I'm not as excited for this than I was for Quest 2, but they are going to have to show off some of the unique features, first. I guess the biggest new feature is the high quality color passthrough feature, for AR experiences. So far, I have not seen any compelling use-cases or games, but I'm sure it's nice to have.

I will say that, the controller looks to be a generational leap in design, as well. No more tracking ring is something that goes 180⁰ from PSVR2'S enclosed hand tracking. Really wondering how this technology works, as they did this with the Quest Pro controllers, but that set is $300 for just controllers, and they have cameras and chips built into them. Guessing this one uses the new depth sensor on the headset or something like that. Meta keeps eroding away some of the friction that people have getting into VR, which is important... Side-note, that this new controller sounds to have improved tactile rumble, similar to the Switch Joy-cons, but NOT like PS5/PSVR2 haptic feedback triggers. Bummer on triggers, but new improved rumble sensitivity is still very welcome.

I think that we also need to see some of the games that actually take advantage of the new XR2 gen2 chipset, and its 2x more power. I have heard that Meta has purposefully omitted the Quest 3 launch exclusives from yesterday's game showcase. This might explain why GTA:SA was a no-show.

Lastly, I have to mention that the new pancake lenses are very next-gen for VR, and even PSVR2 doesn't have it, although this does still have LCD, not OLED, like PSVR2. The advantages of pancake lenses (or folded optics) are compact size and visual clarity. The only downside is that they do not allow as much light to get through, so you do need a brighter display. The Apple headset that will be announced next week is all but guaranteed to have pancake lenses, as well as a bright 4K micro-OLED per eye! I wish that the Quest 3 had that kind of display, but it would probably nearly double the price, honestly. Baby-steps, for the <$500 market!

People are super nervous about the controller tracking without the ring, and without the cameras built into the Pros... However, it actually has a hybrid approach of IR LED and AI hand tracking at the same time. WILD!

This is the best review that I've seen so far. I'm now a lot more excited for the Quest3, so I've already ordered one. Originally I ordered the 128GB headset, but then I decided upon canceling, and going with the 512GB for $150 more. I just don't want to be stuck wishing after that I didn't have to keep deleting games. It's shipped today, but I'm out in the CO mountains, and they are saying it should be here on Thursday. (kind of wishing i'd have just gone through Amazon instead of BB, but maybe it'll show up on Wednesday, after all)

Is it shipping to your home or to bestbuy, they’ll hold it for almost a week for you, and you can extend the wait period via the app, maybe you can call in to do so as well

It's shipping to my home. The nearest Best Buy is a couple hrs drive, unfortunately. Of course, I was in Denver at this time last week... I guess I do have Tuesday and Wednesday off. I probably should have thought of driving tomorrow. Typically, consoles & stuff would ship prior to release date. I've always received my launch HW the day of or earlier, so I didn't think about it not being shipped until last minute. 🙃

My Quest 3 Review-

I just want to say that after playing the Quest 3 for the past couple of weeks, I can say without hesitation, that this is one of the best gaming devices I own, right now.

Is it perfect? No. There are things that are "just good enough" like the battery life and the passthrough cameras. However, it's easily a 100% generational leap over Quest 2 in features and graphics, and they managed to do that in only 2 years, somehow.

Another thing that they have fallen short on, are the release games. We're getting several big titles in November/December, like Asgards Wrath II, Ghostbusters, Assassin's Creed Nexus, as well as Gamepass and Upper-body tracking, so it's only going to get better! We did just get remakes of Samba de Amigo and 7th Guest, and both are SOLID remakes!

Yeah, so what DID work for me, is that not unlike Xbox, Meta did have several graphical updates to already owned games, that are worth mentioning. Red Matter 2... HOLY SH!T, this game shouldn't even be possible. It already looked better than it should on Quest 2, but it looks more like a PC or maybe a PSVR2 game now. I'll have to see if there's a YouTube comparison. Golf+ was always a great game, but now they changed the aesthetic to more realistic colors, to match the added grass and trees that are now capable with over 2x the processing power. Then there's the Mixed Reality feature, which has trickled its way intro a whole slew of games, like a game mode in Samba de Amigo, and existing games, like Synth Riders, Eleven Table Tennis, & Puzzling Places. Yes, the passthrough camera resolution could stand to be better, and MR absolutely needs a well-lit room!

Best of all, the brand new lenses are just SO MUCH more comfortable on my eyes! I just want to be in the headset WAY MORE often! Unfortunately, Fresnel lenses, like every Quest before and PSVR2, just wear out my eyes, with the textured concentric rings. Aside, I really liked the spherical lenses of the PSVR, even if the colors bled, and there was some geometric warping... but these new pancake lenses in the Quest 3 are F-ing AMAZING! They are the thing that I didn't know that I wanted the most, in VR. I never want to go back to Fresnel lenses, ever! I was going to get a PSVR2 soon, and I want to experience the HDR, but I think I'll wait for a revision, hopefully with pancake lenses. I'm not sure why they decided to go with high tech everything else, when those lenses were just coming out.

Not much to say about the controllers, but they are so much smaller, but have Nintendo Switch-like textured rumble feedback. They are also more precise than before.

I should also mention that the built-in speakers are much upgraded over the Quest 2, and sound pretty great, and sound is even more localized. They should more headphone-like, to me.

Anyway, I hope that some of you are interested in Quest 3. The full product gets a solid 9 out of 10, for me. With the rate that Meta releases critical quality updates, this headset is absolutely somehow going to get better! It's $200 more expensive than the Quest 2 at launch, but there's just a lot added features to make the price worth it, for me.

Note: I had a HW issue with my Quest 3 originally, that I was going to go into, but I was able to resolve that HW issue, and it hasn't changed my overall opinion of the device, but I am slightly concerned about these devices potentially overheating.
