Gamespot PC/PS4/X1 visuals experiment. Can you tell the difference?

I watched the video in windowed form at 360p and couldn't tell the difference.

None of this will stop the bickering I hope you know. :p

Dang. Though with the power gap being so small, I am not surprised most gamers don't know the differences as to which console is which.

I remember in marketing class our teacher did the same thing with Coke, Pepsi and RC Cola. He had RC Cola in all three glasses in one of the tests, and everyone was confident that they knew which one was pepsi, which was coke and which was RC (including me). He fooled us.

I do think this topic is way overblown, but this was a fun little test. Like Kvally was saying, it reminded me of the "Pepsi challenge." Two of the guys seemed pretty on the mark; the others seemed stumped. It was fun to watch their reactions when they got it wrong or when they got fooled.

This went as I expected. People need to be told what to think, because the differences are so miniscule.

Should be an easy test. Assuming the PC is decent enough, it should have better details and a better frame rate. While the console game should be capped at 30 fps.

Most gamers should be able to isolate the PC version. As for X1/PS4 depends on the game.

The final control test is a laugh. Goes to show even Gamespot editors can't tell.

Yup.

During launch, gamers were all jacked up when IGN posted images of CoD: Ghosts. They said the PS4 upload is 1080p and X1 is 720. Turned out they accidentally botched the upload and both sets of images were set at 720p. Before the correction, some gamers were claiming one looked better. To me they looked the same. After they stated the correction, suddenly dead silence. gamers couldn't even tell a 1080p image from a 720p image as it turned out both were 720p by accident.

Just goes to show most of us need advanced equipment to tell us differences unless its a PC. I've had friends over and played a similar trick just switching back and forth on my x1/ps4 on different games and those gamers rarely got it right, you could tell they were just guessing.

No, that's not what it shows. It shows that if you deceive people into thinking you are presenting three different versions, and then you tell them their job is to decide which is which, people will fail. That is not really a surprise, since the setup guarantees failure.

I was more impressed with the two who did get it right, on the legitimate trials. I doubt I'd be able to tell the difference, personally.

If people in the test used their head, they could have said they are the same. However, some of them even tried to validate their choice with reasons.

If someone is asked to test drive 3 cars which look the same, but there's actually a basic, mid model and premium model with slightly different engines. If the car was actually the same, I'm sure car experts would say it's a trick test because all had the same feel. Although casual car users would make up reasons why they think one car is one model and another.

It all depends how easily tricked some people are.

It's like at work when some people calculate profit margin from retail price (going down), but some like to calculate it from cost (going up). The $$$ involved are the same, but the margin % going cost up is always bigger, but the $$$ are equal. Same shyt, but framed differently.

I know I could spot 30 vs 60 fps, but otherwise? No way I could spot minor differences in resolution unless they were side by side. My only issue with the video is the monitors were a little small. Obviously the bigger the screen the bigger the difference appears. Still though, I think it shows how minor these differences are. People get too hung up on 1080p. I bet many don't even know exactly what that means without googling it.

Lol, no not @ all it speaks volumes. Some perceived a difference. That is why it was an excellent test. They could have answered it as the girl did that they couldn't tell but they definitely knew the better version was the PC...

In favor of the defense, "some" people are "dumb." Actually, better put: society as a whole, the majority, the casuals, the masses... are in general "dumb." So actually, the video cannot really prove anything one way or another.

It really depends on the person. Some will lead themselves to a viewpoint based on what others tell them. But some will give their own viewpoint that goes against the grain.

There was a TV show that tested consumers. One table had organic apples. The other regular apples. People tried them and were asked which are better. Many said the organic batch. Even going so far to describe why they tasted better. They tricked them and told them all it's the same regular apples. lol

Well I guess you could be so desperate to disprove this interesting little test if it bothers you so by calling the entire human race stupid "in general"? Now maybe, just maybe the folks tested aren't mentally handicapped as you've implied? To some of us it certainly does prove some seen a difference when there was and wasn't one. I'd like to see the far cry portion add the PC framerate equal to the consoles to see then if as many could guess all 3/3.

The majority of people are dumb. It's just the truth.

I could tell there was a difference, very minor, but not sure what exactly the difference was. I would be happy playing any version.

An example, I thoroughly enjoyed the new Tomb Raider on Xbox360. I rebought it for X1 on sale. I know it looks a little better, but did that make me enjoy it any more? I don't think so.

I noticed the PS4 versions right away. That superior quality is unmistakable. X1 and PC versions were the same washed out mess.
