Marty O'Donnell Fired by Bungie

Well of course that is going to be subjective, so if you think he's top tier I obvously can't argue that. I don't think most of his music was my favorite in a game, just a few tracks for sure though.

You dont have to love his music but its ridiculous to suggest thats his popularity is simply because the games are good.

The games are good and also extremely popular, so a lot of people are familiar with his work. That's not to say his work isn't excellent, but exposure certainly helps as well.

Yes, just like the music is fantastic in Remember me, but who knows of that music? Just as good in some ways as Halo's music, in some ways worse, some ways actually better. Exposure helps a lot, and it will also be something that sticks with you because you hear it so often, that is another idea of exposure. We can like some things from hearing it often, I know I have heard the Halo music 10's of thousands of times because I play it so much. People don't often understand my ideas clearly perhaps, they take it wrong all too often, but that's partly my fault, I am a little lazy to explain too much.

I'm not saying his music is bad at all, but if the game was "aliens" for example, his music would be a ton less popular and this thread would be dead. Even if the music was the exact same for example.

Do you know the composer for every popular game though?

Knowing every composer isn't the same thing. My point was that even most popular games don't get this kind of attention for their soundtrack Outside of maybe Marty and Nobuo Uematsu how many could even your average hardcore gamer even name? And there are plenty of other super popular games.

lol, I think my original point still stands very clearly, it isn't to be made into a big deal though and to answer your previous question, a obvious no. I don't know every composer but I do know a lot of music and games. I think your kidding me though about names and music. Of course people know marty cause his name got thrown out there a lot. He also got a lot of exposure because of halo, but other people still know a lot of composers you didn't even tuoch on the ones that are actually more popular such as Nintendo composers for example. I don't want to turn this topic into this though... but

There are plenty of quite popular game composers that a lot of people would know

I know you know him, i know his name is popular but it doesn't make his music better. It doesn't make arnold the governator a good actor just cause he's popular.. it's fine doesn't matter. We know that hsi music is subjective, I know that too. I'm trying to agree with half your idea atleast.

I know you may not know who galway is and what not, but youtube galway and his stuff. Pretty fantastic. galway remixed is remixed work that is good stuff.

Some of marty's stuff is fantastic, that was never to take away from that actually at all.

Arnold isn't a good actor? Now you are blowing my mind.

your blowing my mind, who would consider him a good actor. he can't even speak the language he is acting in. I would never imagine anyone can say he's a good actor lol.... wow. I know it's somewhat subjective but.... We will just do this

th

Hell, even my uncel would refuse to watch a movie with him in it for that very reason.. I do like his movies though personally .

I dont respect the opinion of anyone that doesn't think jingle all the way is high art

Dude, your coming out of left and right field, your leaving the ideas we are talking about. What does bad acting have to do with a good or bad movie.... I own jingle all the way by the way. he is a bad actor, I like the movie but I think sin bad makes this one more than arnold though.

Now, talk your way out of this one.

I get it mr, I know you are trolling me, ha, arnold being a good actor. Good try little buddy.

Ah such a shame.
So old Bungie is pretty much gone now in total.
Halo:CE was certainly far more epic because of the music, as were the rest of the Halos.

I can't say I noticed the music much in the Halo games other than the first one.

Sad news. Marty WAS Bungie, and he defined their games aurally from the beginning. He created consistently good, sometimes Iconic and memorable music in game after game.

I always feel the sound, and more specifically the music in a game to be waay underrated in it's ability to impact a game and how it's received. He really had quite a range in his composing as well. Bungie lost an Icon.

I just hope it's not an indicator of something larger going on, and it doesn't adversely affect Destiny- I mean, Marty was a huge part of Bungie, and their identity up to this point.

Well wishes to Marty in the future.

According to rumors, which are exactly that, he was asking for more money, the board already considered him "overpaid," there was a lot of tension, he was let go.

Sounds logical, as an independent studio, Bungie has to be very cash flow conscious, and although Marty is very talented, they could possibly have another talented individual lined up who is looking for a lot less money.

If Marty was refusing to take a pay cut or becoming disgruntled and making a big deal about not getting a raise, it would make sense that they fired him before he became a cancer to the studio.

Acoustic sensibility, admittedly, tends to be less common than a visual one, but if you have one, you can't help but paying attention to someone like Marty. He has been famous even before Halo.

It seems like the industry is fighting from the ego of creators rather than publishers these days. Recent happenings at Naughty Dog also resulted in the clash of egos if the rumor is right, it is quite strange this is happening all at the same time.

Halo 4's score destroys the previous ones... I love halo but good music is what we are talking about...

I think nostalgia makes some believe Martys music was more epic than it was.. Halo 4 had far more varied tracks like Spartan 117 or Blue and Green. Fantastic tracks... And there are plenty more.

Nah, its not nostalgia for me. I prefer Marty's music in the Halo series, while the soundtrack in H4 was good, I like Marty's scores better, I like the mix of strings and electronic in his soundtracks.

I miss the halo 1 bouncy bass stuff. Like this

Like we're in the 80's or something.
