Also in my mind, they're like companion movies. I like to imagine that Mad Max is like the Cursed Earth world that exists in the lawless wasteland outside the Megacities.

Exactly! These movies do not need complex plots. They need plots appropriate it to the setting. Dredd was SOOOO good. Karl Urban was born to play that part!
