comparing an entire life cycle of 8 years to launch titles doesnt really seem like a fair comparison. Besides, dead rising 3 couldnt be done on last gen, and its the first zombie game to truly feel like a zombie game with soo many on screen. Forza 5, with the amazing graphics and rumble triggers makes racing feel more realistic, and driveatars are so much better than regular AI that never mess up. Kinect rivals is the best motion type of gaming ive experienced and the xbox dashboard blending with your entertainment system is icing on the cake. NBA and Ryse although not doing anything differently gameplay wise, immerse me more than ever with their cutting edge graphics.
There is a lot to be happy about and look forward to, perhaps you are expecting too much or just not into gaming as much anymore? BF4 kills every battlefield experience on any console before it, so in terms of gameplay, 64 player with 60fps is a huge advancement in gameplay experience.
Dead Rising 3 is one of the few games I think is made for next-gen consoles wich probably could be done last generation, without much of a graphical downgrade.
If you look at a PS3 launch-window title like Heavenly Swords and the final battle there, that's huge amount of people there are basically just as impressive, and it's the same resolution and 4xAA. So graphically there wouldn't be much of a different, less varioation on enemies, you'd get areas and zones, and loadtimes between them, due to Xbox One having much more memory available, and able to stream from disk much faster.
And probably abit more detailed model, but Heavenly Sword looked pretty good.
The trouble with making games with large amounts of foes, like a horde, isn't just getting enough enemies onscreen, it is that the hordes can't be difficult to defeat, because if they are - so that most player wouldn't be overrun - and balancing this. :-/
I think that the main reason why you don't see many zombie-hordes in most zombie-games, is due to the fact that games usually tries to deliver some sort of scare or challenge, hence the lack of non-scary zombie-hordes, wich dosn't usually pose much of a challenge.
I don't know if Dead Rising adresses this tough as I havn't played it, but the small stuff I've seen from GiantBomb's Quicklook, where he were plenty hours in, and hadn't died more than once or twice he said - makes me think that it seems that it's more about making the player feel invincible and awesome, rather than challenging the player. :-/
