‘Even the net power requirements for the two consoles are very much alike, which further underscores functional similarity.’

Andrew Rassweiler, senior director at IHS believes that both the PS4 and Xbox one are architecturally similar. IHS is a research firm that specializes in video games console research.

“It’s interesting that AMD has taken over the core central processing unit (CPU) and graphic processing unit (GPU) in both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. This is a very different landscape from the hardware of just a few years ago, when IBM was dominating the core CPU slot in both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles.”

“Both chips are built in 28-nanometer-process geometry, have the same number of CPU cores, and possess similar silicon die surface area between the two, suggesting similar amounts of functionality and processing power. Even the net power requirements for the two consoles are very much alike, which further underscores functional similarity. The two consoles are not clones, but are definitely related, “ Rassweiler said in a press release sent to GamingBolt.

Furthermore, Steve Mather, senior principal analyst at IHS believes that Microsoft will be losing more money over the Xbox One compared to its previous console but this strategy will attract new customers.

“The Xbox One is designed to serve as a beachhead in the home for Microsoft, with the console’s capability to interact with—and interface to—other devices, such as televisions, set-top boxes, smartphones and tablets. Gaining such a strategic advantage in the battle to control the connected home and Internet-enabled living room is well worth having the Xbox One act as a loss leader for Microsoft.”

In our in-depth analysis of the PS4 and Xbox One we concluded that Sony’s next gen console definitely has the lead in performance. You can read our report here. Furthermore, you check out our PlayStation 4 review here and learn more about its various components here.

Our report on Xbox One motherboard components and the review of the console itself will be going live later today.

So we can officially say the X1 and PS4 are cousins from another corporation?

Yes their architectures are very similar. But their GPUs are about the difference between a 7790 and 7870.

I saw a post on social media saying the X1 runs hotter than the PS4 despite the larger casing and external power brick. Is that ignorant mainstream mythology or true?

Eurogamer and other web sites measured similar heat levels, sometimes slightly hotter on the Xbox. Likely reasons might include larger SoC causing more heat, less efficient case design, and the fan not being allowed to run too fast to keep noise levels low.

So basically all the "overheating" hysteria whipped up by misterx, trolls, and "forum posters" was not only bunk, but Xbox's SoC runs as hot or hotter.

It wont the SoC being hotter its likely the fans or the internal PSU contributing to heat. Even though the XB1 SoC is larger its mostly SRAM and SRAM doesn't produce a large amount of heat.

As usual, a bunch of X1 FUD whith hyperbole and false claims.

Depending what is being used, the PS4 can be hotter. Or the X1 is hotter. PS1 draws more power usage across all functions and for noise, PS4 is louder at close distance, while at 1 or 3 metres away the decibels are basically a draw.

Just like your laptop. Mine feels cool right now, but as soon it's pumping graphics from a movie or online video, it warms up quick. I use a chiller so the onboard fans don't have to work much. Fans that run at high speed all the time have a limited life span. That's why that small turbine fan on the PS4 worries me. It looks like a problem just waiting to happen, but I'm probably wrong. Never had a fan stop working on a Sony console.

Reasonable theories as to why Xbox runs as hot or hotter despite having a larger heatsink and fan is "hyperbole and FUD"? You're throwing words you don't understand at the wall hoping they stick.

What claim of mine was "false"? Point it out. Use quotes. Once again you are making childish false accusations with 0 evidence.

I just said exactly that Xbox runs as hot or hotter, despite the FUD (note the correct usage of the term here) by trolls like misterx and others on this forum on PS4 "overheating". Nobody even mentioned noise, the discussion was about heat.

After playing my X1 for hours the other day I put my hand over it/behind it to feel how hot it was and much to my surprise it was actually cold rather than warm.

I don't have a PS4 to compare it to, and I don't care, but I can say with certainty that I have zero concerns about my X1 ever overheating.

Which is good. I do have a twisted side that kind of thinks it would be funny if the consoles did start overheating and the indicator was that the white light would flash repeatedly so that someone would come up with the new RROD as: White Orb Repeater of Death, and we'd be spammed with links to video of Cameo's Word up, and humorous gif mashups with that and Kameo.

YOU DONT SAY THAT!!.....YOU DON'T SAY THAT!!!
