Justice League

Justice League was shot with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio instead of with the more popular 2.39:1 one. So it will look kind of similar to those Martha scenes in BvS which were shot with IMAX cameras. 1.85:1 is only slightly wider than the TV screen's aspect ratio which is 16:9 or 1.77:1. It should fill up the entire screen in your theater. No black bars, no motorized screen masking needed.

Zack Snyder explains why Justice League’s aspect ratio is different than previous movies

You may have noticed from the Justice League trailers ...that it has a larger aspect ratio than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or most big blockbuster movies. Normally they are shot at 2.39:1, resulting in big black bars on the top and bottom when you watch at home on your 16:9 HDTV. But Justice League was shot with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio that fills up much more of the frame. There will still be black bars when you watch the Blu-ray, but they’ll be so small you may not even notice them. So why the switch?

It all comes down to Zack Snyder’s love for IMAX when shooting Batman v Superman. A native IMAX image has a squarish aspect ratio and uses a lot of the frame. “I had so much fun shooting the IMAX sections of my movie (BvS),” Snyder said to a fan on Vero. “Sort of fell in love with that giant, less rectangular aspect ratio and so that’s why I shot JL 1:85.”

Despite falling in love with IMAX during Batman v Superman, none of Justice League was shot in that format. But the larger aspect ratio certainly makes up for it. For comparison, I’ve added some screenshots from Batman v Superman and Justice League below to give you a better idea of the difference in aspect ratios.

WB and Funko should really develop computer animated movies in this chibi style.

Black bars should be gone by now.

...I think "larger than life" screens in the theater used to mean going incredibly wide. This was done with shooting with anamorphic, or in some rare cases like early Cinerama, 3 cameras... but later started using a single 70mm camera.

Snyder actually has a great point, with big now meaning tall, ala IMAX.

I do agree with the fact that so much is shot digital and displayed on digital. I do dislike wasted resources... but having a Samsung Galaxy 8+ has kind of changed my mind on this. Seeing movies instantly go to a wider native screen looks quite stunning. I can only imagine a larger Ultra Wide OLED! Better yet, I'm pretty certain that I will one day, get a panamorph lens for an ultra-wide projector screen, and do a constant height projection. No more bars on top and bottom... ever! I just need a house with a basement first. No big deal.

LOL. This thread is turning into my personal blog. Where are the JL fans in here?

Final trailer will drop tomorrow at 6:00 am PT. CGI is complete and will look alot different than that have been shown in the last 3 trailers. Cyborg's CGI has been drastically improved.
