Kotaku: Next Assassin's Creed To Be Announced Next Week; Now Called Syndicate

Blech. I was excited for Unity, but after this mornings presentation, I have zero interest in this new one right now.
They had this whole video about learning lessons and innovating, and when they show the gameplay footage.... great big, MEH. It looks pretty standard. You can fist fight (which you could already do in previous games), and you can drive buggies. Oh yeah, you get Batman's grappling hook. Everything else was the same. Even the animation. I was hoping we could get some kind of physically based animation for a change, as it's getting lame watching the characters snap into place for the animation sequence to pan out.

I'm just left with an empty feeling. It doesn't help that you aren't really being much of a good guy. Yeah, let's get into some organized crime syndicates! FOR FREEDOM AND THE PEOPLE. lol. I do like the kinda Gangs of New York type feel, though.

Disappointing.

What's worse is that from looking at the vid, some aspects have remained stubbornly unevolved. Guards are still just bots walking left to right waiting for you to drop on them. They don't fall asleep or complain. Hell, the guards in the old Tenchu games fell asleep sometimes...

I don't play the games, by the time Black Flag came out, I finally played one of the games, AC2. That said, I'm really impressed by this games visuals and the layout of the game world. Unity just looked cluttered and not as friendly towards exploration, maybe due to the theme of the game, but this seems like a much better improvement. Going by video alone, it seems like they've gone back to having a more parkour centric game, but again, I don't really play these things. I just see some vids.

Yeah, I think you're in a much better position to appreciate the game then some of the more diehard assassins creed fans. I watch that video and I think while it's mostly well done and there's nothing really wrong with the graphics or gameplay, it's just slight variations on stuff I've done hundreds and hundreds of times in the other games. Oh, but now with hand to hand combat. :/

Black flag at least had the tropical setting, the pirate theme, and the ship combat to make the gameplay feel a lot more fresh.

Announcement seems to be garnering a chorus of meh's from around the world. Will be interesting to see how Ubisoft reacts.

I'm gonna channel MW and say "meh"

These games are always a slog, I barely finished 3, 4, and never got around to playing unity much. I never even buy them either, someone else just brings it in, and unity was bundled.
I loved the series until 3, they just pack way too much meaningless crap in the game, collect this, collect that, use eagle vision to see this, CATCH THE FRENCH THIEF WHO SOUNDS BRITISH OI M8 FOOKIN DEK U 1 IN THE GABBER SWARE ON ME MUM

should have had the protagonist be jack the ripper. missed opportunity, just seems like another boring constantly angry/sarcastic dude.

Not interested, if that wasn't obvious.

That was likely to happen no matter what was shown. I'm hopeful that this game will correct the issues from the past title, at least they aren't trying to focus on forcing MP into this game. I do want to point out that both Revelations and Unity both had the same director, maybe Ubisoft needs to let that guy go.

I bet you if they had announced Black Flag 2 people would've liked it. They can perfectly make another game set in the mid 1500s during the First Golden Age of Piracy (Black Flag took place during the Third).

Watching the vid more objectively and not thinking about how I've seen this gameplay 7 times before, it does look like it could be one of the better AC games. The combat looks off though. It's no longer a back and forth, it's just you doing combo after combo while the enemy stands there.

It's pre-alpha. There were a lot of noticeable problems. Not that we should expect such advance animations from them give that they are already pushing "crowds of 5,000" on these massively underpowered CPUs of consoles. I think Ubisoft deserves somewhat of a break.

I used similar arguments for Unity, and I agree that it's pre-alpha, but I can only go by what they show. Does this game really need crowds that large, I wonder?

It made sense in Unity, given the environment, but this one doesn't seem to warrant crowds like that. At least not on a constant basis. My main issue is that it looks like the tactics I've used over and over don't seem to be changed. It just looks to all play out like deja vu.

Still, that doesn't mean the game won't be quality, just that I'm getting burnt out.

Ya know, they push the social/sneaky stealth angle all the time, but that's been hard to stomach for awhile since it never actually seems to work. Either sneaking around behind stuff is poorly implemented and it's easy to get caught, or the crowd blending is so stupidly simplified it's boring. Hide in a group of 5 - invisible to all. 800 feet high well out of anyones peripheral vision - RAISE THE ALARM YE FOOKIN CNTS REK HIM M8

I am just so salty about assassins creed
