...and have some questions if you'll indulge me as I'm a total noob :)
  1. Getting the 32 GB model. Does it support external storage at all? 32 GB seems small.
  2. How often do Nintendo do digital sales? Interested in some of the VC stuff. is there a good twitter account to follow for sale info?
  3. How many games support play from the tablet controller...is there a good list?
  4. Do all Wii games work on WiiU?
  5. Game Recos? (I'll be getting the bundle with Mario U and Luigi U and buying Mario Kart)
Thanks folks!

1. Yes, there are several options for additional storage.
2. Sales for Nintendo games are not likely. They occasionally do sales for less popular games, but don't rely on frequent discounts.
3. A good amount. I would say the games you want will have the feature.
4. As far as I know, yes.
5. For you and your son? Smash Bros., Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D World. For solo play? Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Rayman Legends.

Going with the Target deal on Sunday $250 with Super Mario 3D and Nintendo land (I think that's what it's called). I've got a red card should axe the tax and I, trading Mario for $27 plus some more because I am a GCU member. Should work out to about $200 or less out the door.

It's for my daughter. (Yeah right).

Thanks for all of that info! I'm excited for my son to open it on Christmas so I can play it ;).

I would get the Target deal starting Sunday, Super Mario 3D World is much better than Mario U imo.
Thanks for this info! Going to try to price match this at Best Buy on Sunday morning (my target and BB are right next door to each other :)).

I have $75 in BB credit as well so that should make it $175 before tax.....then I'll buy 2 games from BB in the B1G1 - 40% off deal. I'll probably end up spending $260 out the door with 3-4 games (I'm also GCU). Nice!

UPDATE: Shoot, realized I'll need a pro controller as well so that's probably $300 out the door. Still good deal.

Hope you're not looking at Wii U games for the Best buy deal as Nintendo games don't count. :(

Ok, having some fun researching this and building a list of stuff to buy. The list keeps growing So far I'm at:

WiiU 32GB Console w/ Super Mario 3D World and NintendoLand - $250 w/ price match
Mario Kart 8 - $48 (GCU)
DK:TF - $24 (GCU + B1G1 - 40% off)
Pro Controller - $50
Wii Controller - $40
Hori MK8 Wheel set - $20

Brings me to about $390 out the door and I'll probably just need to get another Wii controller for MK8 set for a while. If I'm feeling cheap, I'll probably omit the last 3 items.

Hmmmm....not according to CAG post:

Ah so must be a different sale now. Last I saw they had a buy 2 get 1 free deal but only non Nintendo stuff. Well in that case hopefully my local store has some Wii U/3DS games I want.

I would pick up Sonic Lost World and Boom used. I enjoyed both but Lost World is more polished and I think it still has the free DLC.

Nintendo site has Wii motes (motion plus) for 20 bucks with nunchuck for 20 plus shipping. 15 delivered is a pretty sweet deal from Amazon.

Wii remotes are cheap.

You can get the remote, sleeve and a nunchuk for $15 delivered on Amazon.

Amazon product

Thanks but no thanks. Those aren't Nintendo branded and we all know 3rd party controllers tend to be substandard with a few exceptions. Looking at the reviews for that its a crap shoot and they also aren't the Wii-more Plus type.

  1. Getting the 32 GB model. Does it support external storage at all? 32 GB seems small.
-- Yup it supports it, Quite well even if you ask me.
  2. How often do Nintendo do digital sales? Interested in some of the VC stuff. is there a good twitter account to follow for sale info?
-- No, and it is one of my gripes with Nintendo, I can understand why they don't put their Wii U games on Sale, but classic games should be a lot cheaper. Not only too introduce a whole generation to the system, but 5 euros for Super Mario Bros, while I have the cartridge upstairs collecting dust... is a bit much :p.
  3. How many games support play from the tablet controller...is there a good list?
-- All of them, but not all games have game modi that are really well designed with the controller. I would say the Wonderful 101 and Zombii U are the ones to look for if you want good examples of game play integration. But all games have remote play so you don't have to hog the Screen ;).
  4. Do all Wii games work on WiiU?
-- As far as I know, yes. But there might of course be the odd obscure title that doesn't seem to cooperate that I do not know off. The Wii had a HUGE library of third party "Me too" waggle games.
  5. Game Recos? (I'll be getting the bundle with Mario U and Luigi U and buying Mario Kart)
-- If you are into old school gaming, movies and tokatsu movies? The Wonderful 101 :). It is a thrill ride of culture references with so many in there that you can't even count them. Fantastic music, fantastic graphics and each level just outdoes the previous one, just when you think it can't get more epic... they kick it up a notch. The gameplay is considered "hard" but nothing a can do attitude can't fix ;).
-- Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It is fantastic to play alone or coop and the music and graphics are perfect :).
-- Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. If you haven't played the original this is a good chance to catch up with a classic that is fantastic. The graphics will make you feel like you're playing a Ghibli Movie ;).
-- Bayonetta 2 if you are into Devil May Cry like Action gaming.
Thanks folks!
-- Don't mention it, welcome to the family of reasonable gamers who put fun before shouting on forums and comparing E-peen :).

