Halo (A Silver Lining) - Season 2

So, is that last scene in the trailer, "That" scene from Halo 2 with the bomb (or similar?)

This certainly looks way better visually. My big worry is that they are still losing the hero story of Master Chief. MC wouldn't want around moping with a hood over his face wondering about his place in the universe. I get they want to try and add some depth, but I think they lost a lot along the way.

It definitely feels more like Halo overall.

Agreed. My big issue with both this and the last Witcher season (which I never finished) is they spend FAR too much time on boring, shallow characters with unimportant & distracting side plots to pad series length. Too many of these series think they can become Game of Thrones despite only having a tiny number of characters anyone is remotely interested in.

In my option, no less than 75% of the time should be spent on MC for a show like this to work. You can't spend enormous amounts of time on other irrelevant and annoying characters until you've earned it via storytelling or fan response.

My theory is that these streaming services are trying to keep costs down on visuals. Even Last of Us suffered from this, but it got carried by sticking to the story and having good acting. Even in the trailer, MC barely has a helmet on.

And Halo still being one of the most expensive shows of all time shows hard it is

The pandemic ruined this shows first season. Originally they had sets and were supposed to “film on location” throughout Canada and Europe, but then got switched to smaller locations/sets, had to increase the cg, and did tons of re-edits.

This time I think it was entirely shot in Iceland. There was talk about New Zeland but i don’t know if that happened.

Then don't take the project on.

These "cost cutting" measures only lead to smaller viewer numbers, less potential new subscribers, and a disgruntled fanbase less likely to watch a sequel/second season.

If you look at how something like Game of Thrones saved money, it did it in a way that 1. Actually made something even more exciting to see.2. Kept large scale battles to the most important ones which had zero negative impact.

Imagine if GOT saved money by penny pinching the Red Wedding or Battle of the Bastards.

If they make that final scene from Reach in this show, it's gonna hit me right in the feels

The helmet is just a symptom of the larger problem - the problem is that they've drastically changed who Master Chief is. They are trying to add a ton of nuance and depth to a character, and that radically changes the story.

It feels like they are going for a more Battlestar Galactica type story (a great show, but different). In BSG, there was a complex interweaving between the two sides.

Halo doesn't have this. The Covenant are bad. They glass planets and are pursuing an objective which will lead to everyone's destruction. We need a hero to counter this.

The depth and nuance comes from other characters around that main fight.

I think back to Last of Us. That's a very simple story at the heart of it. It has powerful moments in a world that is falling apart. That's what this show needs.

The problem is they didn't have the writing to pull it off. Halo just doesn't have enough story for a TV show so taking a lot of liberties is necessary.

However they could and should have adapted The Fall of Reach
