their superior drivers over AMD's, provide the best stability.

Microsoft and Sony and possibly even Nintendo have done this for years now. I don't see the big deal, as long as they aren't trying to deceive, which I don't feel they have.

So games coming to PC were shown off on a PC and this is some how the worst thing to ever happen since the last worst thing to ever happen. Please, give me a fookin break.

The thing is no one knows if these games will look as good, on consoles, as they do now after they go gold.

This has been going on for a loooong time and it's not exclusive to one company.

True. Didn't Sony show off AC Unity at their E3 presser using PC's?
Probably.

Gaming is a funny industry, because history never changes. Yet people act like it's a new thing every year. Although some are smart enough to know, but just troll for clicks.

Back in the 80s, gaming mags and game boxes would sometimes show a pic of the best version (C64/Amiga), but the actual game would look like junk if it was for a lower end system. I know, because when my bros and I bought Apple II games, the real Apple games looked like ass compared to those great looking C64/Amiga images on the back of the box.

That was Ubisoft at the MS presser, AC Unity wasn't show at Sony's press event. :) Batman Arkham Knight was on PC at Sony's show though. I think with 3rd parties they decide how they want to show their games anyway.

I think what the people are talking about here is that the playable games on the show floor aren't being played on the consoles but on computers. I would guess they don't want to send all of those debug units out when they are still working hard on the games and it's just easier for them to send out PC's but I can't say for sure.

Yeah you're right. It was Batman.

On the second part of your post I agree as well. I just hope all the games shown are a damn near identical representation of the final product.

You show off these things on what's going to make the game look/run best with unoptimized code. You also want to show it off on something that can run flawlessly while being cramped up.

PCs fit the bill over some small console boxes.

Nice to see many reacting 'so what'. Seriously, what the f*** is so new about this? Hasn't this been a case for years, even during the first year of this generation?

Ummm... Ori and the Blind Forest is coming to PC too, right? As well as 360.

I'd bet my left nut that PC is the lead platform and is probably the most complete/stable build.

Anyone shocked?

This is actually quite funny, everyone expects this kind of thing for a console that hasn't been released yet but the Xbox One has been out for months, no excuses to be showing it off on PCs.
