If you were releasing a new console this gen, how would you?

Choose your console manufacturer, launch date, and specs(optional)

To me, it seems like about 4 years from now seems like the sweet spot. Xb1 and ps4 are incredibly underpowered already, so releasing something with even medium level specs in 2018 would blow the doors off these POSs...

My launch

Manufacturer: Google
Release: Fall 2018

2-2.5x the tflops of ps4
16 GB DDR5(14 for gaming)
$425(mind you this is in 4 years, much cheaper parts by then)
I'm not a tech guy per say, so thats just a guess.

Basically, I would release a ps4-like design, but a 2018 version, but not short change the cpu and launch games. Start working on AAA exclusives now.

Special feature:
Google Canvas: Developers and gamers instantly have access to a game editor built into all consoles. It would function similar to xbox one's Spark, but preloaded on the console. Players can start making and selling games day one on Canvas. A robust rating system is implemented to push only the most interesting games.

So this would give me a strong entry especially with mulitplatforms, so at the earliest, the next generation won't start for another 7 years, this gives me time to taper back my launch to theirs if I decided to do so. Can you imagine how much ps4/xb1 will be struggling to run BF6-7 by then, and then this monster console(by comparison) shows much mid-generation and chews them up?

Consoles have always been under powered compared to PC at release...and substantially so. That will never change to do product development time, R&D and marketing.

That said, my launch would be

Manufacturer: Apple
Release: Fall 2016

2-2.5x the tflops of the X1
32GB DDR5 (31 for gaming)
4TB HDD
Internet Required
Closed architecture
$499.99

No optical disk drive, similar in design to the Xbox One with a larger case for better cooling. Mobile OS just for messaging and chat and movie playback. Has built in power brick, has a power cord, HDMI connection, 4 USB 3.0 or newer, (bluetooth) headset.

Would love for it to have the ability to let you sign into Steam, PSN+ or Xbox Live and cross compatibility through dedicated server networks.

True, but the 360 was actually fairly powerful compared to PCs when it launched, and did well. It wasn't more powerful, but it was up there. BTW, 30 GB of RAM in two years? lol damn!

Nah, the 360 was way behind PC's at release...even more so than the PS3 was. They were nearly 5 years behind.

All that for $500 = you bankrupt.

All you really need to do is up the specs a little from what we have now. So..

Manufacturr: Who cares
Release: 3 years a go

GPU around the ATI 280 mark
Memory 10GB DDR5 ( 8GB for gaming)
OS: Simple, with snapping and instant swap, pre-loading.
1TB 10,000rpm HDD
Azure network for online gaming
$600

Not only would that destroy what we have now but it is also fairly reasonable.

One can dream!!! :)

I'm not sure if you were jk or not, but no PC from the year 2000 could run Oblivion, thats what 5 years behind is.

Ah, no. I wasn't kidding at all. 360/PS3 were light years behind PC when they debuted as far as performance goes. Not even in the same universe.

Sorry, I've just never heard anyone say that before. No console was ever "on par" but 360 was a beast at release.

http://gearnuke.com/a-look-pc-specifications-xbox-ps3-launch-year/

When the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 launched, they were quite ahead of the PC hardware, that was the standard at that time. It is a opposite situation now where both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are using off-the-shelf part for their hardware, mixed with various customizations to the CPU/GPU and RAM, and all packed neatly in a casing.

Not saying the above quote is gospel, but definitely closer to what I've always heard, and the opposite of what you are saying.

Well, I can link a ton of articles stating just the opposite. But there is no need to, when it was clearly a fact. Our 512mb little consoles were just destroyed at launch by gaming rigs.

I'm saying you should link something. 2005 PC vs 360. I challenge you, just one single article is all I require that states the 360 was 5 years behind PCs when it released.

Just a single link. If you can find one I'll ask Ketto or someone to ban me.

There isn't one. The 360's gpu architecture alone was like 6 months to a year ahead of gpus on the pc side. I believe the equiv 360 gpu was apart of the ATI x1800 family or something like that that.

That's correct, X360's GPU was the first with unified shaders, the GPU was ahead of it's time at release.

At least menace caught on :)

lol I asked you if you were joking, were you were also joking about 30gb of gddr5 ram in two years for a console? bc that seems about as ridiculous too... maybe this is just your thread to have some fun ;) or maybe not

Nah, I was serious about the GDDR5. It does sound out of line....but seriously, the way tech is moving at the speed of light, a couple years from now, they could but that much ram in a machine and even take a little bit of a loss. I honestly would not be surprised.

As for GPU's and CPUs......I have seen them in my Alphabet soup...but that is about as much as I know about them. If I were to guess, I would put in a GTXi Radeon Geforce Pro 10000 plus.

CPU: Custom version of the AMD-FX 9590
GPU: Custom version of the R9 M290x + 1-2 GB VR
RAM: 8GB GDDR5
1TB: 7200 RPM HDD
Blu-ray Drive

$499

Well, that'd be awesome if we could do that in a couple years. If tech moves the way you say, you could release a $350 console in a few years and decimate the competition. I don't see it, but we''ll see.

I have no clue...I know ZERO about hardware!

Microsoft
CPU: 8 core desktop cpu w/ integrated graphics for low power tasks(movies, browsing, etc.)
GPU: Going to assume by 2018, the manufacturing process has shrunk from 28nm to 20nm(or smaller?) which means more power per watt...so Whatever is equivalent to the top of the line gpus that release in 2016-2017.
VRAM: 4 gigs of gddr6
System Ram: 12 gigs of ddr4
1 or 2 TB SSD
Blu Ray or HVD drives
$499

full backwards compatible with all games from this gen.

Release 2018

Well DDR4 is coming soon. Maybe this year, if not, most def next year. Perhaps next-gen consoles will be using that instead.

If I were too release a new console, I'd make sure it had full backwards compatibility.

I wouldn't worry too much about the hardware specs and would spend all of my time signing deals with 3rd party developers and indies. That's what attracts people to consoles nowadays, it's all about the games.

I'm going to be more vague, but simply....

- Much more powerful system
- Two models. HDD and no HDD. Higher priced HDD model for people who want to keep it simple. Cheaper no-HDD version where people provide their own HDD
- Discs and downloads
- Discs have disc based DRM. Digital downloads have digital DRM. With discs, you can sell them, but it lacks digital sharing. For digital, you're stuck with it, but you can digitally share (with a reasonable low number of people... I'm not saying share with 100 friends)
- Any kind of PS Eye/Kinect/Tablet is optional add on
- Controller is tried and true Xbox layout
- $400 with no HDD, $500 with HDD