Picked up Hyrule Warriors and Bravely Default today at BB. And with that no more games for a while. Within the last month or so I've purchased:

Super Smash Bros
Captain Toad
Super Mario 3D World
Hyrule Warriors
ZombiU
TMNT: Danger of the Ooze
Bravely Default

To be honest a few I purchased now even though I won't get to them for a while so I would hit $1500 at BB this year to stay Elite.

whoa almost missed this post. Thanks!

So got the target deal but the one I went to didn't have the SM3D/NL bundle so got the SMU/LU bundle for the same price. Got MK8 and Wind Waker (will get DK:TF in a few months) at BB for $71 after tax. Overall I'm happy with the haul but wont be opened until Christmas so kinda bummed I can't play with it now. ;) Thanks again to all for the assistance/suggestions! Son is going to love it.

Yup, he's going to go ape sh*t even without DK:TF ;). BTW, was also a huge Amiga fan back in the day. I owned 5 different Amigas from 1988. Yes, I'm that old :).

Thanks again for the notice on the controllers on the Ninty site. For those wondering, Ninty has refurb controllers on their site for $15 or with nunchuck for $25 (nunchuck also available separately for $10 refurb). Picked up 2 of the black Wii-mote Pluses refurbed for $30 + shipping.

Ok, so decided to "trade" the SMU/LU bundle for the SM3DW/NL bundle. After looking at reviews, both games are reviewed higher respectively in the SM3DW/NL bundle and it'll be good to have more of a party style game instead of LU anyway. Also, after watching some vids, SMW3D looks more fun than SMU to me. So now I'll have:
  • Super Mario 3D World
  • Nintendo Land
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Legend of Zelda WW
I think that is a better spread of genres (Platforming, Party, Racing, Adventure). Got the 2 refurb controllers from Ninty today and also went and got the Hori racing wheels (2-pak) for MK8....anybody using these wheel attachments?

So, here's my plan for Christmas:
  1. Unpack Wii U and setup on Christmas Eve after son goes to bed. My system is complicated and want to get it integrated so we can just play in the AM. I'm guessing/banking on that he won't even notice the Wii U is in the entertainment system...just another black box :).
  2. Wrap the games and the Hori controller and have him open those and watch his face as he realizes that we must also now have a Wii U....priceless. We will likely leave it for the last set of gifts otherwise he won't open anything else :).
  3. Win Best Dad award ;)

Did he ask for a Wii U? If so I'd pull the Christmas Story present reveal and make it look like he didn't get one. Then say hey what's that on the entertainment center?!

Good choice New Mario U is great but 3D World is one of he best Mario games ever.

We're doing something similar for my kids (13 year old daughter & 10 year old son).. but we will do the normal open-presents on Xmas morning then leave to my in-laws for the day. My plan is to get them to the car and while they are getting buckled, I will run back inside (I'll say I forgot something) and put the Wii U under the tree- rather than including it with their smaller presents from the morning. If I do that, then when we get home there will be this box under the tree when we get back. I will say:

"Hmmm... it looks like you guys forgot to open a present. Oh, nevermind.. Maybe it's for me!??"

*acting like it's really mine, until they undoubtedly dash in front of me to verify if it is theirs*

Then I will let them open it.. Maybe..

We bought the Wii U Mario Cart/Nintendo Land System and now I am wondering what other two games I should get them? I want to get Smash Bros for them and one other game.

Neither of my kids got into Mario Galaxy or New Super Mario Bros on Wii, so I am hesitant to get Super Mario 3D World despite it getting universal praise by reviewers.. so I will probably rent that if either of them show interest. Then again, my son was only 5 years old at that time (it was too difficult for my 5 year old) and my daughter didn't have enough patience for playing the popular platformers like Mario, Donkey Kong, and even Kirby. Decisions, decisions.

The Zelda option: Hyrule Warriors is 'hack and slash' and Wind Waker is 'action-adventure' and both are single player, but awesome, right? Perhaps I should get one of those instead of another Mario title? It is good to have choices, but I know that Smash Bros and Mario Cart is going to be a big win either way.

Smash Bro's and Bayonetta ;) . I have not tried Hyrule Warriors yet but Wind Waker is a fantastic game but is much slower pace. Donkey Kong is a great game but becomes very challenging at later levels.

Regardless sounds like a great Christmas at your house
